- There's a constant timer going throughout the game: you have 13 days before the apocalypse (very Majora's Mask-esque). Traveling, fighting, even opening certain chests or choosing to be revived after losing in a fight will cost you precious time.
WHAT!? Put me completely off of the game. I don't mind that Lightening is the only playable characters, but DO NOT rush me when playing a game. It's why I've never played a dead rising. I like taking my time, grinding monsters, over-levelling, exploring - why are you taking that away from me?
Never finished 13 and never played 13-2 so I'm not gonna make a judgement call on this lest I be labelled an asshat. It at least sounds interesting. I do wonder if it's 13 in game days or 13 actual days. Probably the former.
One negative thing I will say is, why Lightning? I mean I get it, she's the poster girl for the 13 series but why? Why not have a new character since this seems to be pulling away from the rest of the series, what with it being hundreds of years in the future and all. And not bring in one older character with the somewhat tired handwave of timey wimey bullshit.
"Oh she's in this game because she was... pulled into the future from a time portal! Yeah that sounds good. Someone write that down."
OT: Never played either, but I'm watching an LP of 13-2 where the LPers are just taking the piss out of it while close to 100%ing it. It looks bad, I'll admit, but this sounds alright.
I almost finished XIII but got stuck so I watched an cutscene omnibus of the rest of the game. Which... didn't make much sense so I'll probably have to go back and watch a proper let's play, but anyway, after knowing the ending, I skipped part 2. This though? This sounds like something I can handle. Honestly, the moment I heard about the change in game style, it made me thing of Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. LOOK! NEW PLAY STYLE! WE'RE APPEALING TO THE WESTERN MARKET! PLEASE LOVE US.
That being said I like that decision. Also for those saying she's a bland character... yeah, that's EVERY Final Fantasy protagonist. Blandy McBlanderson, reporting for duty. I've always felt like the Final Fantasy games are more about the characters around you than you personally.
Combat sounds like an evolution of FFXII's which is EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I hated the fact that we had to go in and out of loading screens after every battle in 13. Pissed me off so much that I didn't finish the game. I'll openly welcome real time battles again
Well I'm reasonably interested in this. I enjoyed the previous two games, so I'm hoping this one shall be just as enjoyable. Not the best name however.

But I agree, the name isn't all that interesting and a little lame.
The only thing I'm a little curious/nervous about is the time limit thing since it's either gonna be linear like it was in the first one, not that linear is a bad thing, or there are some side stuff to do and you have to time them wisely.
Still, from the images they showed, the game does look pretty awesome.
I enjoyed FF XIII and XIII-2, and Lightning is easily my favorite character from that universe, so I would have been curious anyway, but the gameplay changes sound especially intriguing. I love watching each iteration change, but a decidedly action-oriented FF? Oh yes, very interested now.
I KNOW what they're doing, they announced Versus XIII so early to make hype for it, they're slowly evolving FFXIII into Versus XIII. Making people invest in the world and the characters so that when Versus does come around, you already care about that world hence making it even better, and with all the practise with new gameplay elements they will all go towards Versus.
It's been gradually growing more open as the games progress, yet Versus XIII has been said to be fully open-world. Lightning Returns is experimenting with open and living worlds, he said everything changes, weather, night and day, people's daily routines.....it's all telling the story of how Versus came to be. I imagine that we get Lightning Returns and a game about Noel, Hope and Sazh founding a new civilisation and when we get a Versus XIII-2 Snow, Fang and Vanille will pop up out of time and crystals and everything will be very cool and fun....maybe....
-Battle system has been overhauled, playing more akin to an Action-RPG with various skills mapped to the face buttons, the use of which will take portions of a non-segmented ATB gauge. Less aerial-combat focused than KH, and involves timed button presses ala Super Mario RPG for parries, blocks, counters, etc.
IGN's posted another article on LR:FFXIII, this time giving a few new details about how the game will work. Once again, for those that don't want to read the article:
-They've designed the game to encourage multiple playthroughs, and due to this the game will be shorter than its predecessors (the article says it won't even take tens of hours to complete, so less than 20 hours, perhaps?)
-Strangely enough, it only has one ending (it's a happy one at that)
-Each in-game day takes between 1 to 2 hours to pass
-Your actions in game will cause you to lose or gain time, thereby hastening or slowing your arrival to the end of the game
-Lightning will have Hope as a navigator, leading her through the world via wireless comm device
-The game will be "World Driven", so paying attention to how you interact with the world will be important
-The game is around 30% complete
So, this information is equal parts interesting and confusing. For one, a short FF game? Ye gods! What madness has befallen SE!? But I'm being honest when I say I kind of like that idea. I wouldn't mind sitting down and beating a FF game in a week or two as long as it had good replay value. Which brings me to a point that confuses me: only one ending, yet the game encourages multiple playthroughs? I can only assume, but does this mean that it'll be Heavy Rain-esque, in that our choices will shape how our playthrough goes so no two players will have exactly the same game? I'm not sure how I feel about that, although I do like the notion of our actions impacting the world, as long as its both dynamic and noticeable.
I do have one big question, though:
how the hell is Hope supposed to be her navigator when he got blinked out of existence just like everyone else at the end of FFXIII-2? I mean, I know at the end Caius turned the world into one without death (ie, Valhalla), so that could explain why Hope could still be alive, but at the same time didn't that effectively end the current existence of everything? Whatever--may as well let Toriyama 'fix' everything as best as he...well, nevermind. He'll do something, quality completely aside (readoorly).

And if Hope managed to survive, that would mean Sazh and Noel did too...but Lightning is strictly party-less, unless this means we also get guest allies. Honestly I couldn't care less about Lightning's story right now because
she's crystallized
and therefore safe, I really wanna know what happens to Snow, Hope, Noel and Sazh and whether they get Vanille and Fang back, Lightning and Serah are over for me.
