Chapter 99: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

1st Limestone, 1058, Early Autumn
Autumn has arrived, and our situation is identical to that of the last month. The goblin army has us trapped behind the fortress walls, with nothing to do but wait until they inevitably retreat once again. Though I imagine that won't be for several months. By that time the dwarven caravan will have arrived and no doubt been slaughtered by them...if only I could force them into retreat sooner.
On the subject of caravans, I have seen no sign of the humans. Perhaps the goblins attacked them on the way to Reveredtour.

With Rabid's untimely demise, all of his personal documents have been handed over to me. This has allowed me to learn more about the various devices he and the mechanics had designed. With this knowledge I may have found a way to strike back against the goblins.
The current flaw of Bunker Hill is that all of the catapults are placed directly at the edge of the river. This allows enemy archers to snipe any dwarf who attempts to operate them so long as they are also at the river's edge. However, we may be able to work around this. The catapults maximum range is far larger than I originally thought. With the goblins stationed so close to Bunker Hill, the catapults could be placed farther back and still be able to hit them. This means that we could build a catapult far enough from the river to avoid the archers, but close enough to still pelt them with rocks. In theory at least.
I'll not give up a potential way of striking back at the goblins. I have ordered a new catapult set up, hopefully out of range of the goblin archers.

It seems that in spite of the occupying goblin force and recent deaths, the fortress is in good spirits. Indeed I can't seem to find any particularly unhappy citizens and the number of complaints I've received lately have been very low. So maybe things aren't as bad as I think. I mean, it's hard to argue that everything is well when an angry goblin horde sits outside our home but at least everybody is happy. That counts for something, right?

Construction of the catapult is complete. It was built without any interruptions from goblin archers, so I believe it is safe to fire. Hopefully it shall be able to rain death upon the invaders and show them true dwarven pride!
...though with only two mechanics left this may take a while. Perhaps I should check to see if anyone else has any engineering skills.
20th Limestone, 1058, Early Autumn
Oh my.
That's a...that's a very big bug. I think this another one of those strange beasts, cause I've never heard of a bug with a trunk. I hope the Chambers of Alchemy have had time to gather all their gear, cause they're going to be fighting this thing along with the rest of our military.
The bug showed up in the crypt, so I assume it shall be heading for the farms. The military will fight against it there as we have done in the past.

Despite being perfectly capable of attacking Reveredtour at any given moment, this strange beast Lene has instead decided to simply lounge at the bottom of the lake. Though it is under several feet of murky water it's clicking is still clearly audible, much to the dismay of the farmers who already had to put up with the endless groans of zombies. I will keep the military stationed nearby incase Lene decides to attack, though at the moment it seems to have no intention of doing so.
1st Sandstone, 1058, Mid-Autumn
After over a week of no activity from Lene (other than obnoxious clicking), I have deemed him to be a nonthreat. While her certainly could become an issue, I cannot justify having the military stand guard by the lake for such a long period of time. They need to be preparing themselves to face such threats rather than waiting for them to actually show up.
8th Sandstone, 1058, Mid-Autumn
Damn those insufferable green skins! They have once again found a way to interfere with my plans! A squad led by that nasty archer has moved down the river towards the canal we dug to flood the moat. On first glance this does not seem like a problem, however the goblins are now positioned directly over an exposed tunnel we use to access Bunker Hill!
This area can be attacked by goblin archers from above. Civilians are now afraid to cross it for fear of being shot. There are two solutions to this dilemma; the first and most obvious one is to simply cover up the area that is exposed. However the presence of the goblin siege obviously prevents us from doing this. The second option would be to dig out a new tunnel even further below ground that leads to Bunker Hill. I see no issue with digging out this alternative path and will tell the diggers to do so immediately.
12th Sandstone, 1058, Mid-Autumn
Well the goblin occupation hasn't stifled creativity. The young child Frozen Flame has been struck by a fantastic idea and demands that she be given the materials to build it.
20th Sandstone, 1058, Mid-Autumn
A new chamber has been dug out beneath Bunker Hill. The catapults ammo supply, which was previously located above ground, will be relocated to this chamber. This is to help reduce the risk of workers being shot by archers on Bunker Hill. Now nobody should wander near the edge of the river unless they have received specific instructions to do so.
She has taken control of a vacant crafting workshop in order to build it. I wonder what manner of artifact she will create? Her mother Jessica is concerned by her strange behavior, but I assure her that everything is fine. I'm pretty sure we only have one of these strange moods end in violence once anyways. In addition, the new tunnel leading to Bunker Hill is now complete. The goblins can no longer prevent us from accessing it.
Now we merely wait until one of the mechanics works up the courage to operate the catapult.
In other news, Frozen Flame completed her artifact.
Turns out she was making an earing.
A painfully large one. At the very least it doesn't have any images of dwarves dying or copious amounts of spikes. Still, I think if you tried to wear this it would tear your ear off. Yuck. Still, Frozen Flame is quite pleased with it. I suppose that's all that really matters.
29th Sandstone, 1058, Mid-Autumn
Well, the catapult works properly. One of the mechanics finally got around to testing the damn thing. However, there is a problem I did not consider before.
Our mechanics cannot aim at all. As demonstrated by this diagram, a large chunk of microline was fired directly away from the goblins. Not only did this accomplish nothing but it alerted the goblins to our plan, prompting them to move even further away. Clearly the mechanics need more experience before they can make proper use of these catapults. At least now they can train in relative safety.

I have no idea why Lene decided to chill out in the lake rather than attack. This makes two forgotten beasts which have chosen to swim rather than fight. If I had to guess, it would be that water screws with forgotten beast pathing. In my last fort forgotten beasts would often hang out in the flooded tunnels doing nothing rather than attack. Perhaps being submerged screws with their AI and makes them think they are trapped. No idea if any of this is true though.
