Licensed music in in games in variety of ways. They can be used in trailers, they can be part of the in game soundtrack or maybe they're just being used as ambient sound. Either way, we sometimes find that song that we simply can't be satisfied to hear only in relation to the game, we need to be able to listen to them at any time. And this here is the thread to talk about those songs.
For me, a few I've found was:

You Think I Ain't Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionaire - Queens of the Stoneage, from the intro cutscene to Jak X.

This Is The New Shit - Marilyn Manson, from the "Violence" trailer for Dragon Age Origins.

Alone And Forsaken - Hank Williams, from one of the trailers for The Last of Us.

Sleepyhead - Passion Pit, Reveal trailer for Little Big Planet 2.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band turned me o to quite a few bands.
(Priestess, The Sword, Living Colour to name a few)

"Compass" from Red Dead Redemption sent me on a frantic search to find everything by that artist.

Hush, by Deep Purple thanks to Spec Ops: The Line, as well as Jimi Hendrix's cover of The Star Spangled Banner, which plays over the main menu.
That game's got a great soundtrack. The dev team must have had a great time putting it all together.

I became a fan of "Paramore" after hearing their music on Rock Band and then Saints Row 2. Rock Band has made me fans of a lot of new bands but Paramore is the only band I actively went out and purchased a CD for after hearing them. I really have no clue why that is...

I love the licensed music in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. My favorite song there is Cain by Tiamat.

Burnout 3 had such a good sound track and introduced me to Rise Against (who are now one of my favourite bands), New Found Glory, Autopilot Off and a few more who I can't remember off the top of my head. Such good music for driving like a lunatic, doing traffic and ramming your opponents into a truck.

I remember other Burnout games also having good soundtracks, I just can't recall any specific ones at this moment.

Damnit now I wanna play Burnout 3.

Apart from the great Cage the Elephant from Borderlands.

I found Nico Vega from a Bioshock infinite trailer (Crazy good rock, look up Beast);

Stealing sheep from a Tearaway trailer (These girls are a pretty good folk band);

Jose Gonzales from Red Dead Redemption;

And there is probably a lot more.

And already a couple of my original answers have been ninja'd.

So I'll go with Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy introducing me to Theory Of A Deadman. There has been plenty more besides, but this is probably the one that has been the most 'important' so to speak, since Theory Of A Deadman are now one of my favourite bands.

And while I was introduced to The Heavy before Borderlands 2, I can see a few people at least saying that.

Hm, most of those I know but some of the goth bands in Bloodlines were really cool. Overall I disapprove of licensed music but it was spot on in that game.

The game's soundtrack by Rik Schaffer was awesome as well.

When I was younger, I was introduced to Static-X via an old Duke Nukem game (Time to Kill?). While I've since moved on to metal musically, I still find that kind of cool.

On the PS1, Test Drive Off Road featured some licensed 90's music that was enjoyable, Diesel Boy, Blink-182 and Eve 6 were introduced to me there.

I never got into the band that much but I sat there in my little virtual living room and listened to Santa Monica [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm0_KhOBJiY] about a million times.

Brütal Legend turned me onto Manowar [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFVs7bDbZxY]. They're cheesy as hell but still pretty awesome.

Bad Religion's 'You' [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQMRAW6m2WI] from Tony Hawk 2.

That's all I can think of at the mo'.

So, so many.

A LOT of artists from Burnout 3. That game had the most kickass soundtrack of any game ever. Notable standouts are Motion City Soundtrack, Autopilot Off, Rise Against, Sugarcult and Yellowcard

30 Seconds To Mars from the Dragon Age Origins trailer

Poets Of The Fall from Max Payne 2, who have gone on to become my favourite band

Theory Of A Deadman from Fahrenheit

Cage The Elephant from Borderlands

The Faunts from Mass Effect

Lisa Miskovsky through Mirrors Edge. I loved that main theme

Imagine Dragons from the Assassins Creed III launch trailer

Archive from the Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer

Godsmack from Prince Of Persia: Warrior Within

I think those are the ones I can think of from the top of my head

Mafia II [http://mafiagame.wikia.com/wiki/Mafia_II_Soundtrack] /thread. From Bing Crosby to Dean Martin, chances are all your favourite traditional pop musicians are on there. Except Sinatra.

And of course, the golden example. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvIuht69IPA] Licensed trailer music at its best.

Been ninja'd with Ain't no Rest for the Wicked and The Heavy from both Borderlands games.

I've also found heaps of good songs from Tony Hawk games. The first THPS game introduced me to Goldfinger's Superman which is still one of my favourite songs.

HELL YES. I beat that game after around 40 hours and my trigger fingers were cramped. Every time I drove in real life I got a nervous twitch. The world seemed different, not slower, it just looked strange to me. I finished that game and the song Congratulations Smack and Katy came on over the credits. It was the best ending to a game for me, right up there with Mass Effect 1...
JUST FUCKING PERFECT!
HELL YEAH, THAT FREAK IZZE IS RIGHT!

This. Not only a good song but a very solid band. Bit of a shame that song got removed (for licensing reasons I suspect)in the most recent fan mod I played.

I would also add 'M4, Pt. II' by the Faunts which plays over the end credits of Mass Effect.

The Duskfall had a song on one of the TV channels in The Darkness. But most licensed music I hear ends up being in trailers. And they're usually cover of older songs. And I know all of them.

Oh, and As I Lay Dying from Saint's Row 2 metal radio station.
