Let's make a console!

With Microsoft addressing concerns, leaving question unanswered and answering others in a profoundly stupid way i asked myself what should be different to make a console actually attractive.

I want to be able to use my console to play when i'm not at home. I'd carry it somewhere, plug it in and play.
I wouldn't mind much if i'd have to plug in another plug, like the RJ45 plug for internet access.

If the console wouldn't allow me to play any games when i'm somewhere without internet access i wouldn't buy that.
Internet access could be used for verification of the games to check if they're legit copies.
Now if publishers could eventually "free" their games of that requirement so that my hypothetical console would play them even if the internet can't be reached i'd be fine with that.

If i'm abroad and can't play the newest games because of lack of internet access i wouldn't mind too much if i could play some older games where the publishers patched the need for internet verification out. Later, there should be "classic" editions of those games (maybe like the platinum games on the original playstation) that are already patched to not need any internet verification.
Internet verification for copy protection services should be patched out after about six months to a year.

That way, if you're in a position where you can not access the internet you could still play games. They may be a year old but don't be a snob :p

I wouldn't care much about the kinect being always on. Pull the plug out of the wall, problem solved. Microsoft still didn't say anything about the security of the kinect. Is it possible to get a trojan that would have the kinect record me while i'm playing? That is, if it doesn't do that already...

Welp, microsoft can market that thing in whatever way they want to; if they attach it to something that i buy i will accessorize it with a black plastic panel.

If i wanted to have something like a kinect on the console that i'm building, i would do my very best to ensure potential customers that it is safe to use. I'd probably have a shutter on it with an actual little lever that you'd have to manually push open when you want to use the kinect camera.

About the "used games fee". I would be able to swallow that if microsoft told me that a big part of that actually goes to the developer of the used game. And if that fee was very cheap.
After all, if i'd borrow a game, i'd have to pay it twice. Once to glue it to my account and once when i'm done and transfer it back to the account of the person i borrowed the game from.

And another thing that got totally overlooked in the presentation of all the consoles: Will they explode?

The consoles last time around where laughably flimsy. Especially the first xbox 360. I do not trust a company that made the xbox 360 to make a console where everything works right and continues to do so for a few years.

With the new xbone, i expect some problems to come up: Even if the actual machine will endure the apparently daunting task of actually playing games on it, i'd be very surprised if there wont be a lot of people who can't do the internet verification despite having internet access. Or maybe the servers with which the xbone would communicate to verify games will crash or just wont work for some other reasons.
Again, microsoft said nothing about the security of those connections on the customer side or the server side.

The old software on my phone would have me bind all my social media accounts together. Because i need to have facebook on my phone apparently. Got a new OS on it rather quickly.

Would be awesome if i could do that with a new console. A man can dream...
If i where to build a console i would not bother with social media integration whatsoever.

I haven't heard anyone tell me that it'd be really nice if they could have their games automatically tweet the progress or something.

My console would have a dashboard with very little advertisements if any. You could download applications onto the console, a netflix app or, if you really want to, a facebook app.
That would be the extent of social media integration.

If i included something like a "share" button i'd call it the "record" button. You could record footage of the game you're playing onto the harddrive of the console. To be transferred to a computer where you can edit it or let it rot on that hd for all eternity for all i care.

I kinda like Gamerscores, Trophys and Achievements if only for the optional metagame.

All in all, i think any console manufacturer should be glad if they could hire me as an advisor because apparently i'm better then they could ever hope to be. Then again, that's not much of an effort really...

It would appear the description of your ideal console is actually only a fraction off from Xbox One... so you might as well get that, and I'm predicting most others will revert to their state of indifference and just buy it once they burn out on MS hatred.

OT: Oh and my perfect console would be something like Steambox, pre-built and loaded compact PC that is assured to play games without extra work, and upgrading can be done on own accord.
Except it would support all services in the same interface, feature searching and filtering across everything, list known problems for every game, warn about bad platforms, also feature every emulator doable from day one, and obviously have top optimizations for Wine, also not a closed platform by any means, aiming for unified mod support across several sites,...

It would cost an extraordinary amount and fail spectacularly because people are afraid of change, not to mention every company would want it out of business immediately.

Truth.

I wouldn't mind a console made with a built-in screen given how needlessly fancy and expensive TVs are getting when bought for the sole purpose of gaming, but price and portability are both factors that would be adversely effected by that.

What do we want?! The PS2! When do we want it! A decade ago!

Seriously. What was so hard about giving the best console ever a minor graphical processing upgrade and calling it a day?

Maybe a modem if you're into that.

The "all in one" device wont happen just yet; the hardware isn't cheap enough to just throw it in with a new TV and even then you'd need a format for that hardware to be added to the TV systems in order to have as many games as possibly play on as many TVs as possible to have as many potential customers as possible.

