ok, I've played and enjoyed all three gears of war games. I've genuinely enjoyed them for the single-player campaign, and the story (flawed as it is). But I've come to the conclusion that I just don't care at all For Marcus Fenix.

Now, the other characters I love. their not exactly paragons of great character writing, but they had enough personality to keep me invested and excited. Doms tragedy, Bairds sarcasm, and Cole... just, well, being Cole, as well as Dizzy and Hoffman in 2 and Sam and Bernie in 3 (Anya... was kind of bland, Sort of like a female Marcus, just without being angry, and without some of his more irritating characteristics).

But Marcus just never did anything to make him stick in my mind. He was just, well, generic angry military guy who lost his dad. About the only thing I could honestly tell you about him with genuine interest is what other roles his voice acter, John DiMaggio did. And that a some of his behavior in 3 p***ed me off.(pretty much the same stuff Yahtzee covered Here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/9163-Manly-Vs-Macho-in-Gears], as well as his general refusal to re-evaluate his attitudes after certain revelations).

So.. is it weird that I enjoyed the game/story in spite of the 'focus' character, or have you found yourself in a similar situation?

I like the Devil May Cry games, but I'm not really a fan of Dante.

He's okay in the first game, the second game never existed and went straight to the third title where he was upstaged by his brother.

I haven't even completed DMC 4, I have it, Nero is a douche too.

I actually liked both Kane and Lynch games, but didn't like the main characters at all. I mean, they aren't even anti-heroes, they're just criminal punks with no redeeming qualities.

Well I think Marcus is supposed to be the grizzled vet that every nerd wishes they were, so a degree of blankness is required.

I kind of have a similer thing going on wiith Bayonetta. The campyness gives me a headache and the main character does nothing for me (slutty Mary Poppins). However I love the gameplay. I'd go as far at to say it's the best combat system for a brawler I've ever played. So much choice and options with which to be creative and a really high skill ceiling despite it's low entry level.

Whoever the lead from Vanquish was, about as cliche as you could get. Really annoyed me, nearly as much as grizzled vet person from same game who ate too much gravel.

Commander Shepard, only in the sense of it would be awesome if I could play as a Turian or Quarian the whole game.

Marcus Fenix in Gears 3 I didn't hate, but I loved playing as the cole train a hell of alot more. (OP, what about Carmine?!?!?)

EDIT: I got it, SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG /thread

Uncharted doesn't count because I hate Nathan Drake AND the game.

Didn't like Tidus from Final Fantasy 10, at all...
Kinda liked most of the other characters though.

Don't like Sora from KH either, only reason I played Chain of Memories is because I could play as Riku.

I had fun with the gameplay in FF10, but hated every single main character other than Auron, he was pretty cool

Micah from Fire Emblem: Radiant Path. Sorry Micah no matter how much you say your nation is in a poor state, it was that bloody crazy king of your nation that started the whole war in the first game therefore I don't not feel sympathy toward you at all.

Same here I dont exactly hate her but shes hardly likeable thankgod the gameplay was so tight and awesome because the characters in this game were awful, Bayonetta was actually the best and she wasnt very good.

Most create your own character games leave me detached from the main character as I know they are just some blank slate I made to slot in a story and so never really have a personality of their own just a borrowed one which stops me from liking or hating them, wont stop me playing the game though if I think I will enjoy it.

Theres also Soul Calibur V if you count Patroklos and Phyrra as the main characters which I will because the story is about them and they have two slots each on the character select screen, they are both terrible characters (not moveset wise but personality wise) I hope they dont get brought back for SCVI but SCV is great fun to play (in VS mode mainly).

This has happened to me a lot. While playing FPS or VNs, where the protagonist is just bland and boring, but the game's story or the other characters makes it worth it.

Hated Vaan and Penelo in FF12... they were super bland and boring at their best... and at worst annoying as hell... and worst is that they shouldn't have even existed in that game let alone been the "main characters"... seriously cut them out and the game is like 50 timesbetter at least... but I still enjoyed the game... mostly because it wasn't full of too much teenage melow drama that someone on the writing team confused with depth and conflict, characters designs weren't stupid looking, it had a good air of nonlineairty compared to a lot of other JRPGS, character building was actually really deep and supported a lot of options, and the combat was pretty solid allowing a lot of party control and options and had a good pace too it for strategy and action to mold together...<.<

While I did enjoy prototype despite it's numerous faults,

Alex Mercer is pretty much an unlikeable git.

Yeah agree with these two as well... though I didn't hate Sora, he just wasn't very interesting... and Roxas was generally beter... seeing as how he actually had depth to his character and was capable of emotion other than happy... Sora was too much of a good guy... and Roxas was voiced by Jesse McCartney, which I thought was hilarious... and total nostalgia trip there... back to the hey day of the boy bands... I.E. the early 2000's...<.<

ah, gotta love carmine, though A and B don't really get too much to do. (though I used A in multi and horde until 3.)

And I completely forgot about Jace! Nice guy really, just doesn't really stand out.
