If you had full hearts while wielding it, it would shoot out a ranged light beam.

In addition I want a lightsaber Shovel so that I can not only kill my enemy but also dig his grave with ease. It cuts through tough clay like a warm knife through butter.
They did that in Jimmy Neutron (the lightsaber shovel). You're too late I'm afraid.

How about a lightsaber hookshot/grappling hook? Not only does it kill your foes, it lets you take their place! It's like Chess!
Just looked up Jimmy Neutron... CURSES! Foiled by children's television again!

well, you could try and make it more badass looking, or have it make shockwaves when it hit stuff, create visual distortion where it is swung, but...

The lightsaber is already pretty sweet. not much we can do to make it better, like say, bolonie

Wow you guys are amazingly creative, I knew I came to the right place. Good ideas so far, keep 'em coming!

Those things that Axel had in Kingdom Hearts, but everything except the handle made of the light.

Wolverine claws + Lightsaber = Win?

Yeah, i reckon lightsaber claws would be pretty cool, probably been done already tho.
Oooh, that's actually interesting that I never thought of. not sure it'll work for this character, but I like the idea.
This has happened several times in Wolverine comics, including his current Wolverine Weapon X arc.

Well I love double-bladed lightsabers but that's not new...

What if you made a lightsaber that can extend and subtract to whatever length you wanted? Rather than the fixed length for normal lightsabers.
Been done before:

Damnit, this is why I hate being creative because no matter how hard you try someone else would have thought of it before.
On topic: it's pretty hard to top the idea of a laser sword that can cut through everything.
Cut through anything?

It's also an mp3 player and says "Rick James, biatch!" upon fatalities?

Or maybe it changes colour when in proximity to opposite force alignment.

Okay, I knew someone was going to mention cortosis, but apparently it gets harder to find over the years in the EU. If you play KOTOR, it's quite abundant, but what little I recall right now is that it got harder to find over the centuries.

Hmm...

Lightbuckler (a disk of the same power type attached to the forearm.)

Lightlighter (for the smokers out there.)

A power whip (though only the last third would need to be tactile in that manner. Imagine, of course, that it wraps around a targets neck or leg.)

A tunneler device (place it on the ground, and it starts vaporizing its way into the lower floors of a building or basement, leaving a 1.5 foot wide hole in its wake (just wide enough for a skinny person to slip through.)

Somewhat off topic, but a blaster grenade. You roll it into the room and it fires in every direction as it spins. Not very subtle, but grenades rarely are.

I want to add throwing weapons, but that would be somewhat difficult given that light-weapons intrinsically need a power crystal to generate the blade. The only exception, I suppose, is that you could embed a smaller crystal to handle the smaller blade. The only problems after that would be expense, and weight, given the parts involved.

There are a few other limitations actually.

Water has been known to short out active saber blades. There are a limited number of mineral types that will also stop light-sabers, but they are rare or unstable.

Take any weapon in human history.

Remove the metal/killing bits.

Attach lightsaber blade.

Done.

(My contribution, light-umbrella. Lightsaber at one end, a handy umbrella at the other for keeping rain at bay.)

It's never gonna happen. The whole thing about light is that it goes off in all directions, I guess you could have a fucking powerful laser pointer, but that's about the extent of the power you would get.
Actually, the common theory is that Star Wars uses a lot of Plasma technology in both lightsabers and its ships.

The typical lightsaber hilt consisted of a metal cylinder between twenty and thirty-five centimeters in length. However, the size of individuals hilts varied drastically, as the weapon was tailored to the creator's specific needs and preferences. The lightsaber mechanisms were contained within the hilt. High levels of energy generated by a high-output Diatium power cell was unleashed through a series of focusing lenses and energizers that converted the energy into plasma. The plasma was projected through a set of focusing crystals that lent the blade its properties and allowed for the adjustment of blade length and power output. The ideal number of crystals was three, though only one was required.

Once focused by the crystals, the plasma was sent through a series of field energizers and modulation circuitry within the emitter matrix that further focused it, making it into a coherent beam of energy that was projected from the emitter. The blade typically extended about a meter before being arced by the blade containment field back to a negatively charged fissure ringing the emitter, where it was channeled back to the power cell by a superconductor, completing the circuit. Below is a list of the primary parts almost all lightsabers needed to use to function properly:

Lightsaber hilt
Pommel cap
Diatium power cell
Inert power insulator
Focusing lens
Lightsaber crystal
Emitter matrix
Blade emitter

Have it so that your super powered jedi can choose the shape of the blade not just the length, that way you can have the lightaxe as mentioned above as well as a light whip, light club or anything else you want.
how do you bend the light for the whip without mirrors? though interesting

Those lightsaber nunchucks are pretty cool, but otherwise I'm not a fan.
