Correct pronunciation is Li-nux, the I sound is short, it says so in a handful of the Linux manuals I have lying around.

Lin ex

or lin ooks

Linux (commonly pronounced /ˈlɪnəks/ LIN-əks in English,[4][5] also pronounced /ˈlɪnʊks/, LIN-ooks[6])

I used to think it was "leenux", because that's how you pronounce the name of the guy who invented it (Linus). Apparently it's "linnux", though.

Well that would make sense. Considering American accents, I guess it's easier.

Calumon: What about Digimon Accents?
Except that's not true, if you pronounce it using the Ly sound in the states it's a clear sign you're talking about something you don't understand and are just sounding it out phonetically (as Linus is pronounced with a Ly sound in English) - everyone who actually uses/knows enough about to be coherently discussing Linux pronounces it like Linus Torvalds does [small](or they're stubbornly saying it wrong because they started saying it wrong and refuse to change now)[/small]. After all, he ought to know the correct way to pronounce his own operating system's name.

There may have been some confusion way back in the early days, but when the video of Torvalds pronouncing it came out, that pretty much set the record straight among the Linux community, and outsiders take their cues on how to pronounce it from said community, etc.

So no, it's not a question of regional accents at work - everyone who knows better says "Lin-nux", only the uninformed (or stubborn) say "Ly-nux".

I seem to recall back in the early days there were differant versions. One being Lynux, one Linux. Lineux was the smaller, more stream lined version and eventually became the 'standard' that everyone uses now.

Totally Lin-nux.
Ly-nux sounds like some part of your sinus.

"Oh, my Ly-nux is infected again!"
Quiet.

It's Lin-nux.

It's Lin-ux. That's just the way it is said.

Edit: Funny thing about that comic in the OP is that Linux viruses (yes, they do actually exist, though they are significantly more rare) are some of the most dangerous, as a general rule of thumb. The vast majority of the userbase is also significantly more familiar with computers, enough so to make them fairly impotent, but if they do happen to get infected with one, bad things follow.

Not that I've ever had much cause to say or hear the word, but before today I'd never heard it pronounced Li-nux, only ever Ly-nux, so that's what I say.

I'm perfectly willing to admit that it's the wrong pronunciation (can't really argue with the creator), but it's a foreign word, so I'm quite happy to pronounce it differently. I mean English and American people pronounce words differently and we're supposed to be speaking the same language.

I say Li-nux; therefore this statement is invalid. XD Then again, I also went to college for computer programming, so we all formed a consensus early on; heh.
