Yes, it's exactly what you think it is. Left 4 Dead has died forever. Left 4 Dead 2 has killed it's younger brother, it's a dead corpse is full of young maggots noobs and horrible bacteria griefers.
Allow me to tell you THREE stories of such Horrors! ALL happened today.
It's a cold day in Death Toll. The Sewer stinks like a tank. And so the tank arrives. Advanced difficulty, so we assume defensive position...at least, that's what I assume. 1 of our players, the best noob, runs for it, gets smoked and dies a horrible painful death. Bill is crushed by a tank. Zoey mashed into a corner. A single pistol shot manages to knock the tank down, just in time. 2 survivors remaining.
Of course, the hero closet soon has 3 of us kicking again. Suddenly, a surprisingly quick smoker (they get faster with each difficulty up) smokes Louis from behind! Both noobs...decide to climb up a ladder and grab pipebombs first. Just in time for me go down and be crushed by zombies. Francis is rescued after the lock. The three proceed up, Francis gets killed again, and Louis and Francis both get rescued.
The difficulty gets changed to Normal. We. Still. Lose. END
Attacked by Francis at No Mercy, number 2 crescendo event. Just manage to take the pills, autoshottie him to the ground in time. I change the difficulty to Expert, to get the better of him in time. Both pistolled to the ground. Zoey and Bill go down in a flood of zombies. End of Griefing. Back in the saferoom, I have a shotgun. Blast him to the ground. People join, we all go down, restart. Change campaign to Crash Course. Lose all 3 times. END
Ah, *wheeze of pipe*, I still remember this old fellers name...
*coughing* Gather round, young children, and I'll tell ye a story of Mad Hatter, the Mad fellow who darn tried to kill me! After a spiel of swearing on the mic, just after joining, such a person quiets down, and we make it into the Pawn Shop...
After the loading screen, things get suspicious. Mad Hatter drops Assault Rifle for Uzi, and I asked the old feller why? He said he f'ed my mother. I shrug, thinking he's just another internet cock. Suddenly, the mad-man starts blasting a full clip of Uzi into my back! 2 damage per bullet! Luckily, I managed to dodge around the first corner, take me pain pills and blast him with the autoshottie...down he goes, helped up by the bots. BLASTED again, helped up by the bots. Blasted the last time...off to the death hole he goes. A few parting shots, and he leaves.
tl;dr?

Left 4 Dead was dead to me long ago when they started patching fun things and making the game boring. I don't even feel compelled to buy L4D2 because I've gone from liking L4D to disliking it.

Hell, I even deinstalled it.

I'm not suprised L4D died a quick death especially with the DLC, oops I mean an entire new game which pretty much leaves no DLC for the first part. No, I'm glad it's dead.

Just establish a huge friends list, and make sure they have Left 4 Dead. And then play with them.

Also, I've only seen a couple of trolls in L4D1... what system are you on?

Truth be told, I have yet to actually play it with other people.

As a general rule I refuse to play with random crackheads on the internet, but none of my friends who have 360's own the game or seem to be willing to buy it.

To me L4D was pretty much dead about a month or so after it came out. By that time, everyone who got it at release were pretty bored with it and people who waited a while heard the stories of monotony about it. I don't know about you guys but it never really felt finished to me in the first place and the lack of variation in the maps made it so you were just doing the same thing over and over and over again.

I think the main problem with L4D was that there was a modding community out there but it was tiny and wasn't really heard of. If the custom maps were to have really taken off, people wouldn't have even bothered with L4D2 at all. It was nothing more than an expensive little time waster to show the very, very bare bones of what a good zombie game could be.

tl;dr, but cool story bro.

I don't much care, saw this coming when Left 4 Dead 2 was announced and cursed it for being retardedly against gamers. On the other hand I never played either game so I don't much care, what I will say though is that they bother me a whole lot less than MW and Halo fans.

That kind of stuff happens in Left 4 Dead 2 too. And it's only logical that most of the playerbase will move on once a sequel to a game is released.
The only thing I really miss from L4D1 is Bill, he was frigging awesome.

I know I've already answered but I need to get this off my chest.

I absolutely despise Modern Warfare fans because of what they've done to Call of Duty. I remember playing CoD2 and it was simply the best game I owned for online play. It seemed to be a little sanctuary from CS and Halo fans but then BOOM! CoD4 comes out and a lot of shit hits the fan. Suddenly everyone's concerned about not looking/acting like a noob, the community for it all takes a nose dive and, something which pisses me right off, they no longer even bother to call them Call of Duty games, they just get referred to as Modern Warfare. On a different forum, I was reminiscing about CoD2 and half the people wouldn't believe that it was set in WWII, they thought I was talking about CoD:MW2.

Anyway, sorry about that, just had to blast it out of my system.

Left 4 Dead was a great game...

Then i got bored and switched back to CoD 4...

I did meet some really neat people there though, and hey, if they havent removed me from thier friendslist i'd pop it in to shoot the breeze. And some zombies too.

On the rare occasion I played that game, I made sure only to do it with friends.
This is the only sure strategy.

OP: I've never played a L4D or L4D2 match on random, I always play with friends. Do that, and life shall be perfect for you.
Oh look you're back... since you've been gone they all convinced me to change my Avatar back. Looks like Soundwave's here to stay.

I can't help but feel a little responsible for your suspension too...

Ah don't worry about it, Soundwave be kool and the gang.

And don't bother yer head about the suspension either, that was my own stupid fault.
Sometimes I wish you had XBOX Live. That would be a laugh.

OT:

The only time I didn't have fun playing L4D with buddies were the times I played with No More Sanity... he does not believe in teamwork haha!

The only reason why it's dead is because the servers switched over to L4D2. I would still play L4D if I could still play with my friends. I have always said that L4D2 was rushed and cheap.

I still find it fun, but that's probably because I go and play other games when I feel like playing other games. No game is really meant to be played over and over again in a small amount of time.
Also, when it comes to people who annoy you, either play with friends, or just kick them. Hell, I once tried to kick a guy on my team because all he would do was complain about how terribly we were doing. Then, after seeing that it annoyed people, he miraculously changed his attitude, actually focused, and became a likable person.

it is funny that L4D is the better game, it is more well constructed, better presented, and more fun to play. i still play it regularly, but i do so with friends only. random pubs are full with nubs and greifers. and though L4D2 is the same, you have a better chance in L4D2 to avoid them because it has more players

Sounds more awful than a lot of online communities. Which is saying quite a lot.
