Who, in your opinion, was your least favorite person to play as in a video game?
Jeez, who do you think my be the worst protagonist in a game?

I'm tempted to say Joel from Last of Us, just because
of the disgusting ending to the game, what with the lies and selfishness (good ending, hated that it happened)

But I think that my least favorite character I've played in a game would be any character in the original Medal of Honor and Call of Duty games (Before Pacific Assault and Modern Warfare, respectively)
I'm also tempted to say Rochelle from L4D2.

But let's keep this interesting: a player you have played as, not any game character.

Probably Kratos, especially in God of War 3. Completely despicable character with stupid motivation who is basically a teenage boy in a powerful body. URGH!

Jason Brody in Far Cry 3 got close to becoming comically naive at points. No matter which ending I chose, I felt like he was more than a bit of a prat.

Good game though; at least he was silent for the guerrilla warfare, open world-y bits.

Kratos

In God of War 2 and 3 it's impossible for me to imagine I'm playing as anything other than the villian, he's just such an unrepentant arsehole and psychopath there were actually times I was tempted to stop playing altogether because I was ashamed at the things I was forced to make him do to progress.

It's even worse when the game seems to expect me to still feel sorry for him because of his tragic backstory.

Player character from Saints Row 3.

He was a fucking flippant pyschopath in 2. Sometimes he was silly and chill, other times he'd kidnap your girlfriend and trick you into running her over with monster truck.

Then 2 comes and he's no longer a pyschopath. Johnny Gat was right, they changed man. Boss got soft.

He totally is a villain. The only thing that makes him a hero is that the people he's fighting are bigger dicks than he is.

And that's just why I love him. He's filled with rage and so much sadness, his entire existence is empty. He's like D-Fens in the movie Falling Down, he lashes out at the universe and it's Gods, but he never gets an catharsis. Theres no give, he's the perfect greek tragedy.

Eh, I say he's more of an anti-hero than an actual villain.

OT: Though FF XII is my favorite Final Fantasy game I do not like Vaan. I wish they would have just gone with their original plan and made Basch the main character...

If second place were to be rewarded than Jimmy from Ape Escape 2 sweeps that award hands down. Jimmy is an idiot who basically sent all the Pipo monkeys Monkey Helmets instead of pants. How does one confuse pants for one of these!

Luis from Ballad of gay tony was pretty bad. A thoughaly unlikable guy, also said " bro" too much. Just a pet peeve of mine :p

Or maybe markus fenix, can be nothing but mad. Even when he's supposed to be sad he's angry!

Still really enjoyed both games, just not for the protagonists thats for sure.

Gordon Freeman's inability to express any semblance of emotion or empathy during important moments did chafe me a bit.

But from what I've played of later God of War games, I really hated Kratos. Just a one-note unsympathetic slaughter-fest from the guy.

I hate silent protagonists of all kinds in a story where he is an established character. I'll take "WHERE'S MY WIFE" Dom over Chrono from CT. It's why I really hate someone like Link from Legend of Zelda, I felt no investment in his need to do anything. Honestly I prefered all the Links in the manga's cause at least then we know who Link is, and his investments.

The protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei: Noctrune. If you survived the end of the world and thought you were one of the last remaining humans (even if you are a demi-human) and you ran across anyone much less an old school friend, I would think the conversation would be a bit more then... "Oh hey, how you been?" "Yea some crazy shit going on around these parts, see you later."

Batman from the Arkham games.

Miserable, joyless, humorless git with no personality whatsoever.

Tidus from FFX, Everything about that douchenozzle, from his clothes to his voice to the stupid sport he played to his emo daddy issues horseshit. I actually would use Auron to kill his ass occasionally, just for laughs and initially, to see if I had him stabbed if he'd shut the hell up in cutscenes.

I once tried playing Final Fantasy 8. Even if the gameplay and story hadn't been complete rubbish, I'd still have hated it just for the protagonist alone. What an unlikable useless twit! Never did beat the game as I stopped playing the game somewhere around the third disk, mostly because of my frustration on finding out the protagonist was still impossibly alive.

By contrast Kratos is an evil asshole but at least he's entertaining to watch, so there's that.

Yeah. Vaan was just another one of those ascended(read: completely unnecessary to the plot) side characters getting too much screen time like Tidus from FFX or Shia Labouf in Transformers. The story should've starred Basch or at least my preference, Balthier, 'cuz he's the Leading Man'. The story could've skipped from Ashe's fall from royalty straight to the scene where Balthier and Fran break into the castle and the plot would not have suffered one bit.

FUCK!

HOW DID YOU KNOW?!

I was really looking forward to bitching about the Persona 3 protagonist...

But srsly tho, Minato would have been fine if his character had developed even slightly out of the antisocial loner archetype. Nope, full Dickhead Mode forever. What even is a game revolving around magical friendship powers?

You know what really gets me though, the fact that whenever something important happens I.E a party member gets a new Persona by serious character development, it will cut to your main character standing around in his room having nothing to do with it.

The only time I even remotely liked him was was during the Hermit Social Link because holy shit he actually EMOTES. GGWP SON!

Oh and the mean joke you can play on Yukari when they sneak into the school at night. That was genuinely funny

"What does it say on that key?"

"Morgue"

Corvo from Dishonored. I'm fine with silent protagonists or semi-silent protagonists (in like Halo, Resistance 3 etc.), or even in RPGs like Oblivion were you're silent but have dialogue options... but Corvo, urgh, no.

I hated how all the characters respond to him in different ways trying to show different personalities and what not to him, especially since his response is both up to you and silent. It's soiled even further with the morale choice, as for example when you last meet Granny Rags and choose the evil option, you can always back out of it but if you choose the nice option once it ruins the characters interaction with Corvo who can't call backsies.

And the thing is, they could've very well made this work if they simply outright turned him into the villain. I mean, he's basically already fucking up the world and everyone in it. But then the game tries to turn him into this tragic character who releases...*ugh* hope into the world, and Zeus is the real bad guy...

Worst part is the scene where he uses a poor slave girl as a doorstop, who gets brutally crushed to death as a result, which is immediately followed by Kratos being all worried about Pandora. Yeah, my heart bleeds for you, Kratos, you fucking asshole.

OT: Probably the Prince from Warrior Within. Totally screwed up his lovable personality by making him all brooding and filled with rage. He even lets out frustrated roars during battle, like a pissy teenager. God, every character in that game is so bad! Except for the Dahaka ofcourse.

Hmm, either Rush Sykes from the Last Remnant or Edge from Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

Rush defines the word doofus. A bit of a simpleton (in a peasant kind of way, honest and incapable of deceit). Also, everything he does makes things worse (and yet keeps repeating the same mistake). He is largely irrelevant to the story as well until the very end.

Oh, and his early 90's American slang is cringe worthy.

Edge Maverick on the other hand, I wanted to beat him to death slowly and painfully. He is the worst kind of idiot (even though apparently he is a chess master). For example, while cruising on his spaceship one of his crewmembers left her glasses in the shower that was currently being used by another woman. Rather than, you know, wait for the person to finish her shower, he decides to accept this quest and try to sneak in and retrieve the glasses without anyone the wiser. Obviously he was caught.

Even though he is smart, he doesn't think at ALL. He is far too idealistic and he is incredibly emo. There isn't a single aspect about Edge that I like.
