Oh boy, a metal thread!

I'm more into the progressive/weirder stuff.

The new album came out a couple days ago, which I'm really digging.
This is about the heaviest thing I can think of. They're about to go on tour opening for Meshuggah, y'know.
These guys are unbelievably catchy, and hilarious to boot.

Or if you want to get REALLY weird:
And it's an entire EP!

I loves me some of them metals. I tend to listen to a lot of sludge/doom and (cue the 'wah, that's not metal') metalcore- usually mathcore. I listen to plenty of other stuff (I've been really digging the new Hang the Bastard album lately), but those are pretty much the main two kinda things I listen to a lot of.

Keith Buckley's gotta be one of my favourite vocalists of all time.
These guys have a song about shooting zombies in the face. Incredible.
I also play bass in a black metal band now apparently. Didn't see that one coming at all.

The Bards of Metal, and home of one of the best metal vocalists ever. I mean, they have an entire album devoted to The Silmarillion, how can you get more badass than that?
Posting Blind Guardian and NOT posting their greatest song ever to grace the ears of music listeners world wide? For shame

You're welcome.

This one goes out to my IT Crowd watchers. And yes, I know, it isn't track 4. I just like to assume Richmond made a mix CD rather than the whole Nymphetamine album.

What? Why are you giving me that look? Yes this was a serious song. Can't you tell? This is a very serious metal band, and they should be treated as such.

I have so many Metal bands I love, almost all of which are power metal.

Even if You aren't Christian check out Theocracy. They are fantastic!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aManeks8Vf8

Any Blind Guardian song, any Nightwish song though Ghost Love Score is there best song ever.

How has no one mentioned Christopher Lee?

Battlelore is good if you like Lord of the Rings.

Lastly I'll mention Dawnrider, a "Band" actually a decent size multiple band project headed by Majesty. The only album is Fate is Calling Part 1 and it is fantastic.

I love EToS.

I've been digging some Kalmah lately and some Katatonia (both early and old). Some Insomnium and some Dark Tranquillity.

But the band I always come back to is Amorphis.

Here's my 5 favourite metal songs. I gave short descriptors in order for people to discern what would interest them or not. Though I'm guessing most people have heard Opeth. I like to think I have a lot of "metal street cred" whatever that means.
(actually I like listening to Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake too, shhh)

Cryptopsy: Canadian Death Metal

Strapping Young Lad: Canadian Industrial Metal

Moonsorrow: Finnish Folk Metal

Anaal Nathrakh: English Black Metal/Grindcore

Opeth: Swedish Progressive Metal

Awesome stuff so far. Just needs more doom.

All awesome stuff. I remember the first time I heard Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, I was legitimately blown away.

But WE CAN GO DOOMIER. Let's hit the funeral doom stuff. You can't spell funeral without fun :D

For those not in the know, funeral doom is basically death/doom or gothic doom, but even slower and darker. They tends to use a lot of keyboards in similar ways to ambient or dark ambient music, but this isn't set in stone.

Funeral are seen as one of the genre's founders, though they're pretty different to most funeral doom in that they have a clean female singer for the majority of each song, whereas most funeral doom tends to mostly use a variant on death metal vocals.

There's some debate as to whether or not these guys count or whether they're just death/doom but their super slow pace and focus on atmospherics makes them a clear part of the sub-genre to me. It's a pretty ill-defined sub-genre anyway!

Evoken are quite similar to these guys in a lot of ways, but nobody ever doubts that these guys are funeral doom.

Some other big names in the genre include Mournful Congregation and Thergothon but I'm not as familiar with them.

Much like atmospheric black metal, this kind of metal tends to attract one-man projects. A quick search on the Metal Archives for funeral doom yields tons. The average quality is noticeably higher than with one-man BM projects, though.

