I have seen a number of previews and features about the first Xbox "Summer of Arcade" arcade game, Limbo, and I have to say it looks amazing. People say that Braid, Bioshock, and Shadow of the Colossus is art, but I have to say that this game may actually provide the first actual art game. What do you think about the game? When it is released this wednesday, feel free to share your thoughts here. Please NO SPOILERS if you somehow come across any, because I definately am looking forward to this game. For those of you who didn't even know it existed, look it up on youtube or something. It'll be worth it. Oh yeah, and its Xbox exclusive, so sorry to all you steam and ps3 gamers out there.

EDIT: As of friday afternoon after the release, I have yet to download the game, as I am currently somewhat lacking in funds, but I will post my thoughts when I do eventually get it. Although, I'm guessing this thread is practically dead now, isn't it?

Trying to corner the discussion by posting 2 days before its release huh? Good luck with that - you've been around long enough to witness the epic search bar failures that take place here, right?
OT: I'll be back Wednesday with my opinion...

It's getting a 92 on Metacritic, with Destructoid and GamesRadar giving it 10/10.

I'm actually a bit worried, as they say the game lasts maybe 4-5 hours, and is $15. But it looks absolutely incredible.

It looks amazing.. but I'm not sure I could justify that pricetag given the reported length. Also, outside of the striking visual style, it just doesn't look that "new." It looks a lot gameplay wise like the myriad of other puzzle platformers that make up a decent chunk of indie gaming.

Not exactly. Reading the review at gamesradar.com just got me really riled up, and I love games like these, sometimes even more than a new zelda or halo because they introduce gameplay ideas that are actually original. Not that that I don't love me some zelda of course. For example, Journey for the ps3 looks like its going to be incredible. Alas, I have no ps3 though... *cries*

I can't stand any type of trial and error game play- even if the game spawns you next to where you died.

I don't think that it will ultimately dethrone Braid at this point. A few reviews that I read stated that the ending did not wrap the story up well and the player is left confused.

Is this only counting origional games? If not, then no. If so then I dont know, and wont know.

Define art for us.

I think it LOOKS very cool, but it is essentially just a platformer isn't it? Though I haven't read much in-depth on it.

As for being the best Live Arcade game, I dunno' about that. It'll have to work real damn hard to beat out Castle Crashers. That game is disgustingly fun with co-op.

edit:
e. For example, Journey for the ps3 looks like its going to be incredible.
Holy shit doesn't it?! I'm going to steal my friends ps3 when it comes out. No friggin' way I'm missing that when it releases.

Well when I get to play it i'll get back to you.

It's going to be hard to beat Braid in my book but this game looks extremely interesting.

Define art? And do what no one else has managed to do since... ever? In the same way that you can't come up with a definition of art that excludes pornography, you can't define art in a way that excludes video games, if what you're saying is that video games can't be art, though I doubt that's what you're saying since this is the Escapist after all.

My definition of art?
Shit that's purdy

No, jk. In the context of vidya games, I guess it would be a game that leans more toward the basic message (what ever that might be) of the game, instead of the entertainment value. For example, sure Bioshock has mature themes like "what is free will" and bladeebla, but it seems that the game is more focused on being a game than a message, if you know what I am trying to say. Though I do love Bioshock as much as anyone.

Don't try to prove me wrong. I already know my logic is about as easy to "prove" as a belief in aliens or something, so no need to waste your breath... or I guess in this case your fingers or something.

I don't know about you but I'm a fan of Shadow Complex and Geometry Wars 2. I'm more interested in Blacklight Tango Down than Limbo I'm afraid. I can't see myself buying Limbo, there isn't enough color.

I wasn't trying to be all tricky here. You said "..but I have to say that this game may actually provide the first actual art game", and I wanted to know what you meant by that, so I could properly respond.

So essentially, a video game being art is a video game trying to get a message across? In which case I would say that if you think games like Bioshock or Limbo are some of the first examples I am afraid you're missing out my friend ;) I've read the destructoid review for Limbo and it sounds like it would definitely qualify under your (and my own) definition for art, but it certainly isn't one of the first. Games like Planescape: Torment, System Shock, Mask of the Betrayer, World of Goo.. it's joining a noble group at least :) I hope it does very well.

I apologize if I came off as confrontational, I was just asking for specifics.

Didn't we say the same thing about 'Splosion Man back in September? What about that 3-D Side Scrolling game that came out a little after that?

It looks neat, but I'll reserve my opinion until I get a chance to play the demo. And, at the moment I don't think I'll shell out $15 for it. It may eventually drop a little in price, and I might pick it up then.

Don't sweat it, I was merely stating my argument, albeit one that is completely sound in my mind at least :p

Besides, I'm not saying that all the games you mentioned weren't art, I'm just saying that in my opinion, Limbo is more "artsy" than, say, World of Goo.

Anyway, this thread wasn't supposed to be about art, just Limbo. Arguing about what art is is like arguing which religion is the right one, since it all boils down to personal opinion anyway.

BTW, it's awesome that you're pumped for Journey. I wasn't even sure if anyone even knew it existed.

I just saw it on XBLA. Since we (we being NZ) gets all the games later than the world I'm going to have to wait for it...

When you say best XBLA, do you mean XBLA exclusive, or any and all? Because I'm having tons of fun with Deathspank right now, and I love Braid, but the difference there is that they aren't exclusive.

Honestly, Limbo looks good, but not a game I could sit down and play for very long.

Are you thinking of Shadow Complex?
