Or, rather, "you guys post about metal and I'll check in on the handful of occasions I have Internet access". I assume at least a handful of you don't listen to the Godawful EDM that pollutes the airwaves.

Right now I'm digging the fuck out of some early Scar Symmetry:

It's like Wagner came back from the dead in the early 21st century to write metal. That chorus is ridiculous. Deeply Romantic.

I guess 'melodeath' is a guilty pleasure of mine. Better not let my kvlt friends know I enjoy a little saccharine with my sugar.

Here's another decent Gothenburger band that doesn't sound like it belongs on the same stage with Bullet For My Valentine at Ozzfest:

I adore the 'warm' tone of the last solo. Quite seasonal.

Oh, yeah: I don't want to forget excellent 80s metal.

Here, watch Crispin Glover dance to some. (Or watch Jason Voorhees kill teenagers while Crispin Glover dances for about ten seconds, to be accurate.)

To me, this is much preferred to the rawest of underground black metal acts. No artifice, no ideological bent - just big hair.

Back when Warrel Dane's voice didn't crack every other note.

Fuck yo copyrights.

Just recently, I've been exploring the niche sub-sub genre known both as war metal and bestial black metal. Basically a fusion of the most extreme elements of black and death metal, with slight hints of thrash and, with some bands, grind thrown in for good measure. It ends up being a very aggressive, fuck off and die kind of music, and I think it sounds absolutely great. Its original creation is generally credited to Canadian cult band Blasphemy, with their album 'Fallen Angel of Doom' in 1990. Finnish band Beherit played a big role as well. So far my favourite band in the style has been Canadian band Revenge, who, for much of their career, included Angelcorpse mainman Pete Helmkamp.

Anyways, it's noisy as fuck and if you haven't been listening to extreme metal for long you might have some difficulty adjusting to it and hearing the riffs, but provided you can it's immensely enjoyable.

And since I mentioned Pete Helmkamp earlier, here's an Angelcorpse song, which is significantly easier listening than the other songs.

You know, I don't love black metal, but you might just convert me yet if you keep posting some of those bitchin' war metal acts.

Well to be fair, it isn't straight black metal. There's just as much death metal involvement in its influence. But sure, which of those ones appealed to you the most? There's actually full-length albums of those bands on YouTube (usually around the 30 - 35 minute mark, a good time for such music). I can post a few of the greatest ones if you have the desire and/or time.

I probably don't have the time right now, but I certainly have the desire.

Throw 'em up. I'll let you know how I like them when we're old and grey and bearded.

Alright, for sure.

Sorry if that is a bit of an overload, but listen to 'em at will. Who knows, maybe you'll dig it so much you'll crave more?

Over the last couple weeks, there have been a few albums that have been put on near-constant repeat at some point:

In the case of Edguy and Stratovarius, I mostly got listening to their albums because a song came up on Pandora and I got in the mood to go back and listen to them. It helps that they were already among my favorites.

In the case of Sabaton, I just haven't gotten a chance to listen to the album much since it released, so I finally made time to listen through it. I'm still not sure how I feel about it compared to The Art of War or Coat of Arms, but it is still a fun album to listen to.

I will pretend I didn't see that. Just, you know, DON'T. I do and I like them equally, especially on the same track. Let's not perpetuate the stereotype.

--------------------------------

I am currently digging:

Deadlock, indie sounding gothic/death metal:

Soilwork, because Speed is a boss [death]:

and this little odd one called Amaranthe [pop? metal]:

and Meshuggah [extreme]:

Nothing wrong with a little electronic music my friend.

I recently found a really cool power metal band called Noble Beast that have been kicking my ass.

https://noblebeastofman.bandcamp.com/

I recommend listening to Behold the Face of your Enemy. The singer's voice is very deep for the genre, though he does do some wailing highs, too. It's nice to listen to metal with proper singing sometimes, no? :D

Continuing on that theme, there's another little known band called Arch Nemesis who released one of my favourite albums. It's generally considered "dark power metal" but it really only has a couple of power metal songs, this being amongst them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvvSeyFl8C0

They're a bit "janky" in some ways, with some imperfect playing and production errors here and there, but they're never outright sloppy and the whole album just has this beautiful, mystical atmosphere, especially when you listen to it as a whole rather than individual songs.

