I say we play a little game. Organize the Zelda games you've played from best to worst.
Attempt to put Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword on there even if you haven't finished them (but not if you haven't played them at all)

I wanna know your opinions on individual Zelda games.

My personal list from best to worst

1. Wind Waker
2. Majora's Mask
3. Twilight Princess
4. Ocarina of Time
5. Link to the Past
6. Four Swords Adventures
7. Phantom Hourglass
8. Skyward Sword

I only really dislike the last two.

EDIT: You can also put Okami in there just to piss people off. I didn't because I haven't finished it yet, but you get the idea.

I've never played a Zelda game except for a few minutes of the original SNES title (can't even remember the name). If I wanted to get into the franchise would it be too late? Do those "best Zelda games" hold up in time, or is it just nostalgia talking?

Well, I haven't played the early ones (and I still have about 90% of Majora's Mask, and about 20% of Link to the Past to do), but here's my list as it stands;

1) Ocarina of Time (sorry).
2) Wind Waker.
3) Twilight Princess.
4) Majora's Mask (From what I'm told, this will probably end up higher once I've played more).
5) Skyward Sword.
6) A Link to the Past.
7) Phantom Hourglass.
8) Spirit Tracks.

Flip OoT and LttP and I completely agree. Although whether I put Wind Waker or Majora's Mask at the top usually depends on which one I've played most recently. Both are absolute masterpieces.

Would of preferred Majora's Mask to get the HD remake though...

1. Link's Awakening
2. Wind Waker
3. The Legend of Zelda
4. Ocarina of Time
5. Twilight Princess
6. Majora's Mask

Needless to say, my time with the Zelda series has been...interesting. The first one I played was Majora's Mask and I hated it, so I didn't feel like playing any of the other games. I did enjoy Link's Awakening, so I thought I just didn't like the 3D games. Then I tried Wind Waker and, while I fell in love with it at that point, I simply haven't kept up with the franchise as closely as I could. Probably has to do with the negative early experience I had with Majora's Mask.

As a side note, I have tried Minish Cap, Link to the Past, and Four Swords, but I didn't play enough of either to really be able to rank them.

Do the remake if you wanna get into Ocarina, it is OCCASIONALLY a little tough to stomach, but Majora's Mask is legitimately awesome if you do play Ocarina. Nah, it ain't too late. And yeah. They actually hold up pretty well, expectations in check.

The name of the SNES Legend of Zelda was called "A Link to the Past" I think. But no, it's not at all too late to get into the franchise at all! The Zelda games are really easy to get into since, aside from a few references, they're plots aren't connected too much. A lot of the old Zeldas do hold up really well, if you don't want to chance it though you can always start with some of the more modern games in the series. I'd recommend Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, A Link to the Past, Twilight Princess or (if you don't mind motion controls) Skyward Sword for your first tine, these are usually considered the best in the series.

As for my list I suppose I'd say:
1. Wind Waker
2. Skyward Sword
3. Ocarina of Time
4. A Link to the Past
5. Oracle of Seasons

... And those are the only one's I've played enough through to be able to rank accurately.

Oh ho!

Link to the Past (The best by a country mile: I still replay it annually)
Ocarina of Time (It would be the best, but sadly it hasn't aged well.)
Majora's Mask (Good, maybe even great, but the central town gets really old really fast.)
Skyward Sword (I haven't played it, but I do like it's art style.)

...and that's it for me. For one thing I have had zero desire to play on a Nintendo console since the 64.

Oh, and just to counteract most others, special mention to Wind Waker for being the ugliest art style I have ever seen in a game. Seriously, I have thought so since I first saw screencaps before it came out, and I still do. I cannot understand how anyone could look at it and not hate it.

Zelda games are kinda samey to me. A lot of the things I like in a game can be found in the other games, so it's more a matter of nitpicks and picking over the scraps I like. The franchise also tends to give me at least one thing to outright detest in the games I tend to otherwise like (except for Link To The Past, which I see as the simplest, purest, least flawed Zelda game I've played). Was really liking Skyward Sword until it started to feel like pointless busywork and padding (hell, I could even forgive the motion controls). Twilight Princess I generally liked, but then I look back and recall how BROWN it is sometimes and how unremrkable wolfy was. Majora's Mask was unique and had atmosphere up the butt, but at the same time the 3-day mechanic was cumbersome (though I still find it to be the most INTERESTING Zelda game, so cool your jets). Most recently I played Wind Waker and loved the combat, art style, and the feeling of sailing, but then the escorts and the Triforce shards happened and I got really frustrated.

So...ya. Some of these can be placed in different orders and it wouldn't make a difference. Depends on my mood.

9. Phantom Hourglass (ok, I'm short on Zelda games. I'm actually not a fan of this game and see Spirit Tracks as a big huge apology)
8. Spirit Tracks
7. Majora's Mask
6. Wind Waker
5. Skyward Sword
4. Ocarina Of Time
3. Twilight Princess
2. Link To The Past

*dusts off her usual "Favourite Zelda Game" response*
...a game that does Zelda better than Zelda

EDIT: Damn it! Ninja'd!

Admit it you were looking for a CD-I game when you clicked on here. Shame on you! I wouldn't go that far!

Doesn't count? Pfft, fine. Scooch everyone up a number.

The top 5 of what I've played.

1. Obvious Ocarina is obvious. I played this first on the 3ds and it is just the best of them all IMO.
2. Twilight Princess. Dual-form mechanics and the best dungeons in the franchise, a hair behind OOT.
3. Phantom Hourglass. I know most dislike it because of the ocean temple, but I loved everything about this game.
4. Majora's Mask. I understand why people are in love with this game, but I really don't get along with the time limit mechanic. That said, damn this game is good.
5.Oracle of seasons. One of the first I played and beats out minish cap and ALTTP as top 2d zelda for me. Annoying that you had to have both games for the proper ending though.

OOT and TP remain two of my favourite games of all time, and will probably remain there for the rest of my life.

Wind Waker is probably in my top five games of all time, I think it's the first game I played that really got me into gaming as a kid and I'm kind of considering getting a Wii U just to play the HD version.
