I really like the animated Series Legend of Korra. It may be not as great as the original Avatar but nonetheless I think it's still an amazing show that started out a bit wonky but got better, especially during Season 3 and 4.

I also really like Platinum Games. They made some of my favorite games in recent years. Namely Vanquish, Bayonetta and Metal Gear Rising. The fast pacing during the fights and the over the top action is great and Platinum Games always builds in some elements that made every of those games standout in their genre.
So, of course I'm a bit grumpy about bayonetta 2 being a WiiU excluisve. I really don't have money to buy a WiiU just for that game. Especially since I'm planning to buy a PS4 in the near future so I can play Bloodborne(the Souls games are another favorite of mine).

But to make it easier on me Platinum decided to make a Korra game. Back when it was announced I giggled like a little girl. Who else besides Platinum games could make a game that revolves around the awesome fight scenes from the animated show. It was a match made it heaven.

Now that I played it for a bit I still don't really know what to think about the game.
Well, I know that I really like the game. From the first moment it really feels like a Platinum game. You played MGR? You instantly get the counter system. You played Bayonetta? You will have no problems with timing your dodges and the charged attacks will make you feel right at home. The fighting mechanics are fluent and pretty responsive to to your inputs. It even shares the camera issues, you encounter in other platinum games. What takes Korra apart from the other games is that you can switch your bending on the fly. It's great fun to shoot icicles like turret before rolling away on an airball before crushing the rest of the enemies with massive boulders.
It's not as aggressive as MGR but also doesn't rely as much on dodging as Bayonetta does. It's a really good mix of both those games.
Also it's a pretty challening games. Sometimes the camera fucks you over and other times you'll die because you fucked up rotating to the bending style you want to use. But for the most part it's pretty fair. Playing good and using all styles makes fights easier and faster, while relying on one style can get you killed real quick. Everything is to my liking. They even gave Korra the same dodge-recovery as Bayonetta(just without the silly cat pose).

But I can't help but feel that all those similarities to their other game somehow hold Korra back.
Like I mentioned before, once the game started I knew what to do and since then there wasn't anything that was unfamiliar or even surprising. I know my attacks and I know the attack patterns of enemies.
Even the sections were you ride on Naga feel incredibly familiar.
But on the other hand, it's a 15? game with a really short development period, which is painfully obvious at times and I feel expecting AAA level of gameplay quality is a bit unfair towards the game.
What it does it does great.

I'd like to hear some other opinions on the game.

What its out? ok going to download now. Quite like Korra I feel the first season was better than anything the original Avatar did (which I also like) season 2 kinda fell flat for me and season 3 was great just waitin on the last one now.

I like a fair few of Platinum games I did get a WiiU just to play Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 so I am excited about this game. From your comments though it seems they have kept the god awful MGR camera which is a shame but I have no real opinions on the quality of the game yet not having played it. Im more excited about Bayonetta 2 tbh but I will be playing this as well.

Shame.

The Avatar setting is perfect for a game. They should have given it to someone better than Platinum, since Platinum just made the same game they always make, but with a Korra skin.

The combat felt "floaty" to me, for lack of a better word. Just hammering away at health bars. Animation is pretty lacklustre too. Also, apart from earth, the elements don't feel significantly different from one another.

Can't be bothered getting into nitpicky stuff like Korra not need water in order to waterbend. She just sort of summons it like she does fire.

At least they got the music right.

Ah well. Maybe someone else will get a crack at it sometime. I'd like to see someone go Knights of the Old Republic with the setting. That is to say, use the setting but not the familiar characters or plots.

Trouble is, they evidently didn't*, because a proper Platinum spectacle fighter with an Avatar skin would have been awesome. There is literally nobody in the business better at third person combat action than Platinum. 6-8 years ago then maybe Team Ninja but since Ninja Gaiden 3 was shit they've obviously lost it.

* Platinum are a more diverse developer than you think, they've done shooters and JRPGs as well as spectacle fighters.

I'd say Platinum are one of , if not the best choice. Pretty much every issue I have with the game, and I have quite a few, could be solved by giving them more time.

