Higs took one hell of a hit during the assault and is going to be out for a while. Although it sucks for him and for squad morale, it's better for him to be alive and burned than dead and buried like Combined. He finally was up and complaining a bit at the tail end of the day in the ICU, so I went and talked to him. I know there isn't much I can do other than offer a bit of moral support, but I figure it's better than hiding out in my control center all day. I saw what was left of his suit when they got it off him, the fact he's still alive is a testament to his will.

Speaking of the tanks, the boys in R&D are constructing a new prototype hovertank for us, and I have to say I'm really excited about that prospect. Granted I'm losing the rocket launcher in the process but the laser cannon is a nice, powerful, and precise substitute. Plus it moves faster, which is always good.

Sgt. Higs got hit this time. Got plasma all over his gut. But the tough bastard survived. He'd have made an excellent Vympel operative.

Visited the man, or tried to. Ended up waiting with the rest outside the OT. When the doc said it'd take 2 months to heal, I thanked God that my own burn experience was so much milder in comparison.

Saw design papers for a new "Firestorm". Disappointed that it isn't a transport. I suppose the only consolation is that Ninjablu will likely bring down more of those alien ships, and consequently, more action.

I'm still pissed. Combine and Higgs taking hits, they shouldn't be running frontline. Wait until I find one of these bastards and their grenades are getting rammed right up their alien asses.

X-Com Incident Report, 29th May

It started, appropriately, at midnight. Another scout was picked up on an infiltration mission in North America.

As the scramble alarm sounded however, another ship, more commonly associated with terror strikes, was detected on the same mission profile.

Then as the interceptors were in the air, yet another, a supply ship.

We maintained tracking on all three vessels, it is clear now that they are concentrating efforts on the United States.

Mere hours had passed before the magnitude of the disaster was made clear.

Two alien battleships. Way beyond the capability of X-Com to intercept. There is no question that this marks full diplomatic contact between the alien leadership and the United States Government, underlined by a show of force that they know X-Com cannot intercept.

With no way to challenge these vessels in the air, they made landfall in and around major cities in the United States and her neighbours.

Transcript of briefing to X-Com Personnel, General McSwine

Ladies and Gentlemen. As I am sure you are aware, our alien foe has once again escalated this war. They are making the attempt to suborn the government of the United States, providing supplies of their advanced technology to the government, holding a parade of their military units brought in by terror ship, and landing diplomats in battleships to sign a non-aggression pact with the government.

If we had five times the men and materiel we would still not have been able to stop this, but we can give these aliens a bloody nose for coming, and by god we will. What that means is that we will be assaulting one of the aliens' battleships directly whilst it is landed, we will show them that no matter how many troops they bring, and how large and dangerous they can build their ships, we will be there to kill them on the ground.

We will show them that X-Com can not be intimidated, we will not be cowed by a show of force, we will stand up to them and we will fight, whenever, wherever, and however they come.

Their timing was impeccable. Our new interceptors weren't ready for battle and our manpower took a series of hits.

And now they have taken my country hostage. Not only that but the country that just happens to be our biggest supporter in funding. Personally I wish we had gunned down one of the smaller vessels just to dissuade them a bit but beggars can't be choosers. We're going after one of their battleships while it's grounded. We're going to kill every single alien ************ in that place, and then? Well I just hope those idiots stay on the ground long enough for us to do it again until there are none of them left.

They may be able to subvert the USA, but they won't subvert this American. Even if every country on Earth falls to them I will fight them to my last breath. I know that's really silly to say when I don't even go to the front, but who can say what I will and won't do when pushed. This isn't just about the USA, this is about everyone; the aliens just decided to make it more personal.

My only hope is that Mongoose-1 holds together until the end of this crisis, no matter the outcome. I just want to feel like I did the best I could.

(OOC: Having never had an infiltration mission but having attacked a landed battleship before, I can say we are in for one hell of a fight, mostly because of the corridor layout of the ship and the central grav lift being a huge ambush point)

oh dear. Should we check the states for bases? I'd imagine the aliens would set one up there, to make sure America doesn't try to help us.