But really, up until recently I was listening mostly to orchestral music and atmospheric, alternative stuff like Slowdive or Lisa Germano. I wound up getting back into metal doing vocals on an atmospheric black metal project of my friend's and since then I've been digging out all my old doom metal and black metal albums and rocking the fuck out. Been finding a lot of new great stuff to listen to as well.

Instead of going for the obvious names like Emperor or Drudkh or My Dying Bride, let's keep plugging shit nobody's ever heard of :D

https://avantgardemusic.bandcamp.com/album/from-the-dead-villages-darkness

Try Distant Haze Was Arising. I was a little put off by the vocals at first (very shrill shrieking), but the beautiful melodies won me over and they do kinda contribute to the atmosphere of suffering.

https://corrmona.bandcamp.com/album/dair

Somewhat more accessible. Something of a cross between black and doom metal without being DSBM. Great melodies, nice vocals, lovely atmosphere.

https://myrkur.bandcamp.com/album/myrkur

One-woman atmospheric black metal project. All those choir-like chants are all her and they're pretty amazing. The vocals seem to be a lot better recorded than the electric guitars, but they have a kind of pleasant fuzziness to them. There are some great traditional and neo-folk elements to this, too. It's another one with a very sorrowful atmosphere.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUK-F25rrhU

This one is a bit more well known. Empyrium actually helped get me into some of the weirder, more sorrowful metal that I love as well as neo-folk. The neo-folk elements are VERY strong with this one and the band would go into an entirely folk direction with future albums. For now enjoy this folk/doom metal masterpiece!

There's lots of really great stuff in this thread. Nice variety, too! It really shows the breadth of the music that metal encompasses.

Yay Soilwork! Some of my fav prog metal by far, what was once led by Opeth is now led by Soilwork! Mainly because Opeth has epically dropped the ball when it comes to metal...

I do!

Hey guys, Justin Bieber did a thing! Doesn't that make you angry?

Howabout that nickelback?

Dubstep sounds like someone autotuned my dishwasher!

The only good music comes from people who died before 1982!

...I forgot what we were talking about.

Oh yeah, metal. I'd like to discuss metal, but it's harder to get an actual definition of metal than it is to get Gamergate supporters to independently describe matching motives and demands. Recently, I saw classic Metallica described as Hard Rock, which I think moves Led Zepplin down the metal hierarchy to "light jazz."

So I'll just toss out some Type O Negative and hope they haven't been redefined as Brit Pop since I last looked.

I don't know how obscure we're going, but I'm going to assume you know who Iron Maiden is. If not, get going!

The Bards of Metal, and home of one of the best metal vocalists ever. I mean, they have an entire album devoted to The Silmarillion, how can you get more badass than that?

This is what happens when a powermetal band goes down the rabbit hole. Hilariously over the top. I mean, seriously, just read the lyrics to this song and tell me that's not epicly hilariuosly awesome.

I don't actually know much bout these gents, but their music's pretty good.

The big thing about Iced Earth is they've had 3 singers with vastly differing vocal styles. And something about Schafer being a pain to work with or something.

That ***** be rocking a kama. Don't argue with the kama.

I know fuck all about these guys, but he looks pretty damn serious.

There's plenty of others, but I can't be bothered finding them.

Here's a few I'm listening to at the moment, mostly extreme metal of one stripe or another.

I'm not normally a fan of Behemoth because of their tendency to employ strangely odd vocals and precisely all the triangles but this album is blinding.

Classic Dimmu, back when they used to be a serious and well thought of band.

I love this album, it's pretty damn light for Marduk but this song has a weird black metal meets acoustic coffeeshop musician feel.

Death/Black/Folk metal. Not a new album but they are my favourite band.

Yeah, same here. It's better than Carolus Rex, but still not excellent. That said, I just saw them a few weeks ago and they're just as good in concert as always.

OT: Been listening to a bunch of stuff recently. Really digging Fallujah's new album. It's great if you love Tech/prog death.

Also, Dream Theater's scenes from a memory just had its 15th anniversary.
