This is it.
We played cricket in the hanger, what else could we do? Chances are, we could all be dead tomorrow. The weight of the world hangs on our shoulders; there was so much I wanted to do before this, so much left unfinished, I never realised that I would probably die on another planet, yet I must continue, should we fail, it's all over, humanity is over.

So, no pressure or anything.

Oh, and before I forget, Sergeant Root, that was never LBW.

Holy crap, for a Rookie, Ace has got some damn good stats

30th spin of the sun, seventh turn of the calendar.
Fury, Capslock Fury.

I called my family today. Did you know the first thing my mum said to me? ?When are we having you around for diner? I feel like I never see you anymore.? I almost cried, because I couldn?t bring myself to tell her that I may never be around for diner again.

But I talked to my family; I even patched a call through to my Dad, I?m pretty sure he was drunk. Then again he was always drunk. It sounded like he was at the casino too; isn?t it funny, the more things change the more they stay the same.

Combine patted me on the shoulder as he walked past me in the hallway today, the poor guy looked like he had a lot on his mind. I advised him to go listen to the good word of Preacher Saul. It always helps me.

A bunch of the team where playing cricket in the hanger, it appears Dekkarx had organized the game. I couldn?t help but join in; something so simple and close to home was a wonderfully calming experience, even more so then the good word of the Lord can be at times. ? Although it was irritating trying to explain how to play it to some of the American squaddies ? But that doesn?t mean I am relinquishing my self from prayer; every night since we learned of this fateful incursion I have spent an hour in silent prayer to the Lord.

I have also chained a miniature bible around my neck; although I?m sure I paid an extortionary price for it. (Is that even a word? It should be.) As I know that there are only three things that will guarantee the success of this operation. The skills of the squad; After all we are the best of the best. The leadership of our commanders; They have served us fantastically up until now. And the good hand of the Lord, our father in heaven. He will see us through this mission and home alive, because he wants these xeno?s to burn. And so burn they will.

?Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the lord,
He has trampled out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.?

I wonder if I can get one of the mechanics or R and D guys to engrave that onto my rifle?

The fury of CAPS; over, and out.

Captain Dalton "Doomsly" McSlaughter

Tomorrow is going to be a damn scary day, and I'm happy as Hell about it. Those Xenos bastards have terrorized our kin for far too long. It's about time we make them pay for it.

Some of the other men are all grim and serious about it. Well, I know we're not gonna lose this one. We represent good, justice, and the Lord Himself. We will deliver divine vengeance unto the otherworldly demons. Not to mention that as long as I have a gun in my hand, every alien in sight is gonna die. Heck, even without a gun I plan on taking out a few. I have more than one score to settle.

I've never been one for the whole leadership thing, but I reckon I ought to give the boys a bit of a pep talk before we fly away into the unknown. Dunno what the Commander has planned, but if it's more of this grim 'Your lives may be over' shit, then I'll have to make sure I get my own personal message around:

Double points for headshots, top score gets a free night at the bar, and a box of Cubans, on me.

Top score next to mine, that is.

//Audio Log of Subject "Longshot"
July 30, 1999
--------------

My son... If you listen to this it means I'm dead
*subject dissolves into hysteric laughter*
Oh man, always wanted to do that...

...

This it possibly the last time I make a log... We are headed for Cydonia soon, on what will be our single most important mission in this war. Noone will be prepared - we have no idea what horrors will await us at that base. There is no way our human minds can envision what sort of alien sights we will have to endure. We will be in the lion's den.

Spirits are mixed... Some seem fearful, or anxious. Others seem to look forward to it. Myself, I have fallen back on my usual merc rutine of switching off any major emotions. No, that's a lie... This is not Cambodja, Afghanistan, Ireland or Balkan. This is fricking Mars... Fighting fricking Aliens. This is personal. This is the unknown. This is paying me way too little.

Followed some of the other's example, and made my last will. Looking back, not that many to leave my stuff to... For the lack of any better candidates, I'm leaving it up to Dixon "Daredevil" Johnson, a blood-forged friendship from back in Balkan that I've had regular contact with, to try and locate my parents, and make sure they get 70 %. Rest, plus weapons stashes, contacts, whatever goes to Dixon.

Joined the boys in a game of cricket... If nothing else, it'll help us all in keeping our mnds of the pressure... This time, the fate of humanity rests in our grimy palms... Every plasma bolt, is a plasma bolt for liberation. We are no longer men. We are weapons of destruction, righteous fury, if you will excuse me soundin' like Saul, levelled at the enemy that seeks to enslave and extinct us.

To paraphrase Oppenheimer... We are become Death, the destroyer of worlds.
Or perhaps Bainbridge had it more right... Now we are all sons of bitches.

Journal Entry, 30th July, 1999
Sgt. Simon "Higurashi" Nilsson, X-Com Alpha-Squad
---

Finally we are about to assault these invaders on their own ground. I don't have much time at all to write anything here, as I intend to spend as much time as I can with my beloved. And I have to talk to some of the men, too. I think Comby wanted to see me later. There was no new info about the aliens I had not procured before this, so I have a couple of hours left. It feels all too little though.

