This thread is physically making me angry.

Here's a song that wasn't written by Californian whiteboys with spikey hair:

We call this "Ska"
I call that the worst Miles Davis rip-off ever.
I know very little about jazz, so I can't really comment.
Okay, basically, all ska is is jazz dumbed down to average high school horn player status. (Most of it.)

See Streetlight Manifesto for an exception.
Not being complex doesn't make something bad; part of the appeal of ska is its simplicity.
Of course simplicity can be great.

I just don't see why they had to change the name.

Ummm, Because ska and jazz are radically different genres of music?

The Specials. Anyone who says anything else is wrong. They were the best band of the '80s ska revival ("Two-Tone music").

They're actually not.

Hm, I didn't forsee somone insulting a genre that isn't metal...interesting. Anyway, truthfully I'm not sure what defines Ska as a genre, I mean I lke it, I listen to it...but I'm nto sure what is and isn't considered Ska most of the time.

But everything's Jazz when you get down to the fundamentals (except for some music arising from European folk traditions).

Edit: I mean Western music, obviously.

You know what, I think your're onto something here, my boy.
They both use trumpets, you see.

Come to think of it, folk and metal both feature guitars, there's some blatant unoriginality going on here.

The amount of real (as opposed to American) ska mentioned in this thread makes me happy, ska is a fantastic genre. As are most genres that can trace their roots to the carribean (dub, reggae, dancehall, two tone, etc).

Not really into Ska, but I really quite like this song and the band that play it. Though they don't really play it anymore :/

I really don't see too big of a connection of Ska and Jazz. Unless you look at the first and maybe second wave.

As far as the ska bands I listen to:
The Aquabats
Streetlight Manifesto
Tip The Van
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra (The only J-band I'll listen to, and way closer to Jazz then Ska)
Mustard Plug
Big D
Sublime
Less Then Jake (Yes it does count as Ska)
Operation Ivy
ect...

Ska is the only thing I really listen to any more.

I've seen no mention of Bad Manners yet so let me make a mention of their track "lip up fatty". classic in my opinion, i only mention as my favorite band has already been covered the specials.

You may very well be my new best friend. I love ASOB. Hell, check my avatar.

But, any ska, these days, comes down to two bands:
Bomb the Music Industry! (They're so cool, they release all their music for free on their label's website)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Dypaw46fA
Streetlight Manifesto (Which i am finding to be a popular band on the forums. It's always nice to know there are people out there that enjoy what you do too).
