Anyways, do my fellow Escapists have any thoughts on lighters?
I smoke a pipe, so I have a collection of Zippo's... the only problem is that I need to swap the mechanisms in them to the pipe one when I want to use it... A zippo pipe lighter looks like this:

So I have to swap the insides to the one I want to take that day!

I then have a belt buckle similar to this (But with a different design!):

I put my lighter in it when I go out... or know I am going to use it then! It fits any standard Zippo! :D

I don't really do much of anything that would justify owning a fancy lighter, I've just always wanted one.
Google "zippo tricks" and you'll have your reason.

For a while in my highschool those tricks were such a craze, half the class had a zippo even thought they didn't smoke.

The great thing about them is they have a wide range in difficulty: from pretty easy to professional magician level.

Just don't forget what mom said about playing with fire and keep an extinguisher near :)

I like Zippo lighters best.

I want to get one like this.

Ha!

That's an awesome lighter.

Ever since boy scouts, where they would never let me get that badge that allowed me to get a lighter (which was probably a good thing, in retrospect), I've wanted to get one.
Really? They handed out firem'n chits like they were candy ...
What can I say? I like fire... a lot.

EDIT: Sorry for double post.

Despite not really using a lighter for anything, I've always enjoyed just "flicking" lighters for the flame that they give. I may well be Hooch. And as everybody knows, Hooch is crazy.

What I want to know is how the flame on his lighter is so tall D:

I don't have a fancy one, but I always have a total of around five cheapo plastic ones in assorted coat pockets.
I don't even smoke, I just like it when the things burn. Also, I guess it's a conversation starter if you're on break and someone needs a light.

That's easy, you just take the metal bit off and turn the gear thingie as much as you can towards the + side.
Poor explanation, but 'tuning' those cheap lighters is real easy, we used to do it all the time as kids.

As for proper lighters, I have two proper Zippo lighters and some odd looking Monte Carlo souvenir lighter with a green flame or something.
I have absolutely no use for them apart for lighting incense or burning important papers, because it's far more entertaining than shredding, but I still like them. Like most of the stuff I have but don't need, it's a shame I can't justify getting more of them.

I've got a black standard zippo I use whenever I'm out on social functions to seem fancy when I smoke. Any other day though I just use gas station Bic lighters because they're reliable, last forever and are a hell of a lot easier to light in the wind than a Zippo.

I bought my ex an engraved lighter for his birthday. Some guy in a night club took it off him so I beat the dude up and got it back.

blech. They ruin the taste of my pipe tobacco or cigar, the chemicals change the tobacco. Matches for the win.

I just buy them. Crappy ones. You know, ones from gas stations and whatnot. As a smoker it is always safe to have at least two on you, you never know when another smoker is "Accidentally" going to walk off with one.

As for fancy lighters? I wouldn't mind owning a zippo or something but I have never had the spare cash.

Zippos are awesome, but I don't smoke anymore, nor attend bars to show off tricks, so it's kind of pointless. And damn if those things don't run out of lighter fluid fast. You don't even have to use it, just put it in your pocket for a couple days and blam, no more fluid. It became more of a hassle than it was worth. Still cool though.

My lighter collection:

From the left the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lighters are non-working "antiques", the 1st lighter is a once repaired Zippo and the 5th and 6th lighters are working butane lighters. #6 used to play a the Chinese national anthem (at least that's what it was trying to play) when you opened it but it is old and its speaker got damaged. It is also worth noting that I don't and have never smoked.

It burns green. I bought it in Amsterdam. I like it.
I can tell you like it from your expression. =D

Always wanted one of those windproof ones, I don't smoke or even need a lighter (not like I go camping or even know a substantial number of people who smoke) just always wanted one.

I have seen lighters melt metal really quickly, they must nommnomnom on fluid though!

I only have a cheap plastic lighter and I only use it when I'm bored so I can run my fingers through the flame...

What? It don't hurt if you do it quickly, although, the soot stains are still all over my fingers...

Got a collection of Zippos and Ronsons I've collected since I was a kid, personal favourite has to be my S.T.A.R.S. one though.

OK, I took one look at that picture and went straight to eBay to score one of those for myself. Thanks for the tip!

On topic: I own a brass Zippo. No decorations. Just plain, polished brass all around. Ironically, this is exactly what sets it apart - how often do you see a Zippo that DOESN'T have some fancypants design on the side?

Yeah. It's pretty cool.
Unfortunately I probably won't be able to afford one anytime soon because all my totally free, I have no real purpose for this, money goes to something somewhat related.

I think it is a male thing to want to have a fancy lighter and knife, even if we don't have a use for them.

My friend Had a really cool electric lighter. It was gray with a small square cover over where it would spark/flame. The cover would pop up when the button was half way down then the flame would start when the button was all the way down. It had a Cannabis leaf on the handle.

I still believe that no old American pickup truck is complete without a gun(rack), a few dents, and a knife and Zippo with the confederate flag on it in the glove box. It doesn't matter if your redneck or not, this is the complete set.

Since I got onto the topic of knives at some point, my friend recently got a butterfly knife and a knife in the shape of the batman symbol (dark knight styled) with dual blades that flick out (spring assisted) to the wing tips. It'd be awesome if it wasn't built so cheaply.
