Ha, I'm glad to see such overwhelming distaste for this idea. But I feel compelled to bullet point a few reasons why this would be so awful so my post doesn't feel too spammy.

?The Zelda series revolves around single player dungeons, where you get items to get you through other dungeons. This doesn't translate into an MMO at all.
?Nobody knows enough about any of the other races to make playing as anyone other than Link enjoyable at all.
?There aren't enough weapons. And hearts aren't enough like levels.

Honestly I don't think Zelda would even make a good traditional RPG, let alone an MMO. Eesh.

That would be seriusly.... AWSOME. think of it, it could be AFTER TP, Link and zelda and gannon went on vacation(not a good plot but thats not for me to decide) Then you could choose from being Hylian, Zora, Goron, Bulbin, Goblin, a Horse, Fairy, a bird, and... well...
that would be awsome. they could connect the worlds. like take a portal to future lets say you draw a weapon, and you could go to Wind waker world, and take a boat to majoras mask world and what ever, i'm probobly the only one who says yes that is a great idea.

Absolutely not. Zelda is a single player experience in which you play 'the chosen one'. We can not have a dungeon crawler, with puzzles, while everyone is 'the chosen one'. It really wouldn't work. Looting items and such just is not Zelda.

Nintendo COULD make an MMO, just not from an existing IP.

Ok so lets think abotu a Zelda MMO.

First off it had to be action focused no real time stat based BS.

2. Character classes
Faction 1:Good
Warrior(Warrior weapons nut)
Hero(basic all type character)
Ranger(range weapon focused)
Mage(magic focused)
Sheikah (thief class that can either become ninja like with more magic and skills or thief like begin able to use more weapons and armor )

Faction 2:Neutral
Tiki warrior (Island warrior a mix of Warrior and hero classes, uses spears and bows)
Pirate (Well rounded with range and close combat weapons so so defensive)
Pirate Gunner (bombs and guns ahoy!,def kinda sucks)
Pirate thief(thief based class)
Pirate tinker(strange equipment wilder)
Tiki mage(Island magic user/summoner )

Faction 2:Neutral

Faction 4
Dark knight(dark warrior)
Dark Hero (Dark hero)
Skull kid(thief/mage)
Wolfman(Like Sheikah but has optional warrior path)
Witch/Warlock(magic user)
Dark Kokiri(not a race but a class of dark mischievous thieves)

3.Races

Gordon
Duku
Fairy (just shut up and hear me out, about the size of Dukus can fly, after a few levels you can grow up some have an "adult form".)
Zora
Rito(can;t use weapons and fly,can however use magic and fly)
Moblins(Bulldog/pig)
Goblins(the smaller ones)
Human
Hylia(elfs)

4. COMBAT MUST BE ACTION BASED with the option to use stat based automated fighting, refine it a tad, all characters share the same basic attacks. Jump attack, becomes smashing with weapon or magic depending on class. Sword spin becomes a 360 attack depending on class. and so on.

Now we need a stamina bar yes we have stats its just combat is not completely ruled by them, the stamina bar is used for 2nd level attacks(jump attack, spin attack, ect) magic is used for some attacks and a combination for others.

Now lets add a defense bar it soaks up and fends off attacks when you are out you can not defend yourself well and you take more damage when defending.

With the right piece of equipment you can share this with magic or stamina, the same for stamina, basically have equipment that makes the game fun and worthwhile.

Also the focus of of the game is not to be a grinding MMO but a live gaming experience with random and new story bits and quests, the game has to be fun and open compared to any other MMO on the market.

The game is setup as world heros vrs world villains, the NCPs being the brunt of world villains. You take the Zelda lore and apply it to a open fantasy RP experience, most puzzles can be gotten pasted with one player but alot of the neat stuff requires a team.

well thats all I haz for now.... mew brwains needz recharging...

Contrary to everyone else I think it sounds like a fantastic idea.
What pisses people of in MMORPGs?
Grind: well if it was in the Zelda universe you could simply level up by beating dungeons and bosses
Shity Combat: the Zelda combat system is one that not only is fast and efficient but also one that would work well with others especially with all the cool spells and items and what-not.
Also just think about how much fun it would be to run through dungeons with friends you could have puzzles and bosses that would require more then one person to defeat
An MMO without grind is an MMO without enough content. I'm okay with the notion of levels being dependent on achievements within MMOs rather than pure grinding, but I don't even want to think about the balance issues that would inevitably pop up.

As far as the combat is concerned, have you ever played with an MMO group before? The combat mechanics would have to be completely revamped since it is designed around Link's acrobatic fighting. Also (if I'm not mistaken) most of the magic in the Zelda franchise focuses either around Link's sword or the instrument of choice which is almost always non-combat. In order to balance a group MMO experience, they would completely have to overhaul this aspect of the experience as well and the result wouldn't 'feel' like a Zelda game.

That said, I would like Nintendo to try and make an original fantasy MMO that incorporates some concepts and aesthetics of the Legend of Zelda franchise. That idea has potential, but I think stamping the Zelda name on it would be a terrible decision.

I don't play MMOs because of the horrible grinding and incompetent gamepaly setups, hell its bad enough when SP games mimic MMOs in bland and horrible skill and equipment sets...(FF12,every other new Jrpg).

The "Lore" of Zelda is so bland and basic that if your looking for a Legend of Zelda MMO you best install say Everquest 1/2 to get what your looking for.

Or look up Graal Online which is basically Zelda 3 the MMO.

No, just no.

Although famous for crazy innovation (cel-shaded graphics, proper lock-on in a RPG) LoZ will never be an MMO. It can be a party game like Four Swords but never as anything on the same scale as most MMOs.
I think if they ever expand the mythos then the game certainly could be an MMO. It shouldn't, but it definitely could because Hyrule is huge and varied with races and content.

Oh and by the way, Zelda isn't an RPG (a common misconception that I made some years ago).

Everything has been done to death, hell even Warcraft rips WH40K off so no the uniqueness and subtlety of the fiction is not so much the issue, making the game fun for all is.

YES!!!!

...

Well, actually that should be a no. I was just trying to be unique.
Zelda is an action/adventure game, it would be practically impossible to turn it into an MMO and still keep that adventure aspect of the game.

Why?

Look at guild wars...it dose pretty good with the adventure setup... and think about it like this a world in 3D not a flat plane like 90% of MMOs.

If I wasn't clear on the post, I think it can work well. The concept of Nintendo making an MMO is quite insane, as it would be something pretty original in comparison to others I think.

Actually ignore the last bit, perhaps it would be better as an online ARPG like monster hunter? What would everone's perception of it be then, when it wouldn't lose much of it's game mechanic, it would basically be zelda only somewhat more detailed and online.

Think about it, hell I might even make a thread to see what people think (even though it will get crucified, but still).

Now that would work, the trouble is there is alot of mixed MMO/Zelda/Nintendo hate its all pouring out to diss it because its cool to diss it.