Those things would have to be rather cheap, otherwise many people will just keep their "old" tv and play xbox 360 and gaming as a whole becomes like the "Neo Geo" community; a bunch of either rich or very dedicated gamers which, in this day and age are too few to warrant any of the AAA project costs associated with modern titles, not even if the individual games cost up to 500$.

That one! That's the one I want! It would also be the shortest but best launch conference ever.

I'd like a console that's compatible with every successful disc-based console all the way back to the Sega CD.

One that takes USB and bluetooth controllers (with control mapping built into the firmware), including keyboard and mouse... and I don't care if they need to make it twice the size of a full tower PC case to get that done.

Lets make a console? Ok, let me try:

1.Better hardware and graphics then last iteration.
2.Backwards compatible: plays last gen games both on disc and through digital service.
3.Used, rented, borrowed and given games allowed with zero stipulations or extra fees.
4.Comes with cute gimmick to entice casuals, but the gimmick is NOT NEEDED AND NOT REQUIRED TO BE ON.
5.Retardedly simple interface and menu screen with Zero ads.
6.No forceful attempts to do what Smart TVs or phones can do. Netflix and stuff is fine, but no cramming down throats.
7.Old game controllers/accessories work with newer console, but better ones are made for newer console to entice purchases.
8.Do not outwardly insult consumer base at press conferences.

One that you can plug-in with a few wires, backwards compatible, has a ton of good exclusive games...oh, and just put the disk in, push a button and chillax with an awesome game.

You know what . You saying that , i just imagine how hype it would be , if nintendo ( i mean seriously their our only hope now ) held a press conference doing exactly that . A guy walks on stage To Present the console . Plugs in console and insert the disc and says :" this is our console , you plug it in , you insert the game , and you play ." , then drops the mic and leave . With the trailer of an new metroid game that boots up .

Well, i kinda like some of the new stuff you can do with the current generation, like the platforms you can download games from and install on your console.
You had "big" games on the one side on discs that cost 60$ when you buy them new and on the other hand you had the "small" games that some would hesitate to even pay a dollar for.
Like about a million billion tower defense games. Which may or may not be good, some of which will give you more hours of fun then some "big" games. Tower defenses will keep your occupied for a longer time then any "halo" title if you prefer singleplayer mode.

In any case, the download platforms opened up opportunities for anything in between. I want to be able to play the next indie hit on my next console, even if it's "just" a four hour game or something.

The simple "plug in and play" thing with no extras what so ever might have some appeal, but i wouldn't discard all the things the current generation brought us.

That's a good idea, but only one problem: There's no optical disc technology that would allow for fast enough disc reading speed. With next gen graphics and physics I doubt it'll be possible to run the more graphics-intensive games directly from the disc.

So that means that the games would have to be sold as flash drive cartridges (which would make them much more expensive than the games we have today), download-only, which means that as soon as the next console comes out those games will be lost, or the current model of buying a disc and installing the game on the console's HDD/SSD.

Here's my console.
It's a _____ shaped electronic device that plays games.

Sarcasm aside, backwards compatible to the prior generation, and won't overheat to the point of mechanical failure.

For the record, I do enjoy all the little side things that some of the current gen consoles have, like a store for downloading games, the general idea of the desktop/dashboard, trophies/achievements, but I can if required, live without them.

Well, aside from the obvious takes games in the shape of discs that are physical and plays them, auxillary features I actually would like are cloud saves - meaning physical saves are backed up periodically on a server and can be accessed if something happens to the physical save, and would also detect hacking, in-console screenshot and video recording functionality, saved as pngs and whatever video formats on the console and transferrable by USB or other storage media, backwards compatibility with the associated predecessors and nominal voice commands, which sound like fun. And robust as all f*** please.

I'm wondering whether that's really true. You can't spin the disk much faster, but you can read from multiple places simultaneously. You could have a drive with say 8 read heads, and it could read data 8 times faster than yours does. You could split a strong laser beam into 64 beams and read 64 times faster. You could (maybe) bounce the laser off a rotating mirror so the beam scans from the outer track to the inner track in a very short time, possibly allowing you to read the whole disk in one revolution.

You could also use the hard drive to cache disk access instead of installing. Rather than make us copy the entire game to the hard drive before we can play it at all, just load what we need and put it on the hard drive for faster access the next time we need it.

I'm going to go with the pasta sauce answer. I like consoles but I also like pc, handhelds, android gaming (the potential for it anyway like a fast, light, mini computer anyone can make stuff for). So long as a console mainly supports physical media, provides worthwhile features like game capture, contemporary graphics, and ease of use then I'm content

Mine is one that is deliberately vague about the DRM used, is also vague about anti-used game, leaving the choice in the hands of the publisher. Imagine if you were publisher your choice is money, or no money which do you pick? Always online is a must or at least every 24 hours and mythical "cloud" computing that may or may not be a lie included in that. Let's not forget an always activated webcam (maybe) in the middle of your living room (already know a hacker that can remotely activate web cams, how hard do you think this would be?). I shall call this The Herald of The Console Apocalypse, by Hugefirm.
