TLDR.

Other than that, what do you hope to achieve by this? You've already called us all ignorant noobs (or something along those lines) for not knowing about some obscure bullet hell thing, am assuming this is the same sort of thing?

Think the horse has already bolted LS.

Congrats on having the time to do such a long write up about such an obscure gaming series though. One other thing I will say is that at least colors are used more wisely than that Megaman mod you posted. Still looks like a leprechaun barfed all over the screen, but at least it's an improvement.
It's not that obscure, there's a fairly large fan base for it. It's one of those niche games that got indie remakes/spin offs. Also, the girls in these games seem a bit too young for my taste

One of the Escapist mods is named after a Toehoe. True story.

Also, all hail Kisume.

its all..."Anime" like

*shudder* don't like anime....
It doesn't even look like good Anime. (Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Fireflies)
You realize those were all made by one studio, right? It's kind of close minded to say the only good anime is that which follows the very specific style of one studio. It's like saying Pixar's style is the only way to do character designs in CGI movies.
I didn't, but yeah I do see that. Though at the same time I really don't like any other animated movies that aren't made by Pixar.

Never really saw myself as closed minded though.

I liked Hood-winked! I'm not close minded! :(

What's to ask? It's my opinion. I didn't say that handicap people shouldn't find love, just that I'm not attracted to them.
Really? Then, imagine the girl you love has an accident and loses a leg, you stop loving her?
That is different from seeing a girl that is missing her leg and then going after her.

Btw you probably missed the point of Katawa Shoujo, even more probably you haven't even played it.
And what's the problem on hitting on handicapped?
I don't have a problem with a person being attracted to handicap people, I just don't find them attractive. Its like how some people like tall girls or short girls, regardless of which one your attracted to, your not "wrong".

Maybe, Japanese dating games don't interest me.

Screw the debates about anime. To hell with the debates about obscurity. In the name of Her Ladyship, Yukari Yakumo, I declare it Reitaisai awesomeness time! What have you guys been listening to, reading, and playing out of Reitaisai 9? Personally, I've been following mostly for the music, most of which has been pretty awesome.

Been listening to a bunch of stuff. Shibayan, Alstroemaria, Buta Otome, Pizuya's Cell, Crow's Claw, and Xi-On, among others. Here's some random awesome stuff.

ButaOtome's album is awesome, as expected. Ranko is probably my favorite singer on the Touhou doujin scene. A unique style.

Alstroemeria Records has its ups and downs, and Abandoned Dancehall is most definitely an up. One of latter day Minoshima's best, imo.

Crow's Claw isn't Demetori, but they still rock pretty damn hard.

That's the problem, the way you say it it looks like there's a problem with going after handicaped girls.
I will agree with Helmholtz Watson that I find the concept completely unattractive, like I have zero interest in playing it. Doesn't mean you or anyone who enjoys it is wrong, but your ability to do so does make you appear somewhat alien in my eyes. I suppose it is my loss for not being able to play a game which is considered good.

This. And I have to call absolute bullshit on the whole "most famous series of games out of Japan"
I said indie. The most famous game series out of Japan would obviously be Mario.

Of course, it's possible that in the English speaking world, Cave Story is the most famous indie game from Japan. But that's debatable. Either way, those are the two most famous. Touhou is definitely more successful in terms of money. People don't sell millions of dollars a year of Cave Story stuff.
Even the most famous indie game is bullshit. I have never even heard of people who have heard of it, in real life on the internet. I honestly had no idea what it was until you made that topic about it where you insulted everyone.
My brother's fraternity would play TouHou jazz remixes at the music at there parties. Although his social group was pretty obsessed with it. Anyway its got kind of a cult following. Kind of an odd game. I've tried it and didn't really like it. Its really stressful and personally I find it more frustrating than fun.

All that said, I don't see the point of this thread as it isn't exactly easy to get as it wasn't released outside Japan. Thats probably why you haven't heard of it. You sort of need to know it exists to play it. Its not like you will come across it on Steam like Cave Story. Most people who play it seem to pirate it but some import the games and set their computers region to Japan. So basically even if you want to try it, you are going to have a hard time doing it legally.

Touhou, huh?

I'm gonna be totally honest: I don't understand the hype behind the series, and try as I might, maybe I'm simply not supposed to understand it.

I've played the games, including the fan-works like "Touhouvania" and Super Marisa World, and the canon spin-offs such as Shoot the Bullet and Hisoutensoku. With the exception of only two games in the series (one of them being the aforementioned Hisoutensoku), I was not impressed. In the interest of time, I'll keep my complaints brief...

