Nobody has mentioned Halo 2 yet? That's a surprise. I guess it's because now that 3 is out, it's not as big a deal...
Not entirely sure why people hate cliffhanger endings. Fair enough if its for the first game in a series and the developers dont know if they are going to make a sequel or not then the hatred is justified, but it was pretty obvious that halo was going to be a trilogy. Halo 2 ending with something along the lines of u just decimating the covernant would seem like a let down as they wouldnt appear as any type of threat. The way they left it is even tho they are somewhat crippled they are still very much a threat as they are right on earths doorstep. Just my oppinion of it anyway.
The main thing with Halo 2's ending is that it gets you all pumped. Shit's hitting the fan, suddenly this giant ship shows-up, they detect that Master Chief is on the ship, delivers an awesome one-liner when asked what he's doing on that ship, and then credits.
Cliffhangers are fine, but Halo 2's ending was such a major buzz-kill that it felt like a slap in the face. Not to mention that in order to finish that Cliffhanger, you not only had to buy a new game, but you had to buy a completely different system all-together. Imagine if Nintendo pulled that. Imagine them releasing some major hit title on the Wii, then finishing it off with a Cliffhanger that's finished on a DS sequel.
Sure major Nintendo fans probably already have both systems, but it's enough of a dick move to have a massive cliff-hanger at the end of a game requiring an additional purchase of a full game just to get one story. Then to amplify that by saying "You can only have the full story if you buy another one of our consoles"? It just screams of cheap marketing gimmick. Hence why Halo 2's cliff-hanger is quite a bit worse than most others.
