Mine is from Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven.
i had to sneak around a giant cemetery, and fight zombies. here's the catch, they can only be cut down by one sword, and said sword depletes your health by simply being in your inventory! on top of that, i had to avoid traps such as guillotines, and hands coming out of the ground at random (all of which can result in instant death). aggravating tedium. just aggravating teduim.
I FRIGGEN HATED THAT LEVEL!

water indeed lends a hateful hand to games. But I have to say that fire emblem also scares me. I can't let my people die, every level is just a test of patience whenever that goddamn random enemy pops out of nowhere and critical hits your ass. I despise levels that involve a totally inane thing. Where the logical solution to something just doesn't work. And that happens way too often. Or fetch quests.
agreed. Ok now its time for me to think of something... everygoddamn stealth level in call of cthulhu dark corners of the earth. That game would have been a stable shooter if not for that half hearted attempt at stealth!

Seriously how could I forget about the water temple from Zelda OoT! That level almost made me give up the greatest game of all time.

To be fair, it's only because I'm an RP nerd.
As can be seen be the lack of the "post in 1000 threads" badge. But I am not one to talk.

That level is a *****. i know the level (and game) inside out but i really dont like the water temple. in the master quest version the cut out half the temple and, for me, it made it a bit easier.

Am I really the only person in the world who likes the water temple in OoT???
Cool... We need an achievement for that.

Anyway.

Original Halo, The level where you have to shut down the pulse generators (always takes me 5 tries to get the last banshee).
The flying chapter in PREY (bad design).
The Constuction Yard in Darwinia (takes bloody ages).
Turtle Rock temple in LoZ:ALTTP (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH!!!).

Once upon a time I played a game called Wizardry for the PS2 and I only got to the fourth dungeon before getting stuck, I looked it up on the internet and it told me "har har har, the game has no ending and the last level goes on forever".

So I went down to game stop and sold it back :C

I always hated being on the Citadel (1st time) in Mass Effect to do missions.
Elevator rides are horribly long.

really? no ending? at least with games like tetris you know that going in, but that's just a big c0cks1ap to have an infinite dungeon.

Oh, I dunno, I thought the Water Temple in LoZ:OoT was okay... But what hate are sewer levels in any non-2D game (I don't know why, actually...).

That starting temple you have to keep going back to in Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Rest of the game was fine. That ruined it for me.

maybe because they're dark, and trigger olfactory memories of mold and poop?

Gotta be the Water Temple, mostly because I was 8 and because I thought I had used a key on the wrong door and thought that maybe they messed up in the game and didn't give me enough keys to continue if I used it on the wrong door =/ I didn't restart thankfully but that temple had me stuck for at least 2 days.

Simple tip: Assuming you still have the ghost, quickly drive to the very back of the canyon right down the middle of the map between the warring flood and covenent with guns blazing. There are two rocks at the back of the canyon. Drive the ghost behind them so you are between the rocks and the canyon wall. Then, wait... a camoflaged elite will try to take you out, but he shouldn't be to hard to deal with. After a few minutes enough of the flood and covenent have taken each other out and you can run out and grab the banshee and use it to wipe out the rest of the enemies.

Oh man. I HATED the graveyard level! And those stupid hands that pop up out of the ground instantly give away your position, making it almost impossible to get Grand Master. You had to keep that stupid health-depleting sword sheathed until it was time to run up and stealth-kill someone.

And those floating heads; it was hard to tell which way they were facing sometimes. And at the end of it you had a difficult boss fight. I about threw the controller when I got killed because I knew I had to repeat the entire level. I played that level once and never visited it again; I didn't care that I never scored perfect on it.

Live Twice for Tomorrow - Final Scene - Stuntman.

I only missed the final explosion when I finished it. I was going too fast and drove past it too soon.

I'm not doing that level again. EVER.

Anything with "leaps of faith" (which means half of the original "Sonic the Hedgehog"). If I go into retro gaming mode, I'd have to include Shinobi 3's factory level, the entire Taz Mania game, Jungle Strike's stealth bomber level (at times it seems to move faster than the screen does), and I'm sure I can come up with others. Oh, and DeeJay on "Super Street Fighter 2". He might not have been the hardest enemy, but he sure as hell was the most annoying.

More recently, the temptress mission in Oblivion, because you can't get out of the farmhouse without basically committing murder. It's soooo stupid - these women are essentially trapped in their own house and none of them has a key to open the door!

All of Act 3 in MGS4 - I haven't played anything THAT slow.
The research laboratory mazes in Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams - I need a GameFAQs article up or I get lost for good.

On legendary, it's a bit trickier than that. The covenant effortlessly wipe out the flood, and then there's a gold elite left among other things which is damn near unkillable, plus the wraiths etc.

But as for my personal most hated levels:
- another one here who had no clue what I was doing on the water temple :p
- that level in halo 1 where you first encounter the flood. Honestly, do people not learn from horror movies? "Yeah, a military team vanished in this area, let's go down into the dark underground base surrounded by a swamp. What's the worst that could happen?!"
... ok, more truthfully because it gave me a nasty shock first time round.
- I reserve a special place in my book-of-stuff-to-murder-the-game-designers-for for escort missions, especially that one in CoD4 carrying your teammate across half the bloody city >_>
