Hooray, dorfin again. However:
1. I will not be updating as fast as Kyoufuu, or in one post like dantallion.
2. I can't really get onto this until tuesday. Normally I'd pass it on to whoever is next, but there doesn't seem to BE anyone yet, so I guess I'll just wait for now. Hope it doesn't put you guys too far out.
3. I will have my avatar working by then.

Degrees there is one guy after you, he doesn't have an escapist account, and outright refuses to make one, so he will be posting his stuff through me. Just thought I'd clear that up.

Well, I've done something a little different - just played through the whole year. In hindsight not a great idea, would have preferred to stagger it a bit, but I'm too busy; my only other option was to stagger it a LOT. So, instead, I've written up a brief skeleton of a journal with the game, which I'll post over the next two days.
Wanted to write one up today but I have been doing THIS all day, took longer than I wanted when I got a tantrum spiral after a poorly handled set of ambushes, and reloaded. So, anyway, stay tuned!

Here I go. Apoligies if this ends up double posting, it LOOKS like the board ate my last attempt.

Well, we've just arrived at Trademerged, myself and five other dwarves. Quite soon afterwards, a very angry looking soap maker called Ustuth came up to us and demanded we all start working on his "Toilet".
Never heard of a toilet before, but apparently it's a thing that drowns and flushes elves... or anything else that may turn up to our trade depot. For trading. It'll be a major pain if someone turns up and we want their stuff WITHOUT killing them, or if real invaders turn up and aren't interested in trading... although our main entrance is blanketed in traps to stop that. Armok help you if you forget where you're supposed to step in that hallway.

1st Granite, 128
Happy New Year! That is, except for me. By some crazy set of rules, the leader every year is elected from the latest wave of migrants, BY those migrants. Hooray.
In the six months of being here, one thing has become apparent: Ustuth hates Elves. Not in a Dwarvenly, "cursed-tree-hugging-cannibal-hippies!" kind of way, but a "lets paint the walls in elf blood and wear elf leather" kind of way. He also killed a bunch of Humans that turned up to trade. Never got round to using his Toilet thingie though, before handing the controls over to me (after a very bored speech haphazardly pointing at the levers that were supposed to work the thing, I stuck notes on them to point out which one did what. They SHOULD be in the right order...)
Anyway, after two years the fort falls to me, with a handful of terrible weapons, no armour, defences that will only work if attackers decide to walk into them, not enough beds, and eleven bars of iron. Last time I checked, you can't defend yourself with gold, so my first order as leader is to mine out the mountain's (sizeable!) supply of iron.

The miners started telling me something about the rock here being fine, but we can't lop heads with golden swords! Only iron, at the very least, will do.

4th Granite, 128
Everything has gone poorly.

While Melbil without warning emitted a wild scream, and everyone (including myself) tripping over everyone else to get out of the dining room, I realised we didn't have a working military. I put it on my list of priorities, right after not getting torn limb-from-limb by a crazy potash-maker.
Melbil started ripping some dogs apart with her bare hands, and every sane Dwarf got safely out of there - except for Ablel, who slept through the whole thing and woke up a little confused covered in dog's innards. Or maybe he just figured he could have taken care of it.
Right after high-tailing it, I ordered our (untrained) military to take her out.

Set up a hospital area real quick and sent Ral, one of my fellow immigrants to see if he could assess the damage. Asking around, it seemed like Melbil had been in some sort of strange mood, keeping to herself and muttering for things all the time. We'll never know what she wanted now...

6th Granite, 128
A goblin came in for a visit! It's visiting the inside of a cage now. What are we to do with it? We've actually got a few of the wretched things in cages at the moment ? maybe we could trade them for something!
Ral got back to me about the injuries; four in total, he'll still need to have a look at them though.

7th Granite, 128
More visitors!

They got distracted, though. It's a good thing that cat doesn't belong to anyone...

