Something I saw in a game got me slightly curious and I wanted to use the Escapist forum as my guinea pig.

Don't take it seriously, I'm certainly not. It's just a bit of fun.

So anyway. One of the characters in the game said that drawing a picture of a little girl with long black hair and leaving it under your pillow before you go to sleep will prevent you from having nightmares (as the girl will have the nightmare instead). Well, when I actually thought about it... well it seemed more likely that you will have a nightmare because of this.... so I'm going to go to sleep now with a piece of paper under my pillow.

So! Anyone who wants to take part, just doodle on a piece of paper and go to sleep! Report back what happens on this thread. And finally, it's all just fun!

Good night! Well actually good afternoon... but I've been up all night so....... *snores*

That is illogical, I don't think that putting anything under your pillow will have any effect on your dreams. It might work as a placebo effect if you truly believe though.

You should cherish your nightmare, they are usually interesting, and I for one enjoy them as much as I do a horror movie/book/game.

The only recurring dreams I've ever had are nightmares, and I enjoy them greatly. It's like watching a t.v series or something.
That being said, no, I'm not doing this because I always dream about what I'm thinking about before I fall asleep. Usually going over awesome game moments in my head, but this will definitely cause me to dream about "the grudge" or something.

When I have nightmares I sleep with a knife under my pillow. It's an old Apache trick and it works pretty well.

I didn't enjoy my nightmare last night. Creepy guy I know chasing me through a department store bedding section. I was running fast!

But, generally just being tired, really really tired, helps a lot.

Should have slowed down he might just have wanted to ask for directions on how to get out of there!

OT: Like others i quite enjoy my nightmares, sure at the time they can be a bit scary but isnt that part of the excitement and what makes them interesting?

Illogical maybe but it's about your sub-conscious taking over once your asleep which if you believe in an external force (be it paper a night lite or etc.) will comfort the mind and likely allow for nights without nightmares. Note: I'm not a phycologist.

Maybe a dream confronting a nightmare or something involving the drawn girl could happen if you do it as a joke and not really thinking it'll work?

On a side note: I thought the Title was gonna be talking about creatures like the Succubus from Castlevania: Synphony of the Night who are female dream eaters. lol

To all of you saying that you like your nightmares, let me say this:

If you like it, it's not a nightmare.

OT: I find it hard to get comfortable when I hear something crinkling under my head whenever I so much as move from breathing, so chances are I would have one of those half-sleep repetition dreams that plays over about 400 times before I actually wake up.

One fun thing to try, similar to this, is to find a crystalline stone, like quartz. Lie down on your back, place this stone on your forehead right between and a little bit above your eyebrows. Close your eyes like you would when you normally try to go to sleep, get yourself fully relaxed. Then focus completely on the weight of that stone, and imagine yourself getting feather-light.

If all goes well, you'll feel like you're floating (I also feel really tingly as well). I think this is a form of self-hypnosis and subconscious suggestion, similar to what this picture thing is supposed to involve.

If I do that I will have a nightmare about a creepy girl extending her arms around my pillow and either breaking my neck or pulling my head towards her opening maw, extending from the picture.

I will put a picture of a girl under my pillow but I'm not telling you who. I want to dream about them so of curse it won't be a nightmare.

Placebo effect: You can get similar by unscrewing your feet to run faster. Your brain fixes on a strong image and your subconscious uses it as a rule.

"i love my nightmares because im so hardcore on the internet, i also eat kittens for breakfast!"

Nightmares are bad, ones that are like BOO scary arnt so bad but the really phsycologicaly chilling ones are. Can you wake yourself up at will once you realise its a nightmare? I can also but in a few of my nightmares i could not, making it incredibly scary.

Wow... is all I can say.. such a serious discussion about nightmares...

Well, as I said it was a bit of fun... and nothing happened. No dreams, no nightmares. Nothing.

As some people seem to say, it's might not really be a nightmare if you enjoy it and usually even the nasty ones I don't really feel to bad about. Even with nightmares of being tortured-ish never really woken up sweaty and breathing heavily.

Too bad no one else seems to have done it...

I'm sure you have checked, but for anyone else, make sure you haven't been misdiagnosed http://www.nightterrors.org/.

Are you sure about that?

OT: I would feel sorry for the girl so I'd just choose a girl I like so I can dream about them.
