No, no line crossing. In a game like L4D and RE5 a mic is 100% necessary. If I am playing RE5 and get a partner with no mic, I send a message asking them to use a mic, if they don't I boot and send them a friendly message reminding them that this is a co-op game and an essential part of co-op is communication with your team. Since I have not mastered telepathy, the mic is a necessity.

The only thing I would have done differently if I were you was to send them a message between missions as to why you shot them, and to get a mic.
exactly. you reenforce bad communication by failing to communicate. an XBL message explaining your actions was in order.

i think i may have joined a game with them after you guys left, because i started a No Mercy campaign and instantly got killed by all three teammates for no reason. i didn't even get to pick up a weapon or healthpack.

I have had very few bad experiences with idiot team mates in L4D PC. The worst we had was a rambo who kept shooting car alarms and wandering too far in front or behind the party. Eventualy we just stopped reviving him. Remember the universe will punish stupidity without your help, attempting to preempt the process will only make you look like a jerk.

While I cannot say that team-killing is the best or most efficient course of action, these people have no business playing a multiplayer game without the necessary equipment or experience, i.e. mics. The ability to communicate and cooperate is vital in a highly Co-Op necessary game like L4D, and the fact that they couldn't makes them little more than a liability.

All in all, I would have to say that your actions were negative, but at the time necessary.
And that they were just being dick players.
So because they didn't have mics they shouldn't be playing the game? That's what's called a twat statement. I played L4D without a mic for the first month, and while it's not as easy as it could be, it's entirely doable so long as you're a good player.
Saying that they have no business play it is like saying somebody had no business play Red alert 3 because they haven't played 1 and 2
Not even close. Not having a mic in L4D is equivalent to tying an arm behind your back. Now if you were besieged by the undead on every side, I'm pretty sure that your fellow survivors would be pissed at your "Look guys, one hand!" antics. It has nothing to do with knowing the back-story of the game (which L4D has next to none anyway).

If you know exactly what you are doing, it's not quite so bad, but in this case it totally was and would have prevented the situation. I also understand that some people can't afford mics.

P.S. I corrected the spelling in your post for you.
After my post i noticed you were discussing the x-box version, which IS much harder without a mic. I was talking about the Pc version where quick keyboard skills sufice.
PS ; and thank you for correcting my spelling, i type too quickly and dont notice them when checking my post.

I'm a terrible Team-Killer, but I swear they walk in front of my bullets - and that's not just an excuse. Whenever someone gets incapped on a random Campaign match, I shoot the zombie off them. But, of course, at that time, someone chooses to revive them. And, of course, they are pulled up INTO MY BULLET. And then, since they have low health 'Cheesus333 killed '____' appears for all to see, a black & red badge of shame. Other instances of my stupidity include:

Opening the saferoom door for someone at the same time as another guy, accidentally closing it in the Survivor's confused face.

Shooting a Smoker who has grabbed someone, missing, and killing the incappee.

Diving as a Hunter, missing, and plunging from the roof of Mercy Hospital.

Attempting to pull someone up, then dropping them to shoot a zombie, before being 'Smoked' and leaving them to die.

Etc...

I've team killed on two occasions.
The first time was on Dead Air when we were playing on Expert and needed to incap someone to keep the horde away while we jumped to the top of the plane and picked zombies (and 3 tanks) off from there. We ended up choosing the one guy who didn't have a mic, kicking him then team killing the computer.

The second time, was the No Mercy campaign in versus.
We got stuck in the elevator because they moved the generator in front of the door. We were slowly running out of ammo and decided that one of us had to kill the others and just wait for the tank to come to knock the generator out of the way. I was chosen for the job.
I incapped everyone else leaving them on the ground. Unfortunately it wasn't a tank that came, but 2 boomers. They both fell in through the roof. One puked on me and the other exploded as I shot it. I was heavily damaged and the horde came.

It sounds to me as if you has a couple of people who were deliberately hanging back to attract zombies to get achievements or something, in my experience this is generally the cause of people hanging back, so I think you were perfectly justified in TKing. I have had a similar experience only with people who had mics but didn't talk, and my reaction was the same as yours. In the end they turned out to be a pair of kids score-whoring, looking for a Boomer for Clean Kill.

This is a pet hate of mine. They deserve everything they get.

-The Background-

Since the game's release, there have been countless threads on any given site addressing the douchebaggery that goes on in L4D's multiplayer community- especially with the 360 players like myself. It seems to boil down to few categories- glitching, horrible playing, mic vs no-mic and team-killing. You can make more up, this is just how I simplify it.