The Buggers! Lord Almighty, I needs me a drink.
*short pause*

They lands us down a battleship! Two o' the blighters! Even our big cheese admitted there be no way in 'ell we can fight both of 'em.
So we says "we'll fight one and leaves the other alone."
But I still gets me same old job- sit in this plane and hold very still. Hopefully they'll be doing most a tha fighin' inside that big ship.
This'll be pretty harsh.

Well those freaking aliens are cheeky little buggers. Landing right in the USA, like they own the place. which they kind of do now that they have two battleships on the ground, taking over the country. The General was right in holding back, there was nothing to be gained by sacrificing pilots against those monsters. But we are going to make this move cost them. Got the word we are going to take on one of the battleships on the ground. This Op is probably going to get bloody. I know we should hope that everyone makes it back alive, but thats not realistic. This is war, and people do die and have died. But we are going to drive these alien freaks back to the hell hole from whence they came. Combined would want that.

Sometimes I get to thinking that these guys have read as much of "The Prince" as I have.

Why decimate when you can bring them to you first?

I've half a bottle of whiskey left to tell me the answer, then in the morning I'm walking right up to the White House and shredding any alien diplomat I see. And if those alien-lovers get in my way, then that's their problem.

Two battleships, a terror ship, a supply ship and a scout. Almost like an naval flotilla reminiscent of World War 2. It's no longer an invasion. It's a war. A war that the rest of the world isn't even aware they're involved in.

It's time to invade America and teach those those cowboys how Russians kick alien ass. With a bottle of vodka in one hand and a plasma gun in the other.

I think I'll see if Sgt Root wants to share some true Russian vodka before we head out.

This may be the mission that breaks me. This is a damn battleship. I need in on this. I'm going to go talk to Saul later, try to collect myself in preparation for the worst, being left behind, but after that I'm going to be praying for a chance to defend my planet from the alien scum. They think they can just float on down here and tell us to lie down. Well, this old dog only knows one trick; Sick 'em.

Arf arf, bitches.

X-Com Battle Report, UFO Ground Assault 7

The new hovertanks still hadn't arrived when the skyranger set off, so AceDiamond is still controlling the old rocket tank for it's final mission. The team touched down at night on the outskirts of Montreal, and AceDiamond rolled out. No fire immediately greeted him, so the squad followed, dispersing flares as they did so.

Though they didn't see any aliens in the darkness, they were evidently spotted, and a grenade sailed in from the northwest and exploded at Vanilla Gorilla's feet. Vanilla Gorilla was seriously wounded but stable, CAPSLOCK FURY was left bleeding from shrapnel wounds, and ANTX81 suffered subprocessor core damage. Preacher Saul, despite standing right next to Vanilla Gorilla, was uninjured.

Another soldier rushed over to CAPSLOCK FURY and stabilised him with a medikit, and the rest of the squad pronounced themselves fit to continue. The squad fanned out to the northwest and spotted the grenade thrower.

[

Keeping a steady aim through the severe pain, Vanilla Gorilla taught the alien some manners.

Movement in the darkness alerted the squad to a second alien near the last, and ANTX81 moved to confirm it's location. This alien was carrying an immense gun.

Fortunately, it did not get a chance to fire, and CAPSLOCK FURY splashed it with plasma fire.

As the squad advanced further, they spotted possibly the strangest alien yet, what appeared to all intents and purposes to be a rock, but it was moving slowly, and leaving a trail of burned vegetation and brushfires behind, indicating extreme heat.

CAPSLOCK FURY and another soldier with him opened fire, but the thing proved to be as tough as a rock, absorbing four heavy plasma hits without stopping. AceDiamond centred the thing in his crosshair, however, and a rocket blasted it into fragments.

