This a great read by the way.

Awww. No more posts? This is awesome. I would love to enlist so I can help defend humanity against the would be alien overlords.
Not quite sure if Gunslinger makes a good name though. But as it's what I use I guess that's what it will be. Leave out the teh, as it is very lame, if and when you accept my application General.

Edit: my old nick from the Quake days: Jack Lavish. (Don't ask. I can't remember why I used that.)
Edit 2: I'll go general assault if it's okay.

I like this. Would it be too much trouble if I'd ask you to use the name Combined? If you would kindly allow me to join, of course.

Haha, Captain Birras, I like the sound of that. Wait...did I even do anything in this last battle?

Nah, you kind of wandered around, but the game doesn't care, you were the most experienced Sergeant when it decided we needed a Captain. (The rank distribution depends on the number of soldiers in total, right now we have 14, but I'll be adding some more so we have a permanent defence staff and I can rotate the field team, and always have some disposable newbies brave strike teams to hand).

I can has Scout? Seriously, this is a great read, and if there was a scout named Bling Cat it would be even better.

X-Com Daily Report, General McSwine

It appears that the initial projections for the X-Com budget requirement were hopelessly optimistic. In order to remedy the situation I have left standing orders with the Quartermaster to sell any surplus alien small arms and other personal equipment to interested nations. They fetch a good price, and we're going to need the income. I may have to look at tasking our engineering division to spend their idle time producing something to make us a bit on the side as well.

The income from this has allowed me to bring our science team up to a strength of 50 and double the size of our engineering staff.

Losses and recruitment among combat personnel have brought some changes to our order of battle, and I'm starting to familiarise myself with the men and women on the base as well.

CAPSLOCK FURY has moved from a scouting role to mainline combat, to be replaced with one of the new recruits*, Combined fills the gap in our heavy weapons crew, and Jack Lavish and Dekkarax complete the frontline roster, with Gamebrain89 and Looney providing sniper cover.

A few days after our last encounter, our brig facility was completed.

This brings us the opportunity to take prisoners of war from the aliens' ranks, which may give us access to their technology and an insight on their plans.

The scaled up versions of our laser pistols are ready for production as well.

The laser rifle offers a significant firepower increase over the standard X-Com rifle, with only a slight dip in accuracy. This should give us sufficient firepower to compete with the alien menace.

I order the new rifle into production. The power cell for this will need some of the Elerium we've siezed from downed UFOs. We're lucky to have this resource.**

Science team also think they can scale the laser weapon up even further, I tell them they're welcome to try.

We get a few days of peace and quiet after the excitement of the latest breakthrough, and then we're back in action as another grounded UFO is detected in Eastern Europe.

X-Com Incident Report, 24th January

Another UFO reported to us by overflying radar birds, I don't know how they're slipping under our radar installation, but it's clear we need to improve detection capability.

The Skyranger is launched to welcome our guests to Earth. Toting new weapons and increasing confidence in their abilities, X-Com returns to battle.

* OOC Note: The newbie has higher reactions, which is my key stat for determining a scout, it means they're less likely to provoke reaction fire.

** OOC Note: Really, spectacularly lucky. We've had two intact power cores in the first month, three after this mission hopefully. It's quite possible to have no Elerium at all at this point, and the modified lasers require it to build anything bigger than a pistol.

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine, X-Com

Day 24: Improvement.

Another night fight for X-Com, but experience of the dangers of this kind of operation means the troops are less jumpy, less likely to go off half cocked. Fortunately, we've been running tactical simulations and we think we have an idea how to hit them now. Additionally, we've been able to deploy laser rifles to our soldiers now, though snipers Looney and Gamebrain89 are staying with the more accurate Rifle for now.

----

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 2

Once again, the Skyranger is able to put down right next to the UFO. It's immediately evident that it's another of the cross shaped ones.

A welcome break from the norm on this mission, AceDiamond rolls down the Skyranger's ramp into clear air, no reaction fire greets us as we debark. As per SOP for night operations we deploy electroflares around the LZ, and Bling Cat catches sight of the first alien.

Higurashi and CAPSLOCK FURY open fire with their brand new laser rifles, CAPSLOCK FURY scores the kill shot.

As the rest of the squad debarks, a flash of movement is spotted near where the first alien fell. Bling Cat advances cautiously under the shadow of the Skyranger and spots a second alien, which has rushed over to the corpse of the first.

Higurashi takes careful aim and flash fries it.

A cautious advance is made around the flanks of the UFO. After a short while the sound of a wooden door opening and closing is heard in the distance. Whilst the possibility can't be discounted that it's a local coming to investigate the noise and shooting, the squad becomes tense and alert. After a short time, their tension is justified as the UCV comes under fire from a farmhouse on the eastern side of the LZ. AceDiamond and Birras return fire, but the alien survives. Not so the farmhouse wall.

