New Week!
Hey! This thread is a week old. Woo! I'm glad that it's lasted this long because now we're past what I already know. I'll keep doing the quizzes for Hiragana and then move on to Katakana. So there are now two quizzes, Hiragana/Katakana and Sentences/Vocab. This will start tomorrow.

Thanks for the support, if so many people hadn't called this thread awesome, it would have died for sure.

Maybe you should include a example of how each is used and their write order before a quiz :O
ex:
た(ta), かた[kata](肩)Shoulder.

Might be too much work, though. (ノ_<。)

I'd suggest buying books, So you can study them whenever.
But then... the book I use is in Chinese, so I can't really say the same for English ones.
Since I heard that translating Japanese to English without restructuring the whole thing and changing somethings a-bit and have it make sense for everyone is a pain in the arse.

Sentence Basics
A is B. The cat is brown. My car is broken. This is banana bread. The simplest sentence that can be formed that isn't a fractured sentence. In English, we have The, A, An, It, and several other words used to confuse non-English speakers. In Japan, they have DeSu. Most Japanese and Japanese books say DeSu as Dess though. Take all of our An, A, The and whatever and forget 'em. This isn't French with Mr. Mop and Mrs. Teapot. This isn't German with two quarters before 3pm. This is as Japanese and in Japanese, A is B is translated at A Wa B DeSu.

In other words A Wa B DeSu = A is B

The cat is brown. Cat Wa brown DeSu. NeKo Wa ChaIRo DeSu. ねこ　は　ちゃいろ　です。　猫　は　茶色　です。

Notice that Wa (わ) uses the Ha (は) character instead of itself. I have no idea why. But it's way easier than figuring out An and A and The. These are words we don't even have definitions of. This is also why KonNiChiWa is spelled こんにちは. You see, KonNiChiWa is just the first half of a sentence that became a greeting. Sort of like "How do you do?" or "Good Day." When literally those sentences to make sense.

So lemme break down the A Wa B DeSu

A is the subject. は denotes that A is the subject. This way you can have a large sentence then just put は after it to show that is the subject. "The girl who's mother owns the convenience store on 5th really likes you." B is the second noun. ***I HAVE ERASED MOST GRAMMAR TERMS FROM MY MIND***. Finally DeSu is the verb. Just like how 'is' is the connecting verb in English.

The easiest way to practice this is to just take English and plug it into the Japanese sentence. I Wa male DeSu. Dog Wa dumb DeSu. Traffic Wa slow DeSu. As you expand your vocab, put the actual Japanese where it goes.

This is bare bones shit and I am obviously not the best teacher. If you have trouble with this, please post!

Tomorrow I'll post the basic sentence quiz and introduce how to yell, make a sentence a question, and link nouns to other words. (Like "The brown Cat is happy.") Have a great day :D

Bah.. I'm too busy learning Spanish to be bothered with Japanese... I doubt there's a lot of people from Japan who live in Oklahoma..
That's the one in the center of the U.S. by the way..

I was amazed to find out that Boise, Idaho has a large amount of Japanese living there. If you dig deep enough, you'd be surprised.

Well shit...looks like I'm going to have to put everything in a spoiler so you can't cheat on the test...

To make a noun possessive, use の (no). So "My cat" would be "わたし　の　ねこ". To clarify a bit on the order, always put the subject after の. So to say "My cat is brown." it would be "わたし　の　ねこ　は　かひろ　です。" So notice that NeKo is before the particle (Wa) because it is the subject. Now how about saying you have black hair? "わたし　は　くろ　の　かみのけ　です。"

Simple, eh?

Now lets ask what color your cat is! IRo is Japanese for color so... "ねこ　は　いろ　です　か？". Cat, color? is the how I would literally translate this. か (Ka) is like a question mark in English.

So how would you answer? "ちゃいろ　です　よ！". よ (Yo) is like an exclamation point. But it doesn't mean anger or yelling like in English. よ just means that you implore it is the truth. That it is certain.

Its really quiet now...lots of people said they bookmarked. So how is it going? Am I going too fast? Too slow? Do you understand my explanations? Or is there not enough time to learn another language?

I've been wanting to learn Japanese for some time, but because there wasn't any school to learn it nearby I never got around to doing so.
But now I'll try to finally learn something, I'm memorizing Hiragana. So thank you for doing this, and keep it up! :)

Note that Wo を is actually pronounced O お and the W is silent. This is because it isn't used in any words but rather as a particle (like Wa は).

This concludes Hiragana, next up is Katakana
