I've been thinking, and I suspect that as a userbase we have pretty varied taste in music, so lets take advantage of this and see if we can pass on some of our favourite bands to each other.

Here's how it works:
We each post a band that we have a real fondness for, plus a little description and background information about them. Along with this we include a link to a Youtube video, or something similar, that features one of their songs.

I'll go first.

Bad Brains were a hardcore punk band from Washington DC, back in the early 80's. They were fairly unique in the punk scene in that they were all black Rastafarians, and played an alternating mix of insanely fast hardcore, and quite mellow reggae.
Here are two of their best songs: Pay to Cum, and Banned in DC, enjoy.

I'm a big fan of Kings of Leon:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qleENy0shck

They were originally from Tennessee, made up of three brothers and their cousin. The band is mainly alternative and southern rock with garage rock revival also playing a role in their music style. This song is one of my personal favourites, Use Somebody (I actually came up with a new idea for a music video for it, based around an idea I had for a new TV drama).

Kings of Leon are pretty good, considering what's been around for the past 10-15 years.

Nice, Bad Brains are a very good band. A guy I'm a huge fan of is Robert Johnson(He's my avatar). He was one of the original blues musicians, and very little is known about him. A popular story about him is that he made a pact with the devil so he'd become a great guitar player, but after nine years he'd give the Devil his soul. Another, more likely, theory of his demise is that he was poisoned by the husband of a woman he'd slept with. There are two known photographs of him in existance, and the man also has three gravestones in total, although nobody is quite sure where he's buried...

Here's a song by him:

In before Machinae Supremacy &/or Disturbed

*clears throat*
Whitechapel are a delightful American sextet who play an ambient style of music, typically known as Brutal Deathcore. Their first album, charmingly titled The Somatic Defilement [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vSdplEm95h0], contained 10 tracks primarily focused on the innocent subject of murder in all its gruesome glory. Their sound has changed a bit with their latest from This is Exile [http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=-o9tj-xH1qU], though still very much fitting in with the Deathcore label.

I really like THE CULT.
An 80's English Rock Band, blending a lot of different classic rock styles into their music, they're great check them out.

Perhaps we have different definitions of ambience?

One of my favorite songs ever:http:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6XrKN16cuc
Rammstein is one of my all time favorite bands, they originated in East Germany in the 90's and have gone on to become the #1 german language musicians in the world. They tend to write songs about odd things such as hermaphrodites, cannibalism and incest, however this song is a parody of right wing people and dictatorships as a response to being called neo-nazis.

As the wording of the rest of that passage should have implied; I didn't mean ambient in its true musical sense :-D

currently my favorite song for King Crimson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZfsyu9-Xsw&feature=channel_page

King Crimson is one of the few bands I like apart from Rush (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOnJMGRV0yU&feature=PlayList&p=318AFFB436342D78&playnext=1&index=44) They sound better on live than on CD.

I'm fond of a German band called Wir Sind Helden.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPmBjwjVYz0

They have a pretty good range- compare "Guten Tag" (linked above) to a song like "Denkmal" [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZ0za_7E6Og&feature=related]. IMHO you don't need to speak decent (or even terrible) German to enjoy the music, because I definitely didn't when I first heard them. They haven't released any English tracks, although +44 did a crappy Englified version of "Guten Tag."

Each to his own mate, but for some reason I just really can't get into death metal.

Anyway, here's some Anglo/Irish folk-punk for you all. I don't really know how much people in general listen to the Pogues, aside from the obligatory christmas song. The frontman's a brilliant and underrated artist called Shane MacGowan, a fantastic lyricist.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0eOuScDge0g&feature=related The Old Main Drag, about a young man's life on the streats of London.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=h8ZAqxg__Rs&feature=related The Sickbed of Cuchulainn, A song reflecting on the life of of a dieing man in his final moments.

Happy now?
Also: It's arguably the best song they ever recorded.
