Ok, so we've all hopefully seen the news about Sony.
First off, I'd like to say that GeoHotz can't possibly be the reason this crap is going down. Yes, he did jailbreak the PS3, but he never hacked PSN. PSN and PS3 are two different things. Just because you hacked into a computer doesn't mean you've hacked into the internet. These are different things that I think we should get straightened out.

Now, as for the news. To me, it's a bit disturbing. I have a PSN account and I'm not too happy knowing that someone may have my info. I also feel sorry for other customers. Those with credit card(s) on their accounts will be in real trouble.

Now, my belief is that Sony wasn't secure enough in the first place. Before you rage quote that previous sentence, please let me finish. I've always believe Sony's has brilliant minds working for its company. How could they let their PSN be hacked with what appeared to be relative ease? I know some people are very smart, but let's be honest. It is highly unlikely that a hacker would be good enough to take down brilliant Sony security. This makes me think that Sony may have slacked off a bit in making a secure network.
And yes, I do think the hackers are total asshats.

I hope this problem does not have a negative impact on Sony, but sadly, it may happen.

What are your thoughts on the recent Sony attacks, problems and news?

Well, being a PlayStation guy for two consecutive generations I do feel like my trust really slipped with this event. As if it weren't bad enough that the PSN has been down (not like I play games online anyway), but the recent news about how our information has been stolen kinda creeps me out.

Though I also think people are stepping a little out of bounds here. It's not like Sony accidentally leaked all of our information all over the place. This was an attack against them and they just didn't have the metaphorical "guards" guarding every entrance. It'd be hard for Palpatine to be angry at Vader because someone found a weakness in the Death Star and exploited it.

The PSN is a free service. The fact that people actually want monetary compensation is just facepalm-worthy in my humble opinion.

How do you know it was with relative ease, it could have taken the hackers months to hack it. I am pretty worried about Sony, with the lawsuit and all. They've lost many supporters and potential sales of future consoles. Who would want to buy a console from them if our information is not protected.

I like you.

I don't know how much of my trust with them has slipped since this isn't over yet. I will say though, I'm now gonna be a little more weary when I give my credit card over to an online service, if not out right delete it when I done with a purchase.

The whole lawsuit thing disgusts me, I don't know how monetary compensation is gonna make anyone feel any better. Their private information was taken and it may/may not have been used, so I don't see how that's an equivalent exchange.

BTW, nice analogy .

maybe you Missed the fucking news [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/109568-Sony-Admits-Private-PSN-Info-Has-Been-Stolen-All-Of-It]. Data was taken, personal data, credit card info, credentials, all of it. People are entitled to some compensation.
They said both in another article and in their email that credit card information is extremely unlikely to have been stolen, and even if it was, it's a guarantee that the security code was not stolen (so they can't use it to buy stuff online).

But compensation for what? Unless something comes out of it there's nothing to compensate for. If you ran a soup kitchen and someone broke in and stole all the food and supplies in the building, as well as a list of all the people that visit there to eat, would you suddenly feel inclined to pay each person who visited your soup kitchen $10,000? No! It's a free service that we signed up for. Call me a "Sony fanatic" or whatever you want, it's just blatantly obvious to me that they owe us nothing.

Again, it was a breach of security, not an internal leak. If we were paying for this service I would feel differently, but we're not.

I think the Anonymous hackers are basically trying to hit Sony where it hurts for picking on the little guy, and doing so with ridiculous success. I will never side with a corporation in any conflict ever, so despite the fact that the hackers have gone a little too far, are clearly punk ass /b/tard types, and have caused a lot of collateral damage for people pretty much completely unrelated to Sony, I feel like this is kharma on some level. Sony tells us we're violating copyright, so we show them just how much we're capable of violating. And they tried to sue Geohotz for millions, just like classic money grubbing pricks. Sony doesn't deserve anybody's sympathy, they wanted a fight, they just underestimated the other side's ability to fight back. They deserve to lose the money, it's a drop in the ocean for them.

For the record, I'm mainly a PC gamer, but I own a Wii with the Homebrew Channel on it, so maybe take my opinions with a grain of salt. Even though I do it occasionally, I don't advocate pirating games (or music), I think piracy is theft and there's no other way to color it, and if you disagree you're just smug and in denial, but most games are overpriced and there's got to be a balance of power. The Sony guys are perfectly willing to act like thieves when they feel entitled too.

@Stammer
That soup Kitchen thing was a god awful analogy. It's not a matter of what "makes sense". It's about people's legal right to security. PSN is down but you're probably getting free money. Stop complaining.

I'm sure that Geohotz isn't to blame for this, but there's no doubt in my mind that whoever did this wanted to teach big bad corporate Sony a lesson for picking on poor wittle Geohotz.

Anyway, I pray Sony gets through this without too much scar tissue. I'm preparing for the worst though.

Again, I have no delusions about this brand of idealism, Geohotz seemed like kind of an arrogant douche and he was doing something "illegal". But Sony is a multibillion dollar corporation in a world where money is power, so BOO FUCKING HOO SONY BOO FUCKING HOO.