I know we humans are violent beings as well, and perhaps we would react with hostility if we met upon an alien race too... but these things seem engineered for warfare and nothing else. I truly and deeply hope this is not the case. I truly hope they have a constructive life somewhere in the galaxy, and that we will meet upon other species that know of peace.

Many of the men have their own ideals they fight for. Some for freedom, some for their country, some for our planet, and some for God. I will, and have always, fought for love.

When I step unto those plains of Mars, I will not honour what it is named after. If I step unto the floors of their base, spite will not cloud my mind. And when I smite the invaders, these wielders of so much destruction and usurpation, I will not keep hatred in my heart. No, I will keep therein all I hold sacred and everyone I love. I will return their attacks with the limitless power of my heart, and if they give me no choice, I will destroy them by the sacred and endless power of the love I keep within. All in the name of allowing it to prosper further in a world without violence. Perhaps we humans will learn a great lesson from this war, and perhaps this dream will come true yet.

"And now these three remain: faith, hope and love.
But the greatest of these is love."

Cydonia Landing

As the Avenger dropped out of the short range hyperpace jump between Earth and Mars, Ninjablu began scanning the co-ordinates extracted from the alien commander on the Cydonia plain for a possible landing site. Choosing one on the edge of a cluster of regular pyramids, he made mankind's first touchdown on the surface of another world.

With no time to spare before the aliens realised what was happening and counterattacked, AceDiamond guided the hovertank out of the Avenger's ramp. As he turned the vehicle to sweep the local area he spotted incoming Cyberdiscs, the counterattack was already on.

It's actuators well insulated from the Martian cold, the ANTX81 unit was the first to move out of the Skyranger and begin the assault. It lined up it's heavy plasma weapon and blasted the cyberdisc, the alien weapon's self destruct fired, and blasted a new crater in the martian dust.

From the cloud of dust and smoke, answering shots lanced towards the Avenger, they were well off target however, and AceDiamond moved the hovertank out further to locate the attacker. Another Cyberdisc.

The ANTX81 unit was already in position to fire, and the aliens' war machine was no match for the pride of X-Com's robotics division.

The rest of the team followed out of the landing craft in waves. The first wave dispersed flares to aid the team dealing with the weak sunlight. As one of his flares landed, Higurashi spotted the next alien inside one of the pyramids. Evidently these structures were watchtowers for the base below.

He signalled the alien's position to the squad, and Vanilla Gorilla was able to get an angle to shoot the alien.

As he advanced to the south, Jack Lavish encountered another sectoid, out in the open this time.

It ducked into the crater as he fired, and his shots went over it's head, but Combined II was able to get in position to shoot as well, and he was able to kill the creature.

Another moved up to support it, it attempted to get into the cover of the same crater, but once again Combined II denied it respite.

As the flying suited members of the squad disembarked, Bling Cat II spotted another alien in a watchtower close to the squad.

She had no angle to shoot, but Birras was able to, having foregone a Blaster Launcher in favour of a Heavy Plasma for this final assault.

Jack Lavish began advancing southward again, and soon spotted yet another alien in the cratered plain south of the LZ.

Once again it sought shelter in the crater, but CAPSLOCK FURY was well positioned to shoot, and it's attempts to hide were in vain.

Doomsly McSlaughter moved at this point into one of the alien watchtowers, to gain a vantage over the battlefield. Checking southwards once again, he identified another target.

This one could not hide from Jack Lavish, and he blasted it back into the cratered dust.

From the darkness close to the southwestern pyramids, plasma shots rang out, and one splashed against the front of Jack Lavishes power suit. Fortunately, the suit's pressure seal held and Lavish was uninjured.

Combined II moved up to locate the firer.

And was able to terminate it.

The squad advancing to the northeast had yet faced little resistance, that looked set to change as Higurashi spotted an alien moving out of a pyramid.

However, he also spotted another entrance into the structure, and used it to creep up behind the alien and kill it before it could engage the squad.

With their backs thus covered, the squad began moving southeast. The sensors of the ANTX81 located another alien in the open.

Targetting information on the squad's HUDs allowed Schizzy to bring his weapon to bear from one of the alien watchtowers, and the creature never knew what had killed it.

Combined II and Jack Lavish completed their sweep of the southwestern sector, finding one last alien cowering in a pyramid.

Combined II entered the structure and blasted the alien.

X-Com held the surface. The team would now proceed into the heart of the alien base.

Camera shows the interior of a ship; the reception is slightly fuzzy. Inside the ship sits a squad of heavily armed, heavily armored soldiers. By the door way to the exit ramp idles the hulk of the hover tank. Just behind the tank stands a soldier; easily identifiable as an officer due to the markings on his shoulder pads.