And then they charged straight into our cage traps. I'll never get over how well disguised those things are, everything just runs straight into them. We have QUITE a little collection of goblin prisoners now.

27th Granite, 128
The strip mining is going well!

However, Mosus Ostathtekkud, the original leader, pointed out with some disdain that most of the ENTIRE FORTRESS had been mined out of iron ores. -_-'
I never was much of a miner.

6th Slate, 128
I found out there was a massive party going on.

I hadn't been invited. So I turned up anyway, got up on a (the) table, and announced to everyone that I was looking for Dwarves with not much to do to volunteer for fleshing out our defensive army!
That cleared them out. Everyone LIKES hiding behind the cage traps.
It occurs to me that we DO need a military, and I haven't done very many big projects around the fortress, so I put together a little list of goals:
1. Establish a military - 12 Dwarves (20% of the adult population, in a staggered training regimen. The previous military had been set to constantly train in times of alert, which was never put in place)
2. Make smithing production line. (one smelter, one furnace and one forge? I don't think so, I'm here to make things OUT OF IRON)
3. Dig out bedrooms (REAL bedrooms)
4. Nobles rooms (I need an office to write real lists properly. I don't know why, I just KNOW)
5. Something to leave my mark on the fortress... that future leaders in their towers made of platinum and soap can look back on as a great, pivotal achievement. I'll start drawing up some designs...

12 Slate, 128
Migrants!

In other news, I've set up a military so they're spending half of their time training, a quarter standing guard near the entrance and another quarter on civilian duties. Hopefully by the time invaders arrive they'll be semi-competent.

19th Slate, 128
Goden Lorbamnish was taken by a mood!

He took a workshop with some gems and iron, and got to work. Inspired by his determination (i.e. praising or chanting in a language no-one can understand while dashing madly taking everyone's stuff with no explanation) I have ordered the Dwarves under my command to begin construction of my monument, out on the spacey crest of the hill we live on. No-one will forget me now!

25th Slate, 128
Hooray, this guy didn't die.

Yeah, I don't think a stone flute is gonna sound to good. Ah well.
Also here, you can see the barracks I'm digging out for the military ? need an archery range still. And beds, the now-sizeable fortress is sleeping mainly in the dining room, which doesn't even have enough room for everyone to EAT in, nevermind sleep.

15th Felsite, 128
An Elven caravan arrived! I'm surprised we're still on speaking terms, given how Ustuth treated them. Create an elf-killing army? Kind of tricky when no-one is training at any time. I think at this point it might be better to reconcile with these people, and instead focus our attention on the goblin hoard which is surely destined to come our way.
Ustuth's Toilet will stand unused during my tenure. Alright, now what should I sell them-

DROWN THE ELVES DROWN THEM ALL

Haha, now they're trapped! HOW MANY TREES CAN WE CUT DOWN, ELVES? WHAT'S THAT? CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER THE CRASHING SOUND OF YOUR IMPENDING DOOM!
The mechanism can do with some tweaking; it doesn't flood very quickly, and they can get out through the water channel to the river, if they could hold their breath well enough.

1st Hematite, 128
Summer has arrived! The elves are taking a long time to drown. A pump and cistern system will help, could provide irrigation for the fortress and other ways in which to drown those who would do us harm (if we keep drowning Elven traders there might be more very soon).

12th Hematite, 128
Finally.

And flush! The mechanism works as advertised, although could be improved.
We'd better clear away these corpses and stuff before someone figures it out...

16th Hematite, 128
Found a cavern! Looking for white stone for my monument, looks like there's some near the bottom ? with flux to boot! Steel, here we come!

I think we're a little under equipped if a spider decides to waltz up and greet us though. I'm sealing it off for now and mining around it. Good luck to any future leader who wants to try their luck...

2nd Malachite. 128
More migrants! Not as many as last time, though.

