The rumors are probably true. Microsoft pioneered the idea of online activation with Windows XP. People said they would avoid upgrading, but of course almost everyone is using XP or later by now.
And some of us are all the more enthusiastic about the idea of Linux killing Windows because of it.

Seriously, if they ever perfect Wine, Windows is finished. Aside from games, Linux already has a lot of the best software Windows has. If they could ever get Direct X to properly work with Linux, Wine to actually be easy to use and run Windows programs without problem, and get more folks to abandon DirectX in favor of OpenGL, there would be no reason to still use Windows and we would all be better for it.

I'll start by saying I don't believe any of these rumors that have been floating around most of them are pretty ridiculous if not simply impossible, that being said I'd still purchase them even without the ability to play used games because I almost exclusively buy new so it wouldn't really effect me, the same goes for the rental aspect I rarely rent so losing either feature wouldn't be as big a loss as missing out on those new games.

Let's just assume that the next-gen console rumours are true...
You know ... Honestly? Lets not. Because really is it a good idea to keep talking about it so it actually gives them ideas? Really?

I so solemnly swear that any console that purposely chooses to attempt to negate rights of ownership by releasing a console where it is not possible to buy and sell used games shall not get one cent of my money for their console until that grievous error is corrected.

I have every faith in my ability to stick by this. I dont buy from Ubisoft any more(except by honest accident in not knowing it was a ubisoft property.), I am not allowed to utilized advertised functionality in the PSN thanks to a patch provision forcing me to yield my right to sue Sony in a class action suit and I will not let the manufacturers get away with screwing the video game industry, the economy as a whole and the consumers over. Period.

Anyway, if you couldn't use secondhand games, wouldn't that kill game rentals? They are, by nature, used by multiple people aren't they?

In any case, whichever company goes live with their anti-used game stuff first will be a guinea pig for the other companies.
No you would just have a specially licensed rental copy.
Also sources that say things like, Orbis sounds like the word four, should not be cited as anything more than a joke.

Well if the rumors are true (which is starting to look like they are) then it's time to save up for that PC i've always wanted. YAAAAAAY i'm gonna be a PC gamer, hopefully you're more civilised then console gamers.

Honestly, while the second-hand bullshit is definitely the dealbreaker, I probably wouldn't get the consoles either way. I really don't want a new console, nor do I need one. I seldom use my PS3, I prefer to game on my PC. Also, I think my PS3 has years of life left in it anyway.

Doesn't our own escapist crack the occasional joke?

And I wouldn't necessarily agree with the licensed bit. You could give out special copies, but if those get stolen? Suddenly someone has a copy that can be... copied. To make more copies. Urk. :/

Even if that's not a problem, the company in question could just have potential customers buy their games through a traditional retailer instead of making money through a rental business. I don't know what the financial difference would be there, though.

I agree with you (aside from preferring to call that system GNU/Linux [http://www.gnu.org/gnu/gnu-linux-faq.html]), but unfortunately the paragraph you just wrote could have equally well been written in 2006. :-(

not buy one maybe a controller if I like the new designs and if they work with the PC.
I will stick with the PC older games work on it without any trouble and I have steam.

Big if and there are a lot of life concerns that can come up between then and now that could still change things. I'll likely stick with my 360 for another couple of years until I wear the hardware out. Then I'll probably either be desperate enough and the issue be far past the point of mattering that I'll either pick up the new console or finally build that gaming rig I've been deluding myself into thinking I've wanted for a while now.

As I said before: I'm getting a WiiU. The rumors don't apply to me. I'll just sit back and laugh.

I just bought my PS3 a year ago. I'm in no rush to buy a new console, but the timing for the next console cycle seems right. I'll probably end up buying what ever comes next... eventually.

Edit: Just realized this didn't actually answer your question.

Assuming it's true. I would be annoyed... maybe annoyed enough to even write an angry letter that no one is going to read. But it wouldn't turn me off from buying the system. The fact that I am poor is what will turn me off from buying a system.

If it does happen (which I doubt it will), I won't be getting the NextBox or PS4. Most of the games I purchase are older, used games. Microsoft and sony essentially lock me off from my main source of games with this. If I can't purchase any games for it, why would I purchase it? I would just stick with the WiiU and PC for that gen.

Fuck their games and the consoles they rode in on.

I don't even buy used that often and that offends me. It's... just... no. No.

Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.

No.