Just recently, I've been exploring the niche sub-sub genre known both as war metal and bestial black metal. Basically a fusion of the most extreme elements of black and death metal, with slight hints of thrash and, with some bands, grind thrown in for good measure. It ends up being a very aggressive, fuck off and die kind of music, and I think it sounds absolutely great. Its original creation is generally credited to Canadian cult band Blasphemy, with their album 'Fallen Angel of Doom' in 1990. Finnish band Beherit played a big role as well. So far my favourite band in the style has been Canadian band Revenge, who, for much of their career, included Angelcorpse mainman Pete Helmkamp.
Oh man, Revenge is some good shit. Love that band. Also, check out Cobalt for a different take on war metal. Really interesting stuff.

OT: Love all sorts of metal, really. From the dankest of black, to even some of the poppy modern shit everybody loves to hate. Currently listening to the earlier albums from the legendary Carcass, and they are still damn great. Few goregrind albums better than that. :D

Heh, good point. I sorta went for "The Most Definitive Power Metal Song Ever" instead of "The Most Epic Power Metal Song Ever."

But seriously, Sabaton's "Heroes" album is pretty badass people. So is Seven Kingdom's last two albums.

My personal favorite band would be The Project Hate MCMXCIX, a pretty damn intense industrial death metal band. These guys are incredible, check them out.

Some other good bands include:

Septic Flesh: Greek death metal

Turisas: Finnish folk metal

Machinae Supremacy: video game themed power metal

Noumena: Finnish melo-death

Black Comedy: industrial metal

...and Oceans: really weird symphonic black metal / industrial metal

Also, I would also recommend Devin Townsend Project, Blind Guardian, and Strapping Young Lad. Other people have posted their stuff, so I won't bother re-posting them here, but still, check them out. They're great.

For something completely different from my previous posts, I also really, really enjoy epic doom metal. A sub-sub genre of doom metal descended from Candlemass' 1986 album 'Epicus Doomicus Metallicus'. My favourite bands in the genre include Solstice, Scald, DoomSword and Ereb Altor (though they shifted away from the genre since).

Scald's one and only full-length, Will of the Gods Is a Great Power, released in 1996, is an absolute pinnacle of the genre and one of my all-time favourite albums. It's perfection.

Since a lot of people are mentioning some of the more popular Melodeath bands, I can HIGHLY recommend checking out MyGrain (Criminally overlooked)

Love me some stoner sludge too:

And prize to weirdest band I've been listening to goes to Destiny Potato which is some strange Serbian amalgamation of Prog/Djent, Pop and Eastern influences. Strangely catchy.

Love Skyharbor and cannot wait for their new album to drop in November.

And if you haven't listened to Eluveitie before, please do so at your earliest convenience, one of the only truly legitimate folk metal bands (i.e they actually play traditional instruments and don't chuck in some keys and call it folk)

Or, rather, "you guys post about metal and I'll check in on the handful of occasions I have Internet access". I assume at least a handful of you don't listen to the Godawful EDM that pollutes the airwaves.
Honestly, I have been out of the scene for so long now that I don't even know what EDM means. Is that anything like what we used to call Mall-Core? Seems you have some good taste, but there are always some old-school bands that need to be introduced to the young-ins. Hey, at least they play metal on the airwaves now, when I was your age we were forced with a choice between Mariah Carey and Garth Brooks.

How are you for punk? Back before Napster, the (quite literally) legendary band Antischism was hard to find in physical copies. I remember searching for months to find a CD or tape. And even on YouTube, it is hard to find the correct recordings at decent definitions. This is from 1988, and yes that is a female lead:
Honestly, that is a terrible recording of Salvation or Annihilation, I have a better one.

If you don't like punk-metal that much, you can't really go wrong with some Sepultura or Fear Factory:

For sheer artistry, there really was no beating Zao from 1995-2005. Seriously, no matter what anyone says, they were the best and most original of the Art-metal-hardcore bands.

For metal with a more classical sound, or that takes inspiration from a wider variety of genres, I tend to be partial to Extol's first and second albums.

Well I have lots more where that came from, but that should do for now.

Esoteric are my absolute favourite doom metal band, great choice!

Also if any guys want their perception of what metal is to be challenged and have a mindfuck of a video at the same time...
