And, believe it or not, around here not many people know about Fatal Frame...

Space station silicon valley for the N64. it was pretty much the first GTA but instead of cars you played as an alien microchip and took control of animals to complete missions.
IT WAS AWESOME!
I read about that once and loved the idea of using different characters with unique skills.
My own choice would be Breath Of Fire IV, I picked it up because it looked interesting, and I was blown away by the compelling storyline, quirky characters, innovative battle system, and one of the greatest gaming soundtracks ever composed. Sony need to release it on PSN yesterday.

I liked Xenosaga. KOS-MOS is one of my favorite characters in any game.

Unfortunately, and what made me stop playing it, Shion is one of my most hated characters ever. Of all time.
Agreed. Shion was just an unwanted character... but damn, do I want my Xenosaga Episode IV...

I am SERIOUSLY hoping Odin Sphere and Muramasa get an HD port. And if Grim Grimoire comes in, then welcome!!

Half-Life: Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

Both games are lesser known for being in the shadow of post-Half-Life an pre-pre-Half-Life 2. Also, they weren't officially made by Valve, which may have had many people skeptical.

Show of hands, how many of you have actually ever heard of Chex Quest. For a game made entirely as a commercial for cereal, it's amazingly good.
DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE!!!! When i was a kid that game was soooo fuckin awesome. I played that shit on my computer, laggy as hell, and I thought the opening movie was the coolest shit ever!!! I would even pretend I was in Chex Squad! (I still do...)

This is going out on a limb here, but Shadow of the Colossus?

I say that only because while I thought it kicked ungodly ass, and still does, almost everyone I know who is into gaming, from hardcore to the most casual of Kasuals, has either not heard of or never bothered with it. Just yesterday night, I showed it off to some friends who immediately started flaming it and mocking every aspect down to the minutia. Gameplay, story, graphics. Didn't even like taking down the colossi. Thought it was BORING. I was shocked.

It just so... amazing, and yet...

I'm not a big JRPG buff, but BOF4 is one of my favourites, love that game. The prequels are good too, you should check them out. I really hope they make another.

I'll go for Plok on the snes. I thought that game kicked ass when I was younger, but none of my retro buddies have heard of it.

I would say psychonauts, but considering everyone here is likely to have watched Yahtzee's video about it, I don't know if that applies.

Anyone remembers 'Nox'? It's an RPG back from 2000. The only person I know that did know it discarded it as a Baldur's Gate clone, but to be fair, it's a pretty good game. The storyline is just above decent (7/10), and while not super original, it's good enough to keep you interested. The main thing about the game is that it's pretty much bugless, the three 'classes' are all worked out and balanced really well and the whole game is just a blast to play through. The scary parts are actually scary (or tense, at least). Spells are fun, unique and original. Controls work perfectly without any troubles.

Funnily enough, the game also depicts the rise of a couple of minor stars - both Seann William Scott (Steve Stifler from American Pie) and Joanna Cassidy (Minor roles in Heroes and Star Trek: Enterprise) did voice acting for the game. Nox is one of the games that got ruined when EA went on their "take over minor companies" spree (the one that also killed Dungeon Keeper/Bullfrog).

Here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0LvXy8k6y0] is some gameplay, for those interested.

Does this qualify as lesser known but awesome? I think so.
Yes sir. Yes it does.

Metal Arms was the very first video game I ever played, and god damn, it's still amazing to this day.

RETRO. GAME. CHALLENGE.

This one isn't even old!

I had to import this one from America due to it not being release in Europe. I was damn sure I wanted it enough to import it. I was not dissapointed.

And it's even lesser known Japan-only sequel that is completely unplayable for anyone who doesn't have a walkthrough or knows Japanese. There's a adventure type game.....in Japanese. Good luck, importers! Took me a stupidly long time to finish the damn thing.....

The Void.

If you are interested in the evolution of games as an art form, and as a form of expression, The Void may not be your cup of tea, but you have to admit that it does pretty much everything right. It deserves at LEAST a cult following, but no one ever mentions it.

Also, Ill second Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Blue Shift is simply more Half Life, I.E. awesome, and Opposing Force is potentially even better then the original. Both were great evolutions of the series, and both seem to be forgotten.

Can you imagine the Barnacle "gun" applied to Half Life 2's physics engine? It would be bad ass.