- The character designs are either unnecessarily gaudy (I don't know the names of the good examples) or painfully generic (Marisa, Sakuya). At worst, they're just flat out ridiculous (Utsuho). This image here [http://cache.ohinternet.com/images/d/d6/Satori_coincidence.jpg] covers my thoughts quite well.
- Most of the character's abilities are dubious at best ("manipulation of borders"? what the fuck does that even mean?!) and nonsensical at worst.
- Most of the characters come off as raving idiots (especially in the early Windows games, like Scarlet Devil Mansion).
- While not knocking ZUN's composition, the sound of the music is "eh" (admittedly, I can't get enough of the metal remixes. Crow's Claw, Demetori, and Iron Attack are fucking godsends).
- The games seem to put too much emphasis on trying to kill you until you memorize the shot patterns (then again, you might can say this for any bullet hell).
- etc etc

I really tried to get into this series outside of the random doujin of, say, Sakuya becoming a sex-obsessed vampire and for a certain gate guard's nookie blood. But like I said before, I just can't get into it. The above points are mine and mine alone - keep in mind I'm not saying the series is bad by any means, just saying that I'm not feeling it.

*Looks around slightly confused*

Can anyone help me find the point to this thread?

*Reads the OP, and the Wikipedia entry*

Nuts, I hate pointless threads that have more in common with people shouting from the rooftops

"THIS FPS SHOOTER IS TOPS!!!!" or whatever

*Walks out even more bored than entering*

Now, has anyone here actually bought any of the Touhou games? I would have bought them if it was legal to obtain an English copy.

Edit: Yeah, just as I thought, seems like no one here has bought a Touhou game and those who have played it, at least the english version, have pirated.

Anything outside of Japan that isn't clearly labeled with the Atlus or Final Fantasy logo is considered loli and avoided like shit here.
Remember when I have repeatedly stated I have a tipsy opinion of this site?

This is what I was talking about. I wasn't saying I have a low opinion of the Escapist because they haven't heard of something. I have been growing a negative opinion of the Escapist because of growing evidence pointing towards this being shoved in my face all the time. People even telling me, "don't you get the hint? The Escapist hates everything you like". That shouldn't impress me. And if what people are inferring or outright saying about this is true, then I would have to say I would think of the Escapist as the worst gaming culture on the net. Or at least to my tastes. And my own antithesis.

I've tried to ignore those assertions and have a higher standard of the Escapist than having horrible taste and being my antithesis. But I'm frequently disappointed. And then I say things, that sound, apparently, insulting. Why should I have a high opinion of the Escapist, though, if the quoted text is true?

I didn't say I have a low opinion of the Escapist because of not having heard of Touhou. I have a growingly negative opinion of the Escapist because of these suspicions and assertions that nobody challenges. Actually, why are either of us here then, VanQQisH? Because I don't want to be among people who think like you have described. I do not like people, like you have described. And therefor I do not want to assume that the Escapist, is what you have described. Because, I like talking about video games, and I don't know where else to go.

I'm not trying to insult anyone by saying that, either. I think that most people want to be around people they have things in common with. Aside from the fact I like Atlus, that is pretty much my antithesis. I like people who I have things in common with.

And this topic suddenly got way too serious and dark. And got me into saying things I didn't want to, when I just wanted to talk about and praise and spread information about Touhou. Even making a joke about religion in the topic title. Look at some of the responses, though, I don't think people want to joke and play and fun, when it seems clear they loathe everything I love. I bet there's a lot of people who want to turn this topic as badly as possible and get me more warn levels. How sad.

The thing is though, I can only really find someplace better to talk about what I like. Or keep talking about what I like here until it works.
In other words you're attempting to sway the opinions and likes of people on this site towards your own... Sounds pretty narrow minded to me. Moreover you expect to be welcomed with open arms while at the same time being relatively insulting (subtle insults are still insults) the intelligence of those who don't like or enjoy what you do. I don't know much about the games you were attempting to promote, but to be honest I don't really care. The thing that bothers me most is why in hell are you here? If you don't agree with the people who are part of this community, if you don't feel they're "up to your level" because they don't like obscure anime games involving little girls, what purpose does it serve to remain here?
Aren't there forums that cater toward you? I understand that you are trying to bring awareness to an obscure thing, but moreover you've a history of contempt for those who don't have your opinion which does deny you a lot of credibility.

Not all people don't share your opinions. Some might, but not everyone will and it would behoove you to learn tolerance for those who don't share your opinion. The wisest thing to do would be not to insult those who don't share your views especially if you're attempting to be part of a community comprised of people who don't.
Its fine to bring some awareness to something you love, but if people don't like it you'd be best off ignoring the more scathing replies and be happy you posted it. There are plenty of posts I've had where people don't agree with my view or what I like, and some have been downright insulting personally but they're a small portion (though pretty loud as all the small things in life seem to be... attention whores) of the Escapist population and thus don't matter to me. Well TBH no one on this site really matters to me at all; the only reason I'm even replying to this is because I'm bored.

Why are people up in arms over OP? I mean seriously, people specifically said they felt they are being insulted even before lilith says s/he has a low opinion of the site (which people then latched on to immediately to drag conversation down even futher) but I'm really finding it hard to pinpoint in OP a part that talks down to the audience.

Found it an interesting read into a side of gaming and more specifically japanese culture I had no clue about, and I didn't get the feeling I was being patronized or insulted whilst reading the OP.

To paraphrase someone from the first page: if that davestar guy copy pasted the exact same op, you'd all be have reacted in a far more positive manner.

Lilithslave, fuck the haters on this one is all I can say.

I tried it out with an emulator and didn't like it. Although I love anime this isn't for me.
