Even though Rise Against sold out - it still sounds great. (This is from their latest album)

Rise Against is an American melodic hardcore band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1999. Rise Against rose to fame with their first two major label releases, Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004) and The Sufferer & the Witness (2006), with hits such as "Give It All", "Swing Life Away", "Prayer of the Refugee", and "The Good Left Undone". Their most recent studio album, Appeal to Reason, was released in North America on October 7, 2008.

Now this is an older song:

At present, I'd have to say my absolute favourite song is 'The Longest Day' by Iron Maiden, though if I had to pick a favourite by a band people aren't inclined to have heard of, it would have to be '2 Wars' by Slot, they are a band from Russia

The levels of prog in this thread are pleasing. King Crimson, Rush and Pink Floyd are all great bands.

Hawkwind, The original, and (as far as I know) only Space Rock band there has ever been.

Two songs by them here

I've never got on with modern American punk. it's just not angry enough for me.

Here's some proper punk. Black flag were a pretty fantastic hardcore band from the early 80's, one of the finest examples from the period.

Gorillaz-My friends call it techno-rock, but I think that their music is its own genre.

Sarah Brightman is a soprano, which is one of the vocal ranges. The soprano vocal range is the highest a human can achieve, and it can only be achieved by women and emasculated/castrated men who already produce very little testosterone in the first place. I dislike assigning genres, but I'd say her stuff is Classical Crossover, Pop-Opera (meaning pop songs sang with an operatic voice), and things like that. She's sung with legends like Alessandro Safina, Andrea Bocelli, etc.
I'll post one of her pop inspired songs, one true opera, and the epic Fleurs Du Mal, whose awesomeness is impossible to put into words.

If someone knows how to embed youtube videos, that'd be great ^^
Enjoy Sarah's music!

Lots of Gypsy and Middle Eastern stuff in his music, which is refreshing.
That's magnificent.

My tastes in music extend to about everything except gangster rap and some "soul" music.

But I've noticed a distinct lack of electronica in this thread, so

If I absolutely HAD to give Gorillaz a genre, I'd say Trip Hop comes closer, but I agree that their style is totally unique.
I loved the first album, hated G-Sides, but found the third one rather enjoyable.

Way too much stuff I could list so I'm gonna make it simple. Anything from some metal to ska to blues (like Robert Johnson) to even electronic-ish (Daft Punk). But as for just a random specific artist? I'd have to go with...

Franz Ferdinand.
A band from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in 2002.

My favorite band is Clutch [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clutch_(band)], a rock band from Germantown, Maryland (that's right, that place with the police station full of super mutants in Fallout 3 :p). Their sound changed quite a lot from their beginning in 1991 to now, from punk rock [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBh862XMhwo] to groove rock [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xh7pqoO9NLU] to blues rock [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ab6lr2b66Ig&feature=related], all of it kickass :D The lead singer has a degree in English Lit, so the lyrics [http://pro-rock.com/v6/lyrics.html] are very interesting and thought-provoking.