As for me- I wear a mic, do not glitch in versus, don't suck, do look out for incapped teammates, and have never ever team-killed. I've also had pretty good luck in finding good people to play with, so I've looked down at all of the complaining about the community, and from the comfortable seat of my high horse, have usually said "well I don't have that problem."

-The Story-

A few days ago, I started a game of No Mercy with one good player (who will be called Good Guy #2 to protect his identity) and two guys with no mics. It seemed like the mic-less guys were having a hard time navigating or something. It took a couple minutes to get them down to the first floor and into the street, and they just seemed to stand around alot. It was confusing. The first level took way longer than it should have.

The second level (subway) went somewhat smooth until after the horde that is activated by opening the door (in the room with the generator things.) They wouldn't follow us up the stairs. At this point, Good Guy #2 and I decided to go on ahead. We got to the saferoom and waited, watching as they struggled. Finally, they made it to the street, where one died, leaving the other incapped. Since we couldn't otherwise communicate with them, the decision was made to shoot the remaining one in the head as a statement.

As soon as we spawned in the saferoom of the next level (sewer), the mic-less guys opened fire on us. Good Guy #2 and I raced to the diner while shooting back at them and slammed the door shut. Once they had struggled to the door we were standing behind, we opened fire, incapping one of them, and ran around a corner so the standing one couldn't shoot us. When he went to revive the one who we'd incapped, I went and threw a molotov through the hole we'd shot in the door, leaving both incapped and on fire. They died, dropped the game, and were replaced by to non-wanks.

-The Questions-

- Have I crossed the line and become a team-killing douchebag based on these two morons who's misery I helped put them out of?
- Does it help that I was laughing my ass off as I threw the molotov?
- Was it justified? - We did fire the first shot.
- If you raise the douchebag flag, then how would you handle it? (Can't kick- it would be 2 vs 2)
- Do I have to trade in my high horse for something else now...like a pony?
I've been in the same situation before and no were in no way over the line because this is a game about TEAMWORK. In order to work well together with others you need to have a mic in. So this is a message to anyone who plays Left 4 Dead without a mic, if you don't want to talk on the mic then don't expect to play online. I rarely play with people who have a mic because just one person without one can cause a re-run.

Use the Golden rule mate.
If you don't mind getting shot when you fall behind then by all means.
However,if you want to play a friendly game where you actually work together... A little flexibility is required.

There are few lines in this world, all you really get is where you put your line.
Be careful when you walk in the Grey zone.

A better solution in my opinion would have just been to find another game. The first level never takes long anyways. It's not like it would have hurt you to leave.

As much as you need your teammates, one or two moronic ones can keep you from finishing the level/campaign. The objective of the game is survival at pretty much all costs. If a player acts like a moron while playing the game, expect to die. You did the right thing, as I have done to players who constantly shoot teammates, burn teammates, and/or attract the horde and bone. If the player is being a moron because it's their first time, they shouldn't be playing online or on anything other than easy to get them used to the feel and maps of the game. Mics are a handy part, especially since hardly anyone without a mic bothers to listen to what those with mics are saying.

Sometimes a little douchebaggery is required to deal with morons and buttfaces who play online.

I've teamkilled with molotovs so often i've lost count, i've slammed doors in my friend's faces more times than I remember, and i've done basically everything else to grief, screw over and generally have a massive laugh at the expense of my friend's health - but they're usually doing the same stuff to me so its all fair (although no direct shooting) :D
We're good players, so we all manage to make it surprisingly frequently even on vs

killing that guy while he was outside the door was completely justified, especially in a versus mode. The major reason is though u r somewhat safe in the saferoom and shouldnt ahve to go out and kill him urself, there is a pretty well known glitch that allows hunters to get into a saferoom if the round isnt over yet. so yeah, someone that didnt kno that game wel (prob those players) would most likely take it the wrong way, but u did what i wouldve done

You know what i do when my team sucks and everyone runs off does there own thing or starts killing each other and yelling profanities and insults. I leave and find a better team. Team killing is just fuel to the fire. It solves nothing.

Oh dear. That is why I only play L4D with people on my friend's lest who I know will not completely half-ass the game. Also, I never play with someone if they don't have a mic. Communication is critical in co-op games, and not being able to speak with a team mate endangers the group as a whole.
