Lesser known but awesome games

Most people have heard of Halo and Final Fantasy. However, I've noticed that some of the best games are ones that often have very small fan bases. Take, for example, Golden Sun, a pair of RPGs for the GBA that I am hard pressed to find anyone who knows anything about. The same thing could be said for Fire Emblem or Lock's Quest.

In that, this thread will be strictly for lesser known games that are better in nearly every way to their well known mainstream counter parts. It's all opinion, so please, no arguments on whether or not a game is good, aye?

I wouldn't say Golden Sun is "lesser known". It's just "handheld only", and a lot of people, like me, can't be bothered with handhelds.

Tribes: Aerial Assault. Halo Reach, but twice as better. It is a sequel to Tribes Vengence. I would also like to mention Pac-man world 2.

"The Darkness" is an awesome, awesome game, and should be played by everyone. Especially since it can be found new for the PS3 for about ?5.

Cultures 2: A unique RTS of sorts that focussed more on people than strategy.
Lego Racers: A cartoony racer that did what it did very well. Could have done with better multiplayer and a decent sequel.
Timesplitters 2+3: Injecting the FUN back into FPSes.

Show of hands, how many of you have actually ever heard of Chex Quest. For a game made entirely as a commercial for cereal, it's amazingly good.

Xenosaga and Odin Sphere. It's really hard to find people that know about this.

And, believe it or not, around here not many people know about Fatal Frame...

I would, considering even the hard core RPG fans that are my friends had never heard of it.

Shadow of Destiny is probably the most unknown and obscure awesome game that I know of. If you like games to have good stories, find a copy of Shadow of Destiny; it's on the PS2, PSP, and PC. It's basically a 3D adventure game where you have to stop your murder from happening in each chapter and time travel is involved. The game has 5 main endings that completely change the story.

Oh my, so many' let's see we got: Parasite eve, Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre series, Vagrant story, Ys series, Valkyrie Profile, Xenogears, Winback: Covert Ops, Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia.

Those are just off the top of my head, I'm sure there are plenty of others I can name off but too lazy to. Also, I wouldn't call Golden Sun lesser known, pretty much everyone knows about Golden Sun, it's one of those games people seem to lump into the same category as SotC, Beyond Good and Evil, and Psychonaughts. Everyone knows these games by now so calling them 'lesser known' is a joke.

I remember WAY back seeing my cousin play that game. I've been curious to pick it up for the PSP but given that it was like 8 years ago when I saw it, I hardly know if it's any good or not.

I liked Xenosaga. KOS-MOS is one of my favorite characters in any game.

Unfortunately, and what made me stop playing it, Shion is one of my most hated characters ever. Of all time.

One of the few Xbox originals that I still own is Close Combat: First to Fight, and it's still just an awesome game all around. One of my favorite military shooters ever.

Space station silicon valley for the N64. it was pretty much the first GTA but instead of cars you played as an alien microchip and took control of animals to complete missions.
IT WAS AWESOME!

I played it on the PS2 and it's a great game. Here's a PSP IGN review of it:

Odin Sphere, I feel, is pretty well known and was one of the last "big" games to come out for the ps2.

Although now gaining popularity because of the upcoming remake, the Splatterhouse series is not very well known. There are also a large amount of forgotten gems on NES, like Journey to Silius, Ufouria - The Saga (Not released in America, which explains why not many people know it) and Bucky O'Hare to name a few.
