Multi player. Back when I started gaming it was an optional extra that games had. They had to stand up as a world beating single player experiance. My most cherished gomes, old and new, have all been made with the single player in mind. Banjo-Kazooie, Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, Skies od Arcadia and mostly Beyond Good and Evil.

But now I can't go anywhere without hearing about how "Game-X is so awsome online" and how "I'm missing out on the REAL experiance". Yes I don't have Xbox live but I don't see how that changes anything. Surly a game should be good regardles of being online?

The point I am trying to make is that why should I have to pay for the real experiance when I allready payed for it? I'm not against multi player games (split screen, do you remember that? Left 4 Dead, Time Splitters 2, Golden Eye). I just feel disheartened that more games are aimed at the multiplayer experiance than it is at the bitter lone wolf gamers who play to get away from the morons in life (like Yahtzee does).

Does anyone even know what I'm on about or am I just some dick shouting at a deaf world?

P.S.
Don't even get me started on DLC.

There're plenty of AAA games that focus on the single-player experience. As for paying extra for multiplayer, I believe Xbox Live is the only service that requires users to pay for multiplayer gaming. It's also why I stick to the PC and PS3 platforms.

Stick to titles with a good single-player experience, ignore multiplayer fans, and drink some hot chocolate. You'll feel better.

Well I like multiplayer.

I find single player to be boring when everything I'm doing can't be shared with other people. I found a dragon quite hard to take down in Dragon Age, and eventually got through it and went "yay", but if I had done that with a buddy of mine as well the experience would have been much better.

But then I mostly play online FPS, where I can get 400+ hours out of a game because it's always getting harder. Single player you can complete on the hardest difficulty once and then there is no challenge, with multiplayer there will always be someone better than you.

There are still many absolutely excellent games being made that are singleplayer only. While it's true that developers and publishers have realised that games with significant multiplayer components are selling very well (and sell XBL memberships), I imagine there will continue to be heaps of fantastic singleplayer experiences to be found. It is not a small market for such singleplayer experiences.

I have gotten 2 of my 60+ games (that I have bought since sometime in the 90's) because of multiplayer and only because enough of my friends had them as well.

A game is a singleplayer experience for me. Not that I don't enjoy som MP now and again but it is rarely the reason for a purchase more like an added bonus. I never check for multiplayer mode when buying only whether the game looks fun/interesting.

It's just that I feel a lot of games rely too much on multiplayer or dlc to enrichen the experiance. That and I'm bitter about knowing I will never be able to play some gems on Xbox live like Baird.

Games that rely heavily on multiplayer and I have an understanding: They leave me alone and I promise not to hunt down and destroy the dickheads among their developers who thought emphasizing the multiplayer portion in gameplay was a good or even acceptable idea.

I love multiplayer, it takes the games to a new level that single player never could achieve.
Who not just ignore the games that a multiplayer focused like L4D, COD and Halo if you don't have an online subscription.

Skies of Arcadia, haven't heard that one in awhile. What a wonderful game. Anyways if you don't want to pay for multiplayer then you should give PC gaming a go. However I agree, single player in a game with multiplayer should be of high quality and not just a tutorial into the multiplayer. Some games are just fine with being multiplayer focused, but those don't really have stories or they are told through the game like Left 4 Dead series, Team Fortress 2, and Counterstrike.

I never play multiplayer, and I'd have to agree that some game series (especially in the FPS genre, but also some recent RTS) which used to have great single player campaigns are downgrading these to a mere accessory to Multiplayer. And that's a shame.

There's still plenty of games, like Uncharted 2, GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption , which manage to excel in both categories though (from what I've heard: Never played any of them on-line, and only got RDR today and haven't fired up its SP yet), and with strong SP-only game series like God of War, Dragon Age, Ratchet & Clank, Mass Effect, Fallout etc., I don't think it's a trend we have to worry too much about overall single player gaming just yet. But it's quite annoying to see some great series turn increasingly away from their roots and into the Unreal realms.

If Elder Scrolls V is a MMORPG, I'll have to declare open war on Multiplayer though...

Would be a far better world.
Agreed. Well, ok maybe some coop would be nice. Online however? Just never works with society. Eg: A conversation heard over a microphone during an online session: "FUCKING DO SOMETHING! I'MA FIND OUT WHERE YOU LIVE AND BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF YA!!!!" Etc etc.

Oh what a sad sad world we live in.

Multiplayer and DLC should exist as elements to enhance the main single-player portion of a game, not the other way around.

Now if only game devs understood that....

I enjoy multiplayer, but I do think they should bring back bots, like with Timesplitters, so you can play against a computer opponent if you don't have internet access. That would be an easy way to make the experience a little more equal.

You don't have to be a gold member in order to download XBL titles, but you do still need an internet connection. I'm guessing you might have one since you are posting here.

But don't give Microsoft your Credit Card number if you aren't prepared for them to have it forever. Buy a points card instead.

Welcome to the Escapist btw.

The only game I have enjoyed online multiplayer with is Bad Company 2. Other than that I tend to stick with splitscreen.

While I agree that many games do need strong single-player, and to sacrifice it for multiplayer is often a grave error, the trend does not go in only one direction. The battlefield series was for a long period made up of essentially multiplayer-only games, the singleplayer being only there really for practice. Now with bad company 1&2 the singleplayer has been beefed up. Not however at a great cost to the multiplayer experience (at least in my view). This is however only one counter-example in the sea shoddy singleplayer.
