Hey everyone,

So I'm 27, and I've been raising a baby for the last 18 months. She's starting to develop an interest in music (wants certain things on, shows disdain for some, likes to dance), and I realized that I haven't really updated my catalog in like 5 or 6 years.

I used to play in bands when I was in high school, and I kept up a bit after I graduated, and for whatever reason I got into that rut. I haven't become the stereotypical "this isn't music! In my day...", but I find it really difficult to find new artists that I'd like, I mostly pick up new albums by artists I already listened to for years and I know I'm missing out on some amazing stuff. I intend to play music in the house way more often, so I'm excited about the idea of hearing what the Escapists are into these days.

I'll just share what I like/have liked, but please don't feel like a recommendation has to in any way resemble what I'm into. In the past I've liked tons of things I never thought I would, so it would be great if people could share what they personally love (though if someone's on the same page as me, those recommendations certainly wouldn't hurt). Anyway, I'll shut up and get on with it:

My favorite artist, period, is Elliott Smith. You may know him from his many songs being peppered throughout the movie Good Will Hunting. I'll share "Between the Bars":

In that vein, I like Nick Drake, Simon and Garfunkel, Sufjan Stevens and some Bright Eyes.

I'm also a metalhead/hardcore kid at heart. My favorite band is Converge:

In that vein I like Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, The Locust, Curl Up and Die, Ion Dissonance, Pig Destroyer, Between the Buried and Me, Blood Brothers, Cattle Decapitation, Cannibal Corpse (aging like fine wine), Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, Suicide Silence, The Chariot, and Cephalic Carnage to name some.

The other things I like I'll just call "alternative" to keep it completely simple and to avoid joining the pigeonholing committee. I don't like shoegaze as a genre, but "loveless" by My Bloody Valentine is one of my favorite albums:

I also like The Smiths/Morrissey, Aphex Twin, Pink Floyd, Blur, The Verve, Blonde Redhead, Radiohead/Thom Yorke, Sonic Youth, and The Velvet Underground.

I'm not at all averse to rap/hip-hop, but I prefer more socially substantial (I don't know how else to describe it) hip-hop like Common and Mos Def as opposed to gangster rap.

I kind of like some dubstep I've heard, but I don't know any artists other than Skrillex really. But I do like electronica/techno/trance/so on and so forth, also not knowing particular artists.

The only music I really cannot do is American country, or this hybrid someone has told me is called "hick-hop". I'm cool with like Johnny Cash, but so much modern country I've heard is pretty much top 40 pop with twang vocals and a lap guitar.

So yeah. A lot of that obviously is old, and that's fine in and of itself. But new great music is being made every single day, and I know that I've missed a lot of music over the years. So let's talk about the music we love, I'm sure that there's Escapists listening to things that I couldn't believe I've missed!

Toh Kay is an artist who is probably akin to the first few artists you mention. He does acoustic versions of songs which he has previously written for other projects or are by artists he enjoys.

For broadening tastes, I would also recommend his other projects, which are ska-punk: Catch 22 [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHUjqFWu-WM] (including music they wrote after he left [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cbEoConanNM]), Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcNp2QPjUMA] and Streetlight Manifesto [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUSKX_aYhoY].

For rap, check out Flobots. They were kind of a one hit wonder with a song called Handlebars [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA], but if you listen to their other songs they are really impressive:

One of their songs was also the first drumline I ever learned in 7/8:

They're also very political in terms of their lyrics, instead of gangster. I like to think of them as an acoustic Rage Against The Machine, though my dad prefers comparing them to Gil Scott-Heron:

Other bands I enjoy: Less Than Jake [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntL2IYTiJgo], Reel Big Fish [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQpDcDCgO9k] and Sonic Boom Six [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtEc8UkQ6Ec], all of whom fit comfortably into the ska-punk genre again.

The final artist I would recommend is Rufus Wainwright [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KvTDeHlIfI], who is probably my favourite solo artist, and does music in pretty much everything from soft rock [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jbie_ER_tjE] to electronic [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdHhsryzVbM] and from himself and an acoustic guitar [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWdqMWF9DSI] to big bands and choreographed performances [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLC4XFs5UhQ], and all with plenty of Judy Garland tributes [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qWxzI1T3MM] along the way.

