Lets Talk About Constructive Criticism

And why no one gives it anymore.

So, before I go on with this, let me tell you a story, my fellow Escaspists.

I filmed something weird and kinda stupid on Friday just for the hell of it. So, I finally finished editing it. After I uploaded it, I posted it to Reddit. 20 seconds later, I had 4 down votes. So, I posted I thought that it was funny that in the time that no one could have possibly watched the full thing, people already were downvoting.

Now I've noticed that a lot of assholes have been on lately, but I didn't expect this. I would've at least expected someone to give it a damn chance. (Not getting butt hurt here, just saying.) But when people commented, no one gave constructive criticism on how I could improve or whatever.

It wasn't supposed to be mindblowing. Not supposed to be a James Cameron work (pre-Avatar). It was supposed to be weird and nonsensical. Hell, I act like a fucking psycho at the end. What can I say? I'm only 16. I'm still working on this shit. I can't improve without anyone giving advice!

So what do you think, my friends? Where has constructive criticism gone?

You're looking for it in the wrong place. Simple bystanders on youtube have no need nor desire - perhaps no ability - to give constructive criticism. You have to specifically state you want such criticism (which still isn't guaranteed to work) or seek out a community of like-minded individuals, or amateurs looking to support each other.

Basically, it's as StarCecil says. Those sites (moreso Youtube) are filled with people who act on a simple love-or-hate basis, and will state as such as plainly and frankly thoughtlessly as possible. You can't take their comments seriously.

For constructive criticism, you'll need to ask for it, or take your experiments to a site of like-minded people where you can be peer-judged.

You have to specifically state you want such criticism (which still isn't guaranteed to work) or seek out a community of like-minded individuals, or amateurs looking to support each other.

I wish I could find such a place friend. I really do. I usually go to Reddit to post stuff, but lately, I've been getting tired of all the Bullcrap I have to put up with there. Then The Escapist isn't a good place to post vids either, being that there's no real area on the forums to do so.

But I probably will start asking for constructive criticism in the description. Thanks you!

As for constructive crticism for your video:
-Do you have a tripod? The shots were all generally still, but when you panned through the garage it wobbled a few times, as did the shot of the actual garage door. If you don't have a tripod, get one
-The gun shots were out of sync, and just sounded dodgy. You want a gunshot noise with a bit of oomph
-I had no idea what was going on, but I guess that was kinda the point

For an amateur video, it certainly wasn't bad.

have you tried Vimeo? It's like a more "professional" YouTube that's not cluttered up with videos of cats and babies cutely crapping their pants.

-Yeah. Working on getting better sound effects. I'm searching the internet everywhere for them.

-And that indeed was the point. It wasn't supposed to make sense. I made a reference to how little sense it makes in the description.

Honestly, you may have been going for effect, but it looked too amateurish. At least to me it did.