17th Galena, 128
Human Caravan! I think all the elf remains have been taken away, they should suspect nothing >_>. Gonna trade with them though, they tend not to be as finicky (and iron weapons hurt more than sissy wooden ones).
In the meantime, offices and bedrooms (REAL bedrooms) are being carved out, I've found my white stone, the military is being trained in proper barracks as we speak and weapons and armour are being produced. Things are looking up!

-----

Pro tip - don't do this if you're busy. I realised after yesterday that I wouldn't be able to do this again until NEXT tuesday, and I didn't want to hold you guys up too much. Didn't have as much fun as I would have, but I did get the itch to Dorf again, which is probably bad given I don't have the time.
Yeah, I started mining out magnetite before realising the fort is made of it, even though Kyoufuu explicitly mentioned it. Derp. Also didn't really get as much done as I would have expected to, but all those idlers freak me out and I can't always find jobs for them. Irks me to have that little number so high though.
More to come!

1st Limestone, 128

Autumn has arrived.

The trading with the Humans didn't go too badly; our meat stocks needed replenishing, which we sorted, and absolutely no-one was drowned!

2nd Sandstone, 128

More migrants, this puts Trademerged up to ninety eight occupants. A fine fort to be sure. This sort of workforce can really get things done, and although they are untrained any decent dwarf can turn their hand to any task. I've taken advantage of this by rounding up most with nothing to do and getting them to assist with my glorious monument, although they seem pretty bemused. They don't appreciate my genius?
It doesn't matter, it IS hard to make out from close up anyway ? truth be told, I've often been dismayed and worried that maybe I've done the wrong thing? A voice tells me that perseverance will pay off. We shall see.

15th Timber, 128

Well... this is bad.

Our military isn't ready to take on such a force (they've only recently started training with real weapons!) - we'll have to rely on our traps to see us through. I wonder how long we'll be able to do that.

24th Timber, 128

Everything has gone better than expected.

Their leader, atop a massive Elk Bird, lead the foray - straight into our line of traps. The charging goblins followed and most were nabbed, at which point I decided it prudent to take down the stragglers with the budding army.

Although we still weren't without casualties ourselves. A couple of Dwarves were lost, but a glorious sacrifice it was.

10th Obsidian, 128

We have another artefact by some form of possession.

The coffin, although hardly decorated, would make a fine addition to any Dwarf's possessions.

15th Obsidian, 128

My own monument is finished, and happy am I to see it in its full glory, although it's taken many months and not a little of the resources of the fort. With it done, I intend to turn what little time I have left to more useful efforts: the recent deaths in the military have caused some Dwarves to fit and rage, often destroying valuable goods. To sort this out, I intend to build a prison, with large, rehabilitative cells for Dwarven inmates and locations to store the cages of those more homicidal.

1st Granite, 129

My time is up. It's been a year of ups and downs, sometimes I wonder if the fort would have been better off without me, but when I look at my monument I know that it certainly wouldn't be the SAME without me. May it inspire those who come afterwards to bigger and better things!

Batôk, The Inquiry of Inconvenience

It HAS been fun, all things considered. I should have gone into a little more detail with the going ons of the fortress, and Kadol could have had a lot more personality, but I just didn't feel like I had time. I tried to let my work on the fortress speak for my efforts instead :D
Keen to see where this goes from here!
Yes, that mural was a real pain to draw, many down stairs were constructed and deconstructed that day.
The new fortress:

Well, this could have been cool, and i might have given it a shot.

Thank you and good night.

EDIT: To clarify, I did see your post in the ReveredTour thread and thought "Why Not"

I now know why not.

Just a thought, but to circumvent the dungeon master bug, once we get a Barron we mod out the exotic creature tag

I've been poking my friend with a pointy stick for a week now, I think he has the fort finished but he's dragging his feet giving up any of the stuff he's written.