AceDiamond sends another rocket into the farmhouse, claiming the Alien's life and that of the opposite wall.

Meanwhile, investigating movement near the farmhouse door reveals yet another alien

Gamebrain89 lines up a shot and hits, but the alien doesn't go down. Birras is less cautious, spraying Auto-cannon fire in it's direction and eventually scoring a hit that puts the alien down.

Sweeping the rest of the LZ reveals no further alien activity outside the UFO, and the team makes ready to assault it.

Learning from the last assault, it is decided that the UFO will be breached in two places, both the entryway wall and the wall of the bridge, allowing a two pronged assault on the aliens and the element of surprise. The walls are breached, and grenades are thrown through the breaches to flush out defenders.

This proves more successful than anticipated, as the grenades kill the only aliens inside, this crew not having made a last stand in the engineering room.

Report Ends

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

It appears we've gotten lucky again, the lack of concerted defence inside the UFO may have saved us some casualties this time. It would have been nice to recover some prisoners for questioning, but I'll happily trade that for a mission with no losses.

aw darn, I didn't kill him. I think I will pick this up, seeing as the entire X-Com pack is only 5 bucks right now. Keep it coming man, this is entertaining.

Excerpt Personal Log, General McSwine, X-Com

Day 26: Escalation

It appears that X-Com's activities have been noticed by our adversary. They have chosen to respond by striking directly at civilian targets in heavily populated areas. This is, quite understandably, a nightmare scenario for X-Com. We cannot use excessive force in these areas as it would endanger the civilian population, but our enemy has no such limitation.

Nevertheless, our responsibility is to respond and protect what lives we can.

----

X-Com Battle Report, Terror Mission 1

The Skyranger arrives and sets down in a clear area on the western edge of the deployment zone in the suburbs of Tokyo.

AceDiamond deploys the UCV and spots an unfamiliar alien, these new aliens appear to be completely unrelated to the Sectoids we have encountered so far, but their goals and methods of operation appear the same..

Since the background is clear, AceDiamond fires a rocket and takes the alien down.

As the rest of the squad deploys, Bling Cat spots an alien in an alley to the east of the Skyranger, he fires but does not hit the target.

Dekkarax has more luck and the alien goes down.

AceDiamond advances the UCV to the main street through the area, he spots another alien, and Combined and Looney fire on it but score no hits. Gamebrain89 manages to tag it though and scores the kill.

The screams of civilians panicking and dying assault the squad, and Bling Cat gets a glimpse of an alien much larger than we've ever seen before in an alley to the south, but loses sight of it again. On the north side of the street an alien manages to blow itself up with an ill-thrown grenade.

Bling Cat finds the large alien again, but cannot hit it from where he is.

He and CAPSLOCK FURY take cover in a nearby building and fire out until the alien is dead.

AceDiamond spots another of the large aliens in an alley to the north, and kills it with a rocket.

Whilst advancing down the middle of the street, the UCV comes under heavy fire from an alien hidden by smoke to the north.

The alien is sighted, and long range sniper fire from Looney ends it's threat.

The advance down main street continues, another large alien is spotted at the edge of the mission area, and Combined and a scout engage it with sustained fire, finally killing it in a hail of heavy cannon and laser fire.

Meanwhile, the UCV is fired on again from the south, but ineffectually this time. AceDiamond responds with a rocket, felling another alien and another of the large aliens behind it.

All at once, Birras and Deccarax come under fire from an alien rounding the corner of the building they are flanking, but they are not hit, and return fire and kill the shooter, and CAPSLOCK FURY is surprised by one of the large aliens rounding a corner, but is able to retain his compusure and fill it with laser.

Whilst sweeping the buildings to the north of the LZ, Jack Lavish finds himself face to face with an alien at point blank range. Before it can react he riddles it with automatic laser fire.

As they complete their sweep of the warehouse, Bling Cat and CAPSLOCK FURY find yet another of the large aliens, and CAPSLOCK FURY gets another notch on his laser rifle*.

At this, the aliens pull out, and we are left to count the dead.

Report Ends

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

The first strike of alien forces on civilian populations has gone about as well for X-Com as could have been hoped. Some civilian casualties were unavoidable, but the attack was repulsed before they could climb too high.

----

* OOC Note: CAPSLOCK FURY went on a rampage this mission, but every single reaper he downed was actually unconscious not dead, so they've not been counted as kills by the game, and we have an alien containment unit all stunk up by Reapers.)
