Lindsay Ellis (Nostalgia Chick) to Leave Channel Awesome

Just a bit ago, Lindsay Ellis (of Nostalgia Chick internet fame) has posted a blog about her soon to be departure from Channel Awesome (formerly That Guy with the Glasses) and the Nostalgia Chick name, citing having never been fully comfortable with the premise and being burnt out.

This makes me sad, as I have greatly enjoyed her reviews (the older ones moreso since she didn't seem to take the whole thing so seriously), especially the ones that covered girly/woman targeted flicks such as What Women Want [http://chezapocalypse.com/episodes/nostalgia-chick-what-women-want/], The Worst Witch [http://chezapocalypse.com/episodes/nostalgia-chick-the-worst-witch/], and Kate and Leopold [http://chezapocalypse.com/episodes/nostalgia-chick-kate-and-leopold/]. However, this comes as no surprise to me since for the past few years she hasn't uploaded a whole lot, and even when she did she hadn't seemed all too into it.

Lately, I've noticed a pattern on the internet about that honestly. You'll start to see old names cycled out everywhere as people move on to new stages in life. Lindsay Ellis has been on the wall for a long while about her place on the internet, having moved passed small term videos to being in a position of a mainstream industry.
I personally felt her content was very hit or miss, preferring Nellie and the vampire girl to her own persona. The Escapist has lost a lot of content, TGWTG will soon lose or has lost many of their old staff (Ones like Jesu Otaku, bailing outright, and others like CR just fading slowly away. I don't know if this is actually because of there not being that much pay in it, or if there is a hidden reason, such as contributors falling away from the site do to hating each other).
The only thing you can do is hope they fill in the gaps with new content that doesn't hurt their site, Channel Awesome's new names are very hit or miss ( I was greatly happy with Thug Notes, and it didn't make it. I'm less interested in the guys that just do anime or video game reviews that have no real showmanship quality to their videos).

We're looking at a new internet guys, one where the 2009-2013 era critics and personalities are going to start in their personal projects, and let's hope that the new faces that step up have a fresh bag of tricks.

Wait, what? I knew she wasn't making too many reviews lately, but this feels kinda sudden... Considering that the Nostalgia Chick's been with Channel Awesome for a while, it'll be weird not seeing her name on the producer list.

This seems to be a trend nowadays, with many well-established reviewers moving on to new things. As for the new faces on the site, the only ones I regularly watch are Some Jerk With a Camera and SFDebris (though being a long-time fan of the latter helps). Still, I'm not opposed to a few new faces, though.

All that being said, I wish her the best of luck with her future projects.

its not so much a cut off from CA that I have an issue with because honestly I just go blip/Chez apocalypse now

but having less videos? yeah I don't like that

though Chez did indicate she was drifting off on her own somewhat, I don';t think she'll stop completely what with BYOA feeling relatively new AND still having a lot of steam in it

although whatever she does next it seems she'll stick with her analysis and such..which is what I liked her for anyway

Well ok. Not the biggest deal if you ask me. She has always been kind of hit or miss with me. As long as Todd is still there I'll still watch. But I've always liked "joking about making a joke." And he dose that rather well. It's also one of the reasons I like Jon Stewart and John Oliver.

The joke is that Spoony is making nearly 6k a month through Patreon, plus the ad money on his videos, and he still barely produces anything. Compare it to people like the Nostalgia Critic and Linkara, who are keeping to a weekly schedule PLUS doing a lot of side-content on top of that. What does Spoony do? One review every two months, a scant few Vlogs about wrestling and RPGs and now apparently he is making a movie, because that is not going to backfire on him like every movie any other internet reviewer made, amirite?

I mean, I love the guy and I periodically re-watch his older reviews and I even like his Counter Monkey episodes, but seriously?

Although, to be honest, Linkara's recent announcement of an AT4W movie makes me considerably worried about him as well...

I think a lot of it had to do with her fans. She did lead a firebombing campaign against TvTropes because the creeps on their forums kept making sexual comments about her and being unable to differentiate her theme reviews from her real personality. It was honestly pretty funny.

As for Lindsay, she did break into mainstream journalism about a year and a half ago if I'm remembering right, so leaving CA is no big loss. Honestly, a lot of these shows and content creators only go to CA to get secondary exposure from Doug Walker, and if they can make it on their own, there is no reason to stick around that website, especially with Patreon and Blip around.

Well, that's a bit of a shame; she was one of my favourite contributors there. But I suppose it's good to know that, even if she's leaving Channel Awesome and the Nostalgia Chick label behind, she won't stop making video content completely. While I can't say I know her, it's no surprise...

I can't imagine doing something consistently for years on end where you take on the same role and do the same thing can really be that great long-term.

Don't get me wrong, there are people that do it. News Readers, Soap stars and many others...

But sometimes, it just leads to burnout. And there's nothing worse (both for the individual, and their audience) to watch someone who clearly has lost interest in what they are doing...

I suppose contributors will just keep leaving TGWTG, and new ones will come in to replace them. It's been around for a while, after all, so creators might just be getting sick of the site itself, for whatever reason.

I don't think the "reviewing bad things" genre is over, but the focus and berth of what that means might be. The next installment of reviewers won't have the same background as what we have now, so a lot of stuff we find nostalgic will be seen as garbage and mocked savagely (and not lovingly), also I've noticed a pattern of more and more reviewers using "who cares, it's my list" and "did not do the research" mentality when it comes to reviewing.

I, actually can answer that. The lack of knowledge and nostalgia from the 80's-90's era. Rarely is someone pulling into their 30s or better going to jump into the fray as a reviewer, and pull the same kind of draw as those in their early twenties. There's usually far less energy to their reviews and skits, and they tend to compare new works to stuff from their childhood, which is increasingly going from nostalgic to downright ancient every passing day (Kanye fans not knowing who one of the Beatles was, for instance).

New wave reviewers are going to draw from elements of 2000s television and music when trying to design and lay out their personalities and it'll show. You'll get more "mainstream" review sites enlisting more of the "scream and froth" reviewers(like how Markiplier, and let's players and stuff are), and 80s cartoons will start to go from what used to be seen as cheesy and campy but fun, to inept and broken.

You're going to see content awareness drip down too, as you see less reviews working in a general sense, and just focusing on the one or two specific likes they have (Not just an anime reviewer, but shojo only).

The bask in it now my friends, because anyone who is 20 now, is going to feel down right alien when watching reviews after the next few years...

Aww...well, if she's still doing videos, that's cool. Have to admit, I haven't really followed her work for a long time (I think the only CA person I do that for any more is Todd, though I've been trying to catch up with the Rap Critic as well), but it's still kind of a ping to the nostalgia.

...actually, I'm gonna need to go through the new site and see how many people I remember from the first few years aren't there any more. Might make rewatching Kickassia and Suburban Knights kind of awkward in some cases, admittedly.

Ah it seems the trend of people leaving Channel Awesome just keeps growing. What with Patroen and other things like it why wouldn't people want to leave?
Also, like Jesuotaku, she's had other bigger projects going on in her life and the persona was probably a distraction from them.

Lindsay's case is particularly interesting to me because her Nostalgia Chick persona, whose whole idea was to be a female version of Doug, did contradict with her changing ideologies and her growing individuality. I think this is frankly a good move on her end.

At least she's still going to do stuff, and I'm happy there's no drama but for actual professional and positive reasons. I enjoyed Lindsay's content a lot, but starting from her video drought, I haven't been able to catch a lot of her smaller stuff. She also tends to hit a good balance of informative videos while still being light and entertaining.