I feel that this always happens to games based on a tv show or movie. Take a look at the Naruto games, there is nothing wrong with them and they are actually great fun! But they couldve become so much better if they simply would of gotten the time and respect deserved from the developer. Or is that only my opinion?

Got the game gifted last night and I'm on the last stage, I know it's a budgeted title (only a few gb to boot) but I feel it's worth the £12 especially with it being made by platinum, sure there's not a lot of detail going on and a mini game like Naga's feels like a mobile phone type mini game but I feel like it reminded me of the old PS1 days where games back then had that as their own thing so I didn't mind it too much.

Gotta say the combat juggling is a bit iffy for me and I wasn't fond of the parts where I had to get my bending back (apart from Fire bending which helped level up my Earth bending to max), overall I the game was good enough for me and the music got me pumped when the fighting started, especially this tune:

In the end I'd say the game would have been better had Platinum been given more time, more budget and had the entire team together to flesh it out more, it would be nice to one day have an open world Korra game with skills to learn, sights and people to see and interact with than just pure fighting and running.

Also totally unrelated to the game itself, is anyone here aware the Zelda Williams, Robin Williams daughter plays Kuvira in Korra?, it totally blew my mind apart when I found out.

I wish it was developed as a full fledged game. But as it is, it feels kind of like the first in a series of episodic chapters. Might just be me though.

I also felt like the non-grunts had way too much health. Especially the final boss. Don't get me wrong, that fight was epic, but it dragged at the end there. And the sections with Naga were crazy hard, but that might just be me sucking... and also the levels felt like they went on forever. I think they could have halved the length of each chapter but doubled the number and that would have been fine.

Also, has anyone tried Extreme mode yet? Like... it's extremely hard. Way worse than MGR on Revengance mode.

I'm still having trouble with normal mode, and that probably mostly stems from the fact that I am very much so used to the Arkham style of combat, and it is really fighting with my muscle memory as to "LT" being the counter button as opposed to "Y".

Well. The first real fight in chapter 3 has a Mecha Tank providing long range support, about six regular chi blockers who move and attack at super speed, and 2-4 red chi blockers who have machinegun shock gauntlets. They annihilated me in about three seconds flat.

The Legend of Korra video game is on my list of games I'm excited for but also kind of meh about [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.862650-Game-s-youre-excited-for-but-also-kind-of-meh-about#21494938]. I actually started a discussion on this here gaming forum about games like that. Click on the linked words if you're interested in hearing my initial impressions on the game versus my more evolved impressions now. This goes into TL;DR territory, but I can't think of a short statement to sum up my opinions to put in a TL;DR tag. Sorry in advance.

Other than the opinions I stated on the game in the discussion I linked to, to put it simply, I can tell it's a budget game. While I know Nickelodeon and Activision are the main reason for that, I can't help blaming Platinum for its fair share on taking what little they were given and not maximizing enjoyment out of it. I know ordinarily that would be unfair because of executive decisions developers are forced to go along with, but I want an excuse to take Platinum down a notch. They have a cult fanbase that puts them on a pedestal because they had 3 good games, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Wonderful 101. If they're really that good, I'd think they'd make the most out of their constrictions. I've seen the list of the other 6 games they developed and they range from OK or slightly good to actually quite good with potential that feels worse than the former because said potential was botched. To be fair, I know I might be misjudging them. I've only played their game Madworld after all and judge the rest on hearsay, 5 minutes of playing Bayonetta at a friend's house, and what I've seen on Youtube. I acknowledge this.

Since I've now watched a full walkthrough of the game I think I sum up my concerns of the game itself:

1) The cutscenes look choppy. On top of that, they look like the show, but also not like the show and it feels off. The visuals lack density and polish to the point some argue you could have seen this game as far back as the PS2 days, maybe even PS1. I don't agree they're that bad, but for a game that only releases on last gen and current gen platforms you'd think it would look better and yes, I say that even for a budget title.

