Chapter 121: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

What better way to start off the month than with a birthday? Little Veok is now a year old. Oh she's just precious! Aside from the rotting skin I mean.
Yeah, Little Veok caught the same syndrome as her mother Commander Root. Unlike her, she has yet to receive any treatment and has not recovered. Despite looking like a zombie she's still a cheerful young child. I guess that's why Root didn't think it was necessary to leave her in the hospital. She refused to leave a young child in anyone's care other than her own. Which is admirable, I guess, but it's also kind of foolish.
Still, Little Veok should be just fine. With the medical expertise of Lupus Amens, she should make a full recovery!

What.
No! NO! This wasn't supposed to happen!
Stinthad: "Lupus what the hell?! I thought you told me you were a professional doctor, and yet-"
Lupus Amens: "Please Miss Kekimtobul, I AM a professional. I can assure you nothing could be done for that child."
Stinthad: "But everyone else was fine! Even Alpha is back working in the forges! How come Little Veok couldn't make it?"
Lupus Amens: "Well, osliostis is quite a unique disease. A young growing child simply can't handle having every inch of their skin rot. If you want the specifics, I believe a sudden growth spurt caused her bones to literally split out of her decayed skin. She bled to death as a result."
Stinthad: "..."
Lupus Amens: "Quite horrific, I know."
So many kids keep dying here...I feel like I should be doing more to protect them. But then what can you do when the mother refuses to give the child medical attention?

Root and Aidinthel are handling Little Veok's death about the way you would expect. Root has fallen into silence, in what I assume is a combination of guilt and anger. She pushes her squad harder than ever now and doesn't tolerate any nonsense. None of the soldiers have complained. Almost all of them have worked with Root long enough to know that this is just a phase. She'll be back to normal in a few months. It's not like her to dwell on the past. On the bright side her wounds no longer spew miasma, so she isn't a walking health hazard anymore.
Aidinthel, on the other hand, has been drinking even more than usual. That's quite a feat when you think about it. He's been causing some trouble stumbling around the fortress rambling in a drunken stupor. He actually burst into my office to complain about some weirod kicking him out of the mason workshop he was "working" in.
Turns out this was actually true though.
The weirdo he was referring to was...well I'm not really sure what to call her. She never told anyone her name. Ever. I don't know why, she won't talk about it. Some of the other dwarves have taken to calling her "No Name", or similar variations. She doesn't seem to care. Well now she's taken hold of one of the workshops and begun working on a secret project. I guess it's a mood, but it's hard to tell with a peculiar dwarf like her.

These new recruits are...uh...really bad. Like, worse than the ones we usually get. They've been wailing on some poor death pod for over a week, but can't kill it. The thing is crippled, bleeding, vomiting, and unconscious yet they can't manage to kill it. It's a pretty pathetic sight. Still, I'd rather have bad recruits than no recruits whatsoever. I'm sure they'll get the hang of this...eventually.

It seems that the goblins have once again tried to take us out. It started with a startling amount of child snatchers attempting to infiltrate the fort. Fortunately their cover was blown as they crossed over the bridge. A total of 5 goblin thieves were counted. That's pretty shocking, but no matter how many they send they will never infiltrate Reveredtour.
Of course by this point we are privy to the goblins tricks. A large number of thieves is almost always followed by an ambush. I ordered the militia to gather at the entrance so that they would not catch us off guard.
Unfortunately, they struck sooner than I had expected. A lone dog chased the goblin thieves away from the fort, but the goblin soldiers leapt from their hiding spots and quickly assaulted it. This represented a serious problem. I had ordered the soldier to amass at the front gate, where the goblins now occupied. They would inevitably arrive in small numbers and not be able to attack all at once.
To make matters worse the charge was being led by a total novice. Xpheyel was a fresh recruit, but he had the courage to tackle the goblin threat head on. Such admiration is admirable in soldiers.
...I just wish he had the skill to back it up. Xpheyel was quickly overwhelmed and with help only just arriving, his death was sadly inevitable.
Undeterred by the death of her comrade, Emily bravely charged towards the goblins. She was just as inexperienced as Xpheyel, so the result would sadly be the same...
But to my surprise, it wasn't! Defying all expectations, Emily managed to nimbly dodge every blow the goblins threw at her. She held off the goblins off long enough for some of the other soldiers to arrive. Now the fight was turning in our favor. Our soldiers are better equipped and better trained than the goblins at this point, so when the numbers fall in our favor...
The goblins start losing. All it took was Signpost cracking open one goblin skull for the rest of them to realize they were outmatched. They quickly took to their heels and attempted to flee.
Most of them got away, but one goblin was not so fortunate.
I'm surprised to say this, but despite the tactical blunder at the start, this battle went well. Xpheyel may have fallen, but that is expected at this point, as much as I hate to say it. Some of the recruits just won't make it. However, the rest of our soldiers performed very well. For the most part the fighting was carried out by the Earthen Tomes to, so our most experienced soldiers weren't even in the fray. We've had some troubles with the military in the past few months, but things are starting to look good. I don't think anyone is even injured!
Well except for Sixcess. She was the hauler that initially spotted the goblin thieves, so she got tangled up in this mess. She got beat up pretty badly, but I think the healers can take care of her. I'm having the military stand guard at the entrance in case another ambush shows up. However, I don't think the goblins are going to try that again anytime soon.

I was hoping to end this year on a triumphant note, but fate has once again worked against me. Lupus just handed me a very disturbing report. The farmer Sodel came into the hospital, complaining of intense blood swelling on every part of his body. Clearly this was the work of some terrible disease. Lupus told him to lie in bed and promised to treat him as soon as he could.
However, in just a few minutes Sodel was dead. He apparently suffocated. Oddly enough all visible signs of the swelling on his body are gone. The only reason I even know it happened was because Lupus told me.
I'm gravely concerned by this death. See, this has happened before. Last year, Rhiannon was found dead. She had suffocated, but there was no indication about what had happened. I can't help but think that these two deaths are linked. Which would mean that the disease that killed them...is contagious. I had hoped that Rhiannon's death was just one odd occurrence, a tragic outlier we could ignore. But how can I ignore it when another dwarf may have just suffered the same fate as her?
I have no idea what to do though. We don't have any idea how the disease spreads or where it came from. Two dwarves with no apparent connection died from it, but why no one else? I can't stop the spread of this disease if I don't even know how it is spreading.
To further complicate things, there is another dwarf that may have some connection to the disease.
Clogged Donkey is an ordinary forge master, with nothing significant to distinguish him from the rest. But last winter, he came to the hospital suffering from a horrific disease. His body was swollen with his own blood. This is the same fate Sodel suffered from, and possibly Rhiannon as well. However, those two died from the disease, while Clogged Donkey made a full recovery. Why would he survive when they didn't? None of this makes any sense.
I could be dealing with a threat to every dwarf in Reveredtour, and I have no idea what I can possibly do about it.

You know I was really happy when the goblins fled. I was glad I had a somewhat interesting update that ended on a positive note for once. Then a syndrome comes and ruins everything. Thanks game.
