It was my favourite anime at one point, up until I watched FLCL. I still really like it, as you can tell by my avatar, but not as much as I once did.
What's it about? I've been on the lookout for a new anime to watch lately.
Let me answer that for you.

Its about go watch it right now because you will remember it forever. 8)

On my top 5 list, its second, only to Cowboy Bebop, and just slightly ahead of Tenchi Muyo.

If you like anime, and you love having a good time watching said anime, you will become utterly addicted to this show.

P.S. Its the single reason i bought a mo-ped, and use it every day xD

I quite liked it up until the child abuse episode and then Lucy's backround with the puppy...yeah, then it just got wierd for me. I watched it all of course, but I didn't quite like the ending anyways was too predictable I thought.

Another thing was that when I rewatched it a couple of months ago, the series wasn't as good as I remembered it.

Strange, I just started downloading that this morning. Now I am expecting great things.

OT: I liked Elfen Lied. I keep meaning to read the manga though, because the anime ends like halfway through the series.

As far as anime's go its very dark. There were a few scenes through out it what really did horrify me :O! But I really enjoyed it! Once you get passed the violence and nudity in the frist episodes it really does get good!

and for those who are interested...

I was horrified at the scene of Lucy's childhood, when the kids beat her puppy to death :/

And Mayu's background story was pritty bad...

FLCL? It's very strange. I can't quite explain what it's about without making it sound stupid (which it really isn't). I'll just say it has my highest recommendation and take that as you will. It's only six episodes long too so it's something you don't have spend days getting through.
Well, if it's only 6 episodes I might just go watch it right away. If it wasn't for my homework for French class, that is.

I watched the DVD up to the child rape scene...and that was the end of my interest in the series. Period.
And now I am interested in it again :D
Whatever floats your boat.
Personally, I don't particularly enjoy watching children being violated. No matter what medium. No matter what the reason.

It was good, not great, it kept me on the edge of my seat and it was torelable but I felt the characters were a bit half-baked.

it has probably been said before , But the manga goes way far into the story, perhaps on my personal opinion (Too far) way outside of the comfort zone, reading the entire manga can be an achievement itself, and i saw myself losing a bit of my humanity for couple days. nothing that cannot be solved by watching some slapstick comedy afterward :D

I've been meaning to watch it for awhile. Honestly I fear that it will destroy a part of me, of course that's a hyperbole but I am genuinely interested in it.

I watched it through once. It was pretty good. One of the better animé series I've seen. Especially since it had the decency to end after 13 or so episodes. I dislike anime suffering from Dragonball/Naruto-complex.

It'll probably have an impact. I was pretty hardened by the time I saw it and even I thought it could be intensly sad and depressing at times.

But that's what made me enjoy it too. The fact that it made me feel something.

Might as well get this out of the way...
THE MANGA IS BETTER!

*cough*
Thank you...

That being said, the blood/gore is over the top, and that was fine by me.
The nudity didn't ever really feel like TnA for TnA sake, which was weird...and the English Dub didn't totally suck.

However, why kind of irked me about the anime was its ending.
The manga has such a great ending, I mean...just fantastic.

There's even a 'tone' difference.
While the anime feels like a 'bad things happens to people and that's just the way it goes'.
The manga had this feeling of 'yeah, bad things happen, but if you're a good person things will work out in the end.

Maybe it's just me, but I felt like the anime was a little too focused on the gore and didn't develop the relationships as well as the manga (this happens in Chobits as well).

SPOILERS!!!!!! The only bit that got me was the part where those kids beat that puppy to death. but the bit right after where Lucy literally blows them up made me go from, "they killed a puppy, those bastards!" to "Fuck the puppy, this shit's awesome!"

This anime was just about everything you could do to screw over a little girl's life x.x. The girls were beaten physically, spiritually, mentally, the whole nine yards, and though I enjoyed the conveyed message, I was a bit disgusted at the lack of tact portraying it. This show didn't need a ton of nudity, fetishes, and violence to portray the inhumane treatment and their fucked up existence. Good story telling and proper allusions can adequately set the mind up to paint a more vivid picture. Instead the story has large segments of people just getting ripped about and then switches back to these extended arcs of innocence, which would have been more powerful without the excessive violence.

Past a certain point, the tons of blood and decapitations just make the idea seem zanny and cartoony, almost like a thirteen year old seeing how much he could get away with. It's kinda like what the SAW Franchise did with the torture traps. The first few did a stellar job at portraying the tense harrowing horror of being faced with your own demise, but after recycling it multiple times, with half a dozen entries the effect lost that verbose ring viewers got when they saw it. It doesn't take Elfen Lied to long to lose that actually. Honestly at one point I thought the author was just seeing how much shit could ironically happen to the same group of people just to fuck with me.

All in all though, its not a bad anime, short and simple just like this idea should have been. I wish the blood and over the top manslaughter was replaced with powerful allusions and symbolism, I feel someone had to get a kick out of the torture so maybe this wasn't for me. Though the anime covered some common and other powerful tropes, I can't earnestly say I'd recommend it x.x, there are just so many other animes that don't need vulgar scenes to produce a strong idea.

I liked it when I saw it. It had a great story, great and not so over the top characters. But that was back when I had some shred of respect for anime left. Elfen Lied is an example of good anime. Ghost in the Shell is too. Most other anime is complete and utter rubbish.

I've heard this. I watched all of it, and I almost rage quit the bloody thing when they killed that little dog. God that made me angry. Bloody kids got what they deserve.
It's one of the few anime I've watched and it's alright. But seriously, the dog...

The opening scenes were good. Rest was mostly crap.

All the characters except Lucy were boring. Also, I don't like ambiguous endings.

Oh, and the english dub was painful to listen to. But I am led to understand that that is par for course with anime.