2) There is some match up to the real martial artist foundations of the fighting on the show, but this only applies to very basic moves. For the most part, the game has Platinum's classic flashy fight style and in an Avatar game it actually is a bad idea to focus on flash over substance as the substance of the precise, deliberate fighting is so well done in reference to real martial artist foundations that it is actually FUNNER to watch than flashy, crazy stuff. The Naga semi-infinite runner sections are just a gimmick to make up for the lack of budget. Infinite runners are lazy game design and rarely fun.

3) The fact that none of the major characters are in it is ridiculous. Mako and Bolin are only in the beginning and in the end and everyone else is excused away as not being in Republic City except for characters like Lin who are absent for who knows what reason.

4) The story behind the villain actually has potential in addressing how Korra should answer to decisions that aren't just hers (leaving the spirit portals open), but those of her predecessors as well. Instead it ends up mostly being cliche and lacks any serious elaboration due to the 5 hour campaign.

5) Speaking of which, the game uses the villain's ability to create barriers as an excuse to fall back on its overly gamey nature of "Defeat x enemies to proceed". It color codes enemies and you as you switch bending styles or go into the Avatar State. It puts all that nonsense in. At a time when people are asking for more immersion and less money collection (spirit energy, I think it's called, from enemies and pots), scores, hand-holding color coding, and other played out gaming tropes this game decides to put them all in.

It may sound like I'm asking a lot of a budget game, but I've manged to get $15 games with more rewarding content and visuals before. I really have. I personally think all the critic 3/10 and 4/10 scores are a little low, somewhere in the range of 5-6 is better (5.5?). Still, I think there is justification in the bad critical reception even if it is a little too harsh. It seems like only the user scores are so high because of the nostalgic fans, overly dedicated Platinum fans who will excuse flaws, and people who are new to gaming just to get this game though arguably those people fall under the nostalgic fan category. For every other user giving it high scores, that's fine. I have high standards and obviously a different perspective and I think no less of you or anyone else in this discussion for liking the game so much. I get the feeling the game is a fun distraction though and it is for that reason I will still buy it. I'm just waiting for a 50% or more discount.

Honestly i had great fun playing the game. I literally just finished playing through the story mode. Had a crack at the Rookie level for Pro-Bending and it's a neat little mini game. Rookie's easier than the story matches though so maybe i'll get a proper challenge from it tomorrow when i advance.

But for the game? Yeah, for something that costs about 15-20 bucks and is a download only title i'd say it was well worth the money. Combat feels just like you'd expect from a Platinum game with getting-used-to counter and dodge mechanics, epic final boss fight, etc. And while the combo lists are a bit lacking even when you buy the new ones from the shop the four elements and charge attacks as well as aerial combos means there's just enough variety to hold it up. I bet with more time and budget they could've made a longer game with more complex combos, but for a one-evening game it holds out enough to not get repetitive.

I can't say it's everything i'd wished for in a Korra video game, but considering Nick's attitude towards the Avatar series in general i think it's pretty amazing we got a game out of it at all, and that the one we got was at the very least a decent game is even more fantastical. I'd love to see Platinum get a chance to make something more grandiose out of it, but for now i'll be happy to bash my head against the Extreme difficulty mode over the weekend.

(Fuck those red guys with the energy gloves though. That one scattershot they do is garbage)

I only started to have trouble on the final match of Veteran. Then I saw the tip thing that said your team's strength in that mode was determined by your bending levels in the story, and my water bending was level 4. So I got it up to 8 and stomped Ace pretty thoroughly. Was pretty fun while it lasted.

If anyone wants to know the codes for the secret items (They were convention only), for the PC it's 1-1-3-3-M1 for Avatar Spirit Korra, 1-3-1-M2-M1-M2 for Shadow Fist Korra, and 2-2-4-4-M1 for Shadow Fist (the item).

Unrelated: I am an unkillable GOD as far as combat goes. But I'm stuck on the penultimate sequence of chapter 5 on Extreme, Naga vs the three Mecha Tanks. Kinda bullshit. They get new attacks, attack faster, their patterns become more complex, and you only get one health as opposed to the standard three.

I thought the game was a great budget title. If it had a setting and story on the scale of Okami (Platinum Games developed this when they were known as Clover Studios) I would die a happy man.

