I think if they make L4D3, it should have a ranking system but wait! Not one to unlock guns. Let me explain.

I love Left 4 Dead 1/2 survivors but wouldn't be awesome to make your own survivor? So every time you rank up, you get character models, pieces of outfits and such that you can change the colors of.

Also since they did this in Team Fortress 2 for weapons, Achievement specific clothes.

For the first time you run through the story, you should have to use a the defualt survivors. Though after that, your own. (they did this in LP2 and it worked well)

or instead of ranking up, you get currency like Reach, MAG, and COD?

Edit: As some as mentioned, also a choice of voices, so your characters will still talk during the game.

I guess it'd be okay in Scavenge or Survival when they don't talk to each other much, but no one reacting to anything environmental through usual Versus would just be dull.

Ah yes, me and a few friends have made the same argument. The only problem is the dialogue given by the survivors would be missing, but an idea to counter this is each player character having a voice type or something similar so they could all have said dialogue.

Unless they do the Saint's Row 2 thing where you give your character a 'personality' which would include a ton of pre-recorded catch-phrases. That could be cool, especially if you unlock more persona's and catch phrases as you rank up.

Yeah? No.

Just keep it like L4D1/2, perhaps darken the tone of zombie design and FIX THE GODDAMN HIT DETECTION (AND OTHER GLARING) BUGS.

What you've suggested is rather a huge overlook at the other more glaring issues the game has.

I don't think it would work. One of the main features of Left 4 Dead is how well every survivor is characterised, despite them only having a few lines each per level.

Having ten-thousand slightly different Zoeys would break that characterisation.

why would they have to be slightly different Zoey's and not their own character?

Well, any character really. They'd have to be a variant of something though. Anyway, I don't think the Source engine is really cut out for detailed character customisation without quite a lot of modification.

How about keep the regular characters for campaign and versus and a customisable set for survival and Scavenger.

I don't want Valve doing any more customizable stuff for fear that instead of a game about zombies I'll have a game about hats.
