So this is sad day for Australian news and pop culture. Renowned Special Broadcasting Service personality Lee Lin Chin finally calls it quits after almost 40 years of being a figure of Australian television broadcasting at home and across much of the South Pacific (whether they liked to be able to receive it or not).

She first made her debut in radio before crossing into television journalism in 1980 ... covering topics from politics, fashion, and fine arts from Australia, East Asia and Europe. Her avant-garde stylings, perfect hair, cool yet cheeky demeanour beyond the news provided an instantly recognizable figure that came to be a respected newsreader and culture commentator. In the days prior the internet, she was the fastest and most reliable source of information on the international scene there was... parsed with adroit and authoritative tone and tongue.

Both personable and insightful, she quickly became a fixture of reporting and examining the vaguaries of pop culture, high fashion, politics, and Australian life throughout the era of the late Cold War into the technocratic Information Age.

The weekend face of SBS World News and numerous other guest and semi-regular special interest programs became synonymous with what was at one time considered the auteur station of the days of analog reception, and her popularity and commentary did not wane into the days of digital transmission.

Irreverent and a bit naughty, she expanded into the social media scene with politically charged commentary aimed at the politicians and capitalists of Australia (or more so in the interplay of these two things) that won her a lot of fans for her activities on and off the tv.

Last week I was up at the Great Barrier Reef. I think that GBR and I are very similar. We're both unique beauties, it's impossible to confirm our exact ages and rich old men just keep trying to drill us.

Somewhat reclusive and enigmatic in terms of her private life, her bombshell resignation from the SBS seemingly came out of nowhere.

It's a shame that a figure of news reporting that I just sort of grew up with is now retiring from our televisions, and it certainly feels like the end of an era for local broadcasting to lose such a commentator of the weird, surreal, and serious. Recently traversing into the realms of skit comedy on SBS Viceland. As well as a whole lot of social media trolling.

So whoever takes on afterwards certainly has big shoes to fill, to say the least. Figure it's worth a few words in memoriam.

I watched the last bulletin and it was pretty sad.
A good ending to a great career.

All in all, her final "outfit" was fantastically insane, just wow.

I know, it was gorgeous #.#

How the hell does SBS have this sort of wardrobe budget? I like the fact that right after this and those moving tributes she'll likely go straight back to trolling Anton Enus.

It was probably hers already.

Damn shame she's retired, she was one of the few things on the telly worth watching.

I remember watching her as a kid when she appeared in news updates before and during shows I'd recorded late at night. I always found her droll as fuck and more than a bit dull so this "irreverent" and "cheeky" is news to me. I wish she'd injected some of that into her monotonous newsreading, although maybe she had since I hadn't seen her since the 90s.

She did way more stuff than just the news.

She's now advertising the closure of the trainline between Epping and Chatswood and the buses replacing it:

That ... is a weird article. I was expecting a blurb beneath, describing the shot or its significance in Italics. It's just like she's just there and they happened to take a shot.

I was expecting something more along the lines of The Real Newsreaders of Sydney...