I feel this could be a great franchise if it were to get a larger budget.

I just finished the game on Normal last night, and Ace pro bending, doing Extreme at the moment. Normal can be pretty challenging at times (like some bosses requires you to do a lot of counters for example), and Extreme mode really nail the sadistic feel of Platinum games. I need something to freshen me up before Bayonetta 2 drops next week.

It's really much better than some of the arcade-ish games, but leaves a lot to be desired. I wanna see more characters in the show for example, playable is even better. Or we could have racing levels in Asami's car to bring some changes of pace. Nana's chase sequences drag on quite a bit.

It is worth my money, but I can see why people might complain about it.

Well, in terms of this discussion I seem to be the only one FULLY complaining about it so far (versus your nitpicks). From what I've seen "professional reviewers" have been commonly giving it 3s and 4s, Metacritic's aggregate score is 52/100, with the reviews often citing similar concerns that I, a person who hasn't even played it yet, had. Meanwhile, players are reviewing it overwhelmingly positively. At least, players are reviewing it positively if Steam reviews and the 4.5/5 on the PSN say anything. The actual player reviews often just cite it's good for a budget title and it's just nice to see something more competent than the original series' trilogy of games and it's Platinum rather than actual, serious analysis honestly.

I'm not saying this to put down anyone's opinion, but as someone more skeptical of the game it feels like there are just a lot of nostalgic fans and Platinum fans who will excuse flaws reviewing. There are of course people actually justifying their positive opinions with more in depth opinions and less superficial impressions, like on this discussion, but they feel farther and fewer in between to me. I still want the game, but I don't buy that this is good for a budget title when I've bought so many budget titles with more in depth content, heck, more content period, and more polish.

Forbes actually explains my frustration quite well. It's interesting how Forbes is a good place to go for gaming now while what they were originally intended for is where they are seriously lacking. The author even wrote a follow up article on how to make the game the Avatar universe deserves, but I don't think his ideas are necessarily the way to go. It's certainly not where I wanted to go with an Avatar video game anyway:

The Strange, Sad Abuse of 'The Last Airbender' and 'The Legend of Korra' [http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/10/22/the-strange-sad-abuse-of-the-last-airbender-and-the-legend-of-korra/]

Building A Better 'Legend of Korra' Video Game' [http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/10/23/building-a-better-legend-of-korra-video-game/]

And, now, I will make up for the cynicism I have put into this discussion that might be making some of you who just wanted to geek out kind of upset. I just stumbled onto this:

I liked the original Avatar series but I think the Legend of Korra is far better.. up until the final season so far.. the first episode of book 4 wasn't that great and while episode 2 was better, the third episode was a mixed bag.. thanks to the main villain Kuvira being way too obvious as the main villain from the moment she appeared on screen(i'm surprised she wasn't wearing a Tshirt that said "i'm the main villain of this season, who will try and take over the world" on it... haven't played the game yet, but i'm considering it since it's only $15 on the PS store.

And, Unalaq wasn't? Book 2 tried to paint a nuanced picture rather than something black and white while having Unalaq do obvious "I'm the bad guy things" and then had the characters react so astonished as if it wasn't obvious. Then, we got a literal black and white conflict in the fight between Unalaq with Vaatu and Korra. At least with Kuvira, they never pretended she wasn't the villain. I like that they were upfront about it. Sure, it's blatant, but I don't see it as something cringe worthy in its obviousness like others are claiming. Rather, that's what I thought Unalaq was.

Just finished Normal mode, I think it's pretty good. It's a solid, fun little XBLA game, and that's all I was really expecting and wanted. It's definitely a Platinum game, if Platinum made a $15 XBLA game. If you go into it with that mindset, as it just being a fun little action game, I'd say you'll have a good time.

I did have a few funny little thoughts while playing it. For instance, are you sure Korra even needs her bending? In the first chapter when she loses it, she still beats the ever loving shit out of the Equalists, sends them flying several meters (which is always amusing), and breaks 20 ft tall concrete walls with her bare fists.