The LZ appeared to be clear at this point, so the team made plans to enter the UFO. As they did, however, the aliens mounted a counterattack from the entry port in the centre of the UFO. One exited the east door and took a stun bomb from Preacher Saul to the south, and retreated inside, the southern door opened and either the same alien or another exited and threw a grenade at Preacher Saul's feet. Doomsly McSlaughter blasted it with a rocket but it shrugged it off.

The grenade exploded, and once again the Lord's protecting hand shielded his servant, Preacher Saul emerged from the blast unscathed and charged the UFO door.

Meanwhile, Doomsly Mcslaughter loaded up another rocket and blasted the alien next to the southern door again. The rocket exploded against the UFO wall, but the alien went down, knocked out by the concussion of the blast.

Preacher Saul had found himself staring at another alien inside, the one to the south wasn't the one he had spotted before, he ducked back out of the door and called for backup and Vanilla Gorilla and Armitage Shanks peppered the inside of the elevator with plasma fire. The alien didn't go down until ANTX81 arrived and blasted it with another stun bomb however.

Following up the counterattack another alien appeared with one of the larger weapons.

Again it fortunately didn't get to fire, and Armitage Shanks lined up and blasted it.

With the counterattack contained, the team could make ready to enter. It was decided to breach into the UFO at the northern and southern landing pods whilst a team followed AceDiamond's UCV into the main entry port.

None of the three teams met resistance on entry, but Vanilla Gorilla spotted an alien on the top floor of the UFO up the elevator shaft.

He fired from below and the alien was killed.

The team began to explore the first floor of the UFO, RootOfAllEvil entered a side door and came face to face with an alien in a small antechamber.

With no backup, he opened fire himself and the alien went down.

Meanwhile Armitage Shanks, Doomsly McSlaughter, and Vanilla Gorilla proceeded to the second floor. As they readied themselves at the top of the elevator an alien burst in through the western door, Armitage Shanks shot it twice point blank and it retreated again.

Doomsly Mcslaughter was first out of the central shaft, coming face to face with an alien at the door.

Too close to use his rocket launcher, he drew his laser pistol and drilled hole after hole into the tough Muton skin, until the creature blacked out from the pain.

Whilst Armitage Shanks followed the alien out of the western door, he caught up with it and finished it off.

Outside the eastern door, Vanilla Gorilla heard shots slam into the wall behind him, another alien was sneaking up to flank the team.

He rounded the corner and blasted it at close range.

The team on the top floor spread out, and this allowed an alien to sneak past them to try and ambush the team on the first floor. CAPSLOCK FURY spotted it but could not get an angle to kill it.

Birras and AceDiamond, however, were able to volley rockets up the elevator shaft and blow the thing away.

The team cautiously explored the rest of the alien vessel until Armitage Shanks found one last alien cowering in a corner.

Showing no mercy, the beast was terminated.

Mission Debriefing, General McSwine

The aliens prepared a warm welcome for us this time, and put two more of us in sickbay, and necessitated repairs on the ANTX81 unit that will take it offline for a month.

But we've shown them that the biggest ships they have aren't immune to assault. We can take them and we will wherever we get the chance.

There are still two alien vessels in place in US cities, and another which was shot down by interceptor fire. When the Skyranger is refuelled we will be seeking an opportunity to assault these remaining vessels.

Our work is not yet done people.

Damn I needed that. There's been too much waiting around recently and look where it's got us. Three men in the hospital and one in the ground.

We may not be able to take them in the air, but I've got a Heavy Plasma that just keeps racking up the notches. Hiding in alien broom cupboards won't do you any good.

Fury, Capslock Fury.
twenty ninth spin of the sun, fifth turn of the calendar.

I was never a religious man. I never believe in higher powers, never really had a reason too. But after what I saw today; no not saw, felt. After today in general I can't not believe anymore.

That grenade exploded by my feet. By all reason I should no longer be able to walk. Hell, I shouldn't even have legs anymore. But I do. I still have legs and both of them still function. The lord looked over me today, and around me he extended his shield. He protected me in my time of trial, and he delivered me from evil. He did all this so that my hands may claim for him more souls of the impure. Thank you lord, for as long as you grant me your protection, I shall defend your kingdom; and in it build a stream filled by the blood of your enemies, its banks directed by their corpses. My vengeance shall be both be wrathful, and sanctified.

