C&C: Generals was pretty good, as were the age of empire and age of mythology games. I got Shogun 2: Fall of Samurai a couple days ago and I'm enjoying it so far, but god damn that game is confusing.
What's got you confused, I'll see if I can help.

I enjoyed empire at war. Also dawn of war and age of empires. One of my favorite examples of rts elements was definitely lords of the realm 2 the sieges were epic.

I'm figuring it out slowly its just the game doesn't have much in the ways of a tutorial on how things work or what I'm supposed to do. I watched the videos, and am getting pretty good at land and siege battles. I thinks its just that the game is really deep and there is lots of stuff to manage.

Have you played the original Shogun2? Because I suspect a lot of that is covered in that tutorial.

Nope lol. Jumped right into Fall of the Samurai. I'm getting it though, won my first sea battle and captured the other ship, and so far I've managed to capture bout 3-5 provinces, and win a siege and a land battle where I was severely outgunned/outnumbered lol.

My favourite RTS is Spellforce. Just pick any of them up to Dragon Storm.
When you like RTS you just HAVE to try at least Spellforce 2, it's not expensice anymore, just try it.
Great gameplay, great story, just great!

I haven't really played many, but I do enjoy them. I've mainly just played the Age of Empires series, Command & Conquer and Battle for Middle-Earth.

Personally, I loved BFME and still play it every now and then. I'm really hoping that they make a BFME3 when the Hobbit comes out but....I'm not getting my hopes up. Sure, it had a lot of issues, but that game, plus some good mods, was fantastic.

My problem with RTS games is that they do get tedious - but they the same could be said about a lot of other genres (FPSs, in my opinion). Also balancing issues. Both players and AI often tend to rush, which isn't fun for anyone.

Storywise....well, out of the ones I've played, the stories are all a bit average, but they suffice.

I'd love a Mass Effect universe RTS. I think that would be brilliant.
fall from grace, ehem myth 2 is the best rts ever made. Although no base-building its tactical warfare surpasses most of them with the story "without too much spoiler".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oR2ceo7Evo get to 0:50 and you will understand a far far far better story than that joke called warcraft.
How did I know you would bring up Myth! I share a love for those games aswell :3

OT:

Favourite RTS game is probably..... Myth too tbh, however I do not own Myth 2 which is disappointing, only Myth The fallen lords + Myth 3 The wolf age :*(
