Wow, I'm the first person mentioning Starship Troopers? Love the book and the movie but literally the similarities end with

1) There is a character from Earth called Johnny (in the book his name was Juanitto) and a couple of the other characters had the same names as well.
2) You have to serve in the military to become a citizen.
3) There is a war with a race called Bugs (in the book they were an industrial race more like humans).

Yeah, plus the title that's pretty much it. My personal favorite difference though is the character 'Dizzy' Gilespy(sp?). In the movie the character was a hot redhead that ends up being a romantic interest for Johnny. In the book...a guy who dies on the first page.
Ahem. First to mention?

Probably The Secret of NIMH, at least, when compared to the ORIGINAL FRIKING BOOK, called Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
YES! Not because you are right (other adaptation of things have less to do with the original source material) but because you have HEARD of this. I could hug you

Agreed, honestly the adaptation was reasonably close so far as such things go (yes they changed the character's name, oh well), but that was one of my favorite books when I was a kid.

Wanted, the original comic plot wasn't about a league of assassins, but about supervillains taking over the world.

Thank you Wikipedia

Wanted.

I read the comic, it's nothing like the movie at all.

And the comic's actually really good.
That's good to hear, I watched a bit of the movie then just gave up because I didn't like it at all. I will have to check out the comic now.

Dragonball Evolution, it has nothing to do with Dragonball other than Dragon Balls and character names. Do I win?
Actually I don't think it's supposed to be a literal adaption of the movie. Much in the same way that the now classic The Lost Empire (also known as Monkey King) is not a literal adaption of the Journey To The West tale. Even their style of filming are alike, so that movie might actually have been an inspiration for Dragonball Evolution.

Harry Potter and the Prisioner of Azkaban. They got that movie all backwards, not to mention mixing up places, removing HUGE parts of the plot...

Nightwatch and Daywatch. Not bad movies by any stretch of the imagination, but they didn't have a whole lot to do with the novels.

But this raise a question what if a film is a good adaption and still sucks? I watched Punisher : Warzone and was found it a good portrayal of Frank Castle and his ideals, with the ridiculous violence of the comics. But I didn't enjoy the movie at all.

Blade Runner.

All of these other things at least have the name in common.

Blade Runner takes it's name from a completely different story.

Starship Troopers.
It has nothing to do with Robert A. Heinlein's novel which was a story of moral responsibility and dedication told through a story about war with giant insects. It had heavy referances to facism and power control and dominance and while the movie did do some of those things it failed to deliver the same feel, drifting a very long distance from the source material.

I'm going to go with The Crow, because people have already said most of the other good ones.

The graphic novel was way more violent, the characters were different, the overal feeling in the book was a lot different ...hell, everything except the fact the guy and his girlfriend died was different.

Harry Potter.

Given that I'm going through them in order and have reached the 3rd, that's the one currently making me want to claw my eyes out in hatred, but I kno for a certain fact 4 will be worse, and 5 may actually make me physically sick.
Film 4 was EASILY the worst movie. 5+6 aren't too bad, but 4 is just skullfuckingly bad.

Eragon. Personal biggest dissapointment of '06
As much as I'd hate to say, Eragon is the worst adaptation ever. There is no chance in hell that a sequel for this movie would be made, story wise alone, as they royally screwed over the plot of the first book, destroying 90% of the plot in the next books.