Hey man, I'm not that familiar with the forums with regards to linking so I'm just going to put some names here. Along with some songs I like from them :p

As for socially conscious hip-hop:
Sage Francis - Vonnegut Busy, Makeshift Patriot
Army of the Pharaohs - Suicide Girl
Jedi Mind Tricks - I against I, Heavenly Divine
Immortal Technique - Dance with the devil, the poverty of philosophy

As for metal, I think I'm right when I say you like the harder stuff :)
Gojira - Backbone, Born in Winter, Clone
Cerebral Bore - Entombed in Butchered Bodies
Bolt Thrower - When Glory Beckons, Lest We Forget
Mastodon - Crystal Skull

As for weird/alternative stuff, I saw you liked Pink Floyd, does that mean you're open for other kinds of progrock?
If so then I can't recommend King Crimson enough, so I guess this would be my alternative list :p
King Crimson - 21st Century Schizoid Man, Starless, Pictures of a City, in the Wake of Poseidon, Level Five
Supertramp - School, Child of Vision
Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
Gentle Giant - Three Friends (that's the whole album, it's really good)

As for Electronic:
The Electric Super Joy OST is really nice
Drivepilot - Atlantic
Rob Dougan - Clubbed to Death (familiar if you have seen the Matrix), Furious Angels
Nero's Day at Disneyland - Child Protective Services, Charging Swarm of Mouseketeers

This is just a starter, if you want a few more, just ask!

Awesome. Converge are the best. Kurt Ballou is an insanely good producer as well, it's worth checking out anyone he's worked with-
Genghis Tron are an odd one, they're a mix of really extreme Converge-y metalcore with some cool ambient electronica thrown in.

Really crusty grindcore, basically. You know what you're getting in to when the album is called Blissfucker.

These guys are probably my favourite band on account of having an excellent sense of humour and massive groovy riffs as well as brutality. That said, this newest album is more aggressive and it sounds fucking superb with Kurt Ballou's production.

Oh man, totally this too. Tomas Kalnoky is a crazily good songwriter, I don't know how he manages to combine so many different styles into his stuff.

Well, I'm mostly into electronica this past decade or more. I like the upbeat positivity of it, and the music can be quite beautiful too.

The ones that are in my playlist the most these days are the following.

This one isn't electronica, but it's just super funky, and I love the sound of it.

I tend to like sweeping orchestral/choral stuff, so I have a lot of "trailer music" as well

This is Michael McCann. You might know him as "The guy who did the soundtrack to Deus Ex: Human Revolution", but this song is my favorite from him, and it's just something else he did as a solo project.

Since we're talking about a young girl, you might also like this song, simply because it's very bright and lively, and fun to dance around like a fool to. It's not a new song by any stretch, but my god-daughters love the hell out of it.

Another song that is really energetic and lively

This one is nothing like the others, in that it's a pure vocal song. You might know it.

I'm trying for a wide range, but it's mostly rock and/or electronica xD

Another electronica song, with some really strong female vocals. I love female vocalists, especially in electronica.

This one is a great sing a long song, or at least I think so. I'm a sucker for songs with an anthem feel. The kind of song you sing in a concert with a couple thousand other people singing along with you.

This is just a fun little song with a huge gamer love sendout to it. And it's nice and funky.

Another song with beautiful female vocals, and a strong driving drum beat. Also the video itself has some beautiful imagery to it.

Let's see, I'm sure there's more but I can't think of it. Hope that helps

Don't know how much you and I share taste in music, but I'll link what you might like.

You mentioned not liking country, but Marty Robbins is real old style country, more western than country though.

Then there's Fishmans, a Japanese dub music band (important: dub and dubstep are completely different), which you might like if you don't mind some non-english lyrics.

Jurassic 5 is the only rap group I've ever really gotten into, and even then my fondness varies from song to song.

There's also Hi-Standard, a Japanese punk band, however they sing entirely in (fairly decent) English.

Most of the bands I like are older Japanese bands that I won't link unless asked to since they don't tend to sing in English and I don't know how big of a negative non-english lyrics are to you. A lot of them draw from old rockabilly and blues music as influences, so if that sounds good just say so.

I've been jamming I The Mighty's new record lately, it's pretty damn good.

If you're looking for some heavier stuff, might I suggest some Stick To Your Guns? They're a great hardcore band with positive lyrics

Or maybe some sadboy pop punk is more your style...

You can't go wrong with Nujabes...
Other than that, how about some Fluid Minds?
Or what about some Jet Set Radio?
Or this mix[ture of tracks]?

Ehhh I like Royal Blood, I think they are seriously good (for a new band) but I'm not sure if you were looking for music for your baby or just for you.

Rock-a-bye baby? It's (hard)rock music, but in lullabye-versions.
It's got Metallica, RHCP, NIN, Led Zeppelin....I think over a hundred rock songs played mostly by a xylophone.

So, i presume you want new music... unfortunate what the internet did to the radio... i do not know many new bands either

That converge is a bit too extreme even for me, though i do like me some cattle decapitation now and then