From the Journal of Äs Erushcerol:

Public Record of Äs Erushcerol's Stewardship of Nishkar During the Year 129

1st Granite:
Before I begin my elightened wardship of this colony there
are a few things I'd like to address. The first sight that
greeted me upon arriving last fall was this ungodly mess.
Sadly, it is typical of the hideously unorganized nature of this place.

Then there is this disaster waiting to happen.
Take note: it is immediately adjacent to the sleeping quarters.

And then this...interesting construction.
From what I can gather, my predecessor had somewhat of a dislike for Elves. I can only assume that this is intended as some sort of an insult to them, their gods, or possibly the world at large.

Oddly, all this effort has gone into offensive gestures, but the death chamber itself is inefficiently designed.
It is far from the river and at a level with it, depending on water flow to fill it. It should be near the water and beneath it. Worse, it's emptied via hatch, meaning that the looted goods would all fall into the drainage chamber below, taking them even further from the stockpile than they already are. There are no instructions, and I don't dare tinker with the nearby levers, so I'll leave it be for now.

3nd Granite:
After taking stock of our situation, as mentioned above, I will prioritize the following:

1) Better defences! Currently we rely on a dozen or so cage traps backed up by a handful untrained and underequipped soldiers. The latter could easily be remedied if only we had...

2) Trade Goods! Currently, all that is for sale in this allegedly gold-rich site is thousands of rocks, piles of goblin castoffs, and nigh-valueless elven loot. Since the last contains cloth, I'll put our Clothesmaker to work on it. I, personally, will be making Gold crafts.

3) Cleanliness. The character of the people here is a mirror of the slovenly environment in which they live. Fine smoothed walls, paved streets, statues, and a refuse heap that is actually outdoors will do a great deal to make this place civilized.

14th Granite:
I have noticed that a major traffic route passes directly over our sole farm plot. A few strongly worded signs out to resolve this.

19th Granite:
I stand corrected. Our resident farmer has informed me that we do, in fact have a second plot outside. I have ordered that it be walled in order to remain unmolested by Goblins.

On the subject of Goblin molestation, I have also ordered the construction of a drawbridge so we will at least have something to close when invading hordes arrive.

24th Granite:
Good news! Eight more migrants have arrive, bringing our population to a hundred and six.

Oh, gods, no!
May Armok preserve us!

27th Granite:
The Titan is dead, smashed to death by Goden Lorbamnish and his deadly buckler but not before it claimed the life of one of our stonecrafters.

RIP Degel Olilerith 58-129

16th Slate:
Gold-smithing proceeds apace. This stack of goods ALONE is more than this site has exported in the previous three years of operation!
In addition, a fine new trade goods production and storage area has been finished. Now we'll finally get some proper caravans through!

2nd Felsite:
My improvements to workplace aesthetics have borne fruit! Our Jeweler has been so inspired by our surroundings as to begin work on something wonderful!

16th Felsite:
Oh, Armok, no!
We've got Goblin Swordsmen coming in from the south and Axe wielders from the East, all of them mounted. Time to close the drawbridge.

22nd Felsite:
Stalemate. The drawbridge is closed, the sacrificial animal outside is slain, and the Trolls I didn't know they had have nothing to do.
I will give credit where credit is due: my predecessors had an emergency plan in place which allowed the dozen or so dwarves gathering wood to retreat inside without a casualty among them.

With adversity comes ingenuity and my thoughts return to the deathtrap the Elf-hater left behind.

23rd Felsite:
NOOOO!!!!!
Why did you have to dig a big gaping hole in our defences!?

28th Felsite:
Horror and slaughter!
Trolls attack but are slain by our military. Doors and hurriedly placed and locked to hold off the goblin invaders. One Troll remains to bash them down while we rush up walls to hold him off. What happens here decides whether Trademerged lives or dies.

On a lighter note, the moody jeweler finally got the bone he was waiting for.

And now I must seal this scroll away. Should we fall, those who come after must have a record of what happened here.

Wow. It sure would be ironic if the fort died immediately after resuming.