But its not just me, its Saul too. There is no doubt in my mind that the lord looked over him today, no weapon could penetrate his armor. No filth could waver his faith. I endeavor to be like him, to cocoon the faith in the lord around me like a shield; so that I too may become a shield for all those I love. Already I have failed too many. Bling cat, Combine, Hig's, even today both Vanilla and Antx took damage far worse then my own. All those killed or tremendously wounded in service for our planet; in service for our lords planet. I shall become their shield; and my plasma shall become there sword. And by shield and sword this alien menace shall be purged. Just wait tell I am released from this hospital xenos scum. In the name of the lord, the Fury of Caps shall know no bounds. My vengeance shall not be quenched until every single last one of you lays dead at my feet.

On the bright side I will get to catch up with a few of the guys while I am knocked out in here. I especially look forward to talking to Hig's, I feel like we have grown distant in the bitter torments of this war.

For now, calm and collected; until my wraith is instigated again.
the fury of Caps. Out.

I don't understand how we keep being so fucking lucky. Last mission had three wounded soldiers. By all rights we should have lost men. Fury seems very shaken by the grenade. I guess I know how he feels. I still wake up with the sensation of the plasma hit on my face. Only, in the dream the armour don't take it. I feel my face melting. Fuck it.
Higs is getting treated by the docs. I hope to Hell they are able to patch him up. Guts aren't supposed to look like that.
I'm sometimes uneasy by the presence of the preacher. I actually like the guy, and he is one hell of a soldier, but the whole religion deal never sat easy with me. But I can see that he really helps some of the guys coping. I wish he could help me as well I guess I just need to put aside my preconceived notions of self-righteous clergymen. Saul is not like that at all. He genuinely cares about us. His flock I guess. Perhaps I should go have a talk with him. Let him know that I feel that too much trust in his God runs the risc of people doing stupid things. If you believe that the Lord watches over you... you... I don't know, act foolishly and takes stupid chances sometimes. I don't know. It's probably just me.

I fell that this war is escalating. Spinning out of control. The xenos scum are trying to infiltrate the US it seems. I sure as hell hope the yanks has the moral fiber to withstand their attempts. But who knows what siren songs the xenos sing? I sure as hell don't. So that makes it our task to wipe them from the face of the Earth. No quarter, no rest, only death to the xenos.
I should stop all this overthinking now. It does me no good. Besides I wanna study the schematics on the last alien craft so I can be ready for new missions in that type of craft.

I think I may have just witnessed a truly religious moment. Sure it could've been just extreme luck, but how lucky can one man be? Nevermind that, how lucky can one whole team be? Saul just shrugged off those grenades like they were nothing, and somehow nobody wound up dead from that first ambush the aliens unleashed on us.

Granted our squad did take 3 more casualties and are being patched up, but the fact remains that we took on the biggest ship in the aliens' fleet and all of us came back alive, which is more than I can say for these Muton assholes we annihilated.

But we can't get caught up in the celebration. Chicago and LA still have an alien presence. We need to take them down too.

For now I sit, and wait, and pray that the next assaults go as well as this one.

Pretty amazing everyone made it back alive, although not everyone made it in one piece.
Looks like the aliens are making their move. I can't shake the feeling they haven't really been trying until now. All the previous attempts to intimidate and terrorize us seemed uncoordinated and unfocused by comparison. It's apparent they have been probing our capabilities. Now they have gauged the extent of our forces, they move to kick the chair out from under us. This is serious. If we lose America, we lose a large amount of direct funding and a huge amount of face with the other nations. It's like an alien domino effect. We can't afford to let this happen. There are still some battleships in the area, and with the hospital filling up, I suspect I might be drafted in to make up numbers. Pretty rough couple of first missions, but hell its only going to get rougher. It's time to hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