As the camera focuses in an out on him a low chanting can be heard in the back ground. "My father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours; now and forever. Amen."

The officer raises his gloved hand to show five fingers; four, three, two, one. A light at the door way of the exit ramp goes green and slowly the ramp descends, collapsing to the red sand beyond the ships exterior. A swirl of the red dust is kicked up by the intruding metal ramp.

As if on a rehearsed que the hovertank purposefully descends the ramp. "And so it begins." Says someone of to the live feeds right.

A soldier runs ahead of the camera, gun aimed of towards some dunes to the south west. Several shadows flit about the dunes trying to cover up their diminutive forms. Even as the camera watches one of the creatures collapses on the ground; only to be promptly followed by the second.

The solider ahead of the camera drops to his knees and waves his hand across the front of his gun. "I can't get a shot."

The camera pans back to the dune where the last sectoid emerges from its cover. The camera man raises his rifle and loosens a shot. The sectoid collapses against its fallen brethren.

Several soldiers are standing near a pyramid like structure, guns trained into the door way. In the background the hover tanks idles away. A purple glow can be seen emitting from inside the few pyramids that the soldiers are now clustered around.

The commander from the ships interior cuts across the cameras vision. "We hold the surface; get ready every one, we're going in."

The Final Assault

After the main elevator into the facility, the entrance had split into two. The team broke up into two assault elements to hit both entrances simultaneously.

Both squads went in hard and fast, securing their intial entry points to prevent the surface being cut off. At the southern entrance, a chittering shrieking Chryssalid rushed at the squad.

Armitage Shanks was on point, and blasted the creature before it could get in among the men.

To the west of that position, Vanilla Gorilla spotted an Ethereal approaching with a Blaster Launcher.

One shot from that could have annihilated the entire southern attack, but Vanilla Gorilla ensured that shot never came.

Light glinting from a hideous carapace to the east revealed another Chryssalid, trying to sneak up on Dekkarax.

Once spotted, the creature was easy prey for Dekkarax' plasma bolts.

Armitage Shanks began to advance southwards into the large store room next to the entrance. He quickly spotted a Celatid floating among the containers.

And something much more worrying to the north, a heavily armoured war machine, with high calibre weaponry.

With no information on the capability of this machine, but no time to take chances with it, Shanks called for heavy fire support. Valiance programmed in the flight path to take a blaster bomb to the alien war machine, and let the missile fly.

The missile struck home, and the heavy armour of the alien device buckled and ruptured, it collapsed in a smoking heap.

Meanwhile, to the northeast, AceDiamond had spotted another Celatid on the hovertank's camera. He opened fire on it, but the creature floated away from the plasma bolts.

And RootOfAllEvil encountered another Chryssalid in the darkness of the central caves. He opened up with the heavy plasma, and the monster was blasted off it's feet.

The explosion of the blaster bomb having cleared, Jack Lavish moved up to support Armitage Shanks, he sighted on the Celatid still moving in the storage facility, and blasted it out of the air.

Whilst the one engaged by AceDiamond's hovertank had finally run out of luck, and took a plasma bolt right through it's body.

No sooner had that fallen, than RootOfAllEvil came under attack from a Silacoid in the caves, attracted by the heavy alloys in his power suit, it began attempting to digest his leg. He shook it off and blasted it before it could break the suit's pressure seal.

Behind him, the first Chryssalid the squad had encountered had staggered to it's feet and attempted to lumber after Vanilla Gorilla. It was obviously not quite dead. As the monstrous alien bore down on him, Vanilla Gorilla managed to bring his heavy plasma up and incinerate it's head, putting it on the floor for good.

Taking no chances with the remaining two corpses, Cyberoth II set a blaster bomb off to vapourise them. This flushed out another Celatid and Silacoid, which both scattered into the corridor in front of Higurashi.

He opened up on full auto, and first one, then the other fell to the searing bolts of plasma.

The base facility was clear now, except for one room on the upper level. This must be the command centre, the heart of this invasion. Commander Birras was first up the lift, and was greeted by an honour guard of four ethereals.

One was blocking the other lift, so the Commander fired on that first, ignoring it's attempt to fire back, he blasted it to the floor, and destroyed one of the aliens's psionic projectors behind it. The psychic backlash killed another ethereal standing too close.

With the second lift clear, Schizzy entered and opened fire on the second two guards, felling one, then the other in turn, and was followed in by Cyberoth II.

As soon as the last guard died, a voice boomed out of the giant computer system at the far end of the room, it spoke an amalgam of human languages, intelligible to everyone in the room.

The voice made promises and threats, it spoke in half truths and outright lies.

Commander Birras' reply was not directed at the alien computer, but at Cyberoth II. "Blow that fucker up son."

Cyberoth shouldered his Blaster Launcher one last time.

The alien computer had time for one plaintive scream of frustrated rage as the guided missile shrieked towards it's target.

Mankind would be slave to none whilst X-Com survived.
