Ninjat_126's List of "Noobish", Unfair and Game-Breaking FPS Tactics

1) Camping (Especially Spawn Camping)
Sure, you might be having fun with your high powered sniper and your dark corner. But we're hating you right now. And just to be clear: Spawn camping is NOT part of ANY game and NEVER will be, it is nothing more than a disruptive and crappy tactic to unfairly win a game.
...
Fixed it for you
Thanks! That fits my basic sentiment more than my original post. I'm adding it to the OP now.

No point in putting up my own list because someone will take issue with it and either say "You just suck at the game, stop complaining", or "It's a legit tactic" (please read the previous sentences in the whiniest voice imaginable for full effect.)

Suffice it to say, there are some things people are doing that I did not see being done even five years ago, and it is starting to make me wish multiplayer games would go away for a bit.
I'd like to see a bigger focus on singleplayer in FPS games. Multiplayer is fun, but isn't enough to stand a whole game on unless it's co-op or something like an MMO.

Wait so if I'm good enough to kill you by making a headshot without looking into my scope cause I play shooter games till the disc burns out I'm cheating or unfair?
No, if you're that good it's probably a legitimate kill. It's just that the high damage output of snipers in games like COD make it possible to fluke a one-hit-kill shot with alarming regularity, rather than really occasionally in other games where only headshots will OHK.

Camping might be legitimate but by God, it's cheap and BORING. I think less of people who just play for the easy kills, camping a doorway and waiting with a shotgun. What's the point? Go play a rythym game if you're just waiting for something to pass through your crosshair. At least people won't wish impotence upon you.

Ninjat_126's List of "Noobish", Unfair and Game-Breaking FPS Tactics

1) Camping
Sure, you might be having fun with your high powered sniper and your dark corner. But we're hating you right now.
NB: This mostly only applies in TDM and FFA game modes.

EDIT:
1) Camping (Especially Spawn Camping)

Sure, you might be having fun with your high powered sniper and your dark corner. But we're hating you right now. And just to be clear: Spawn camping is NOT part of ANY game and NEVER will be, it is nothing more than a disruptive and crappy tactic to unfairly win a game.
Thanks to doggie015.

2) Quickscoping/Noscoping

A quick/no-scoper can get off a single shot in the time it takes most SMG/AR users to fire a single shot. However, the no-scoper's single shot will kill you if it connects, unlike the other player's gun which takes multiple shots.
NB: This is technically a legitimate strategy and at least puts you on the battlefield with the rest of us mere mortals, unlike camping.

3) Dolphin-Diving/Drop-Shotting

If your hitbox drops to a crouch/prone before your character model does, you'll have to be really unlucky to find someone who can hit you. Fairly common in the Battlefield games.
NB: Not all games have this hitbox problem and the hitbox is actually in sync with the player model. In which case, this is just another bullet avoidance technique.

4) "Noobish" Weapons

Using weapons that are unbalanced, overpowered or just plain unfair will help you get kills, but won't help you make friends. Examples include the "Noob Combo" from Halo.
NB: These are the sort of things that will generally get patched rather quickly, or fixed in sequels.

5) Glitch Exploiting

Glitch abuse includes noclipping into rocks, climbing the skybox and basically exploiting any loophole they can.
NB: These aren't meant to be in the game. If you find a way to hide inside the rock, don't.

6) Hacking

The Holy Grail of players being complete assholes. Granting you unlimited ammo, homing bullets, indestructible skin and the like, as well as cheating everyone else out of a fair game.
NB: Players caught doing this will usually be banned or have their accounts deleted.

I just posted this on the Bethesda forums, wondering if our fine community of Escapists have anything to add or correct.

EDIT: By "Noobish Weapons", I mean things like an Assault Rifle in a World War 1 game. Unbalanced, a bit out of place and completely unfair to anyone trying to play the game with anything else.

EDIT 2: I'm judging this from the point of view of someone out to play some games and have fun, not someone trying to get a huge K/D and a spot on the leaderboards. In my personal opinion, FPS games are more fun when everyone mixes up their tactics and weapons a bit, rather than sticking with whatever they think is the best and kill-farming.
I laugh how people ***** at campers with sniper rifles, as if it's designed for running and gunning.

For the sake of it, a pistol with a muzzle velocity of 500m/s, zeroed at 25m, with foresight 2cm above centre-line of barrel, gives:

Lead on man running at 5m/s:
10m: 10cm
25m: 25cm
100m: 1m
200m: 2m

Drop from barrel line:
10m: 2mm
25m: 12.5mm
100m: 200mm
200m: 800mm
300m: 1800mm
400m: 3200mm
500m: 5000mm
600m: 7200mm
700m: 9800mm

Line of sight below to barrel:
10m: -7mm
25m: 32.5mm
100m: 110mm
200m: 240mm
300m: 370mm
400m: 500mm
500m: 630mm
600m: 760mm
700m: 890mm

Bullet fall below sight line:
10m: 9mm
25m: 0mm
100m: 90mm
200m: 560mm
300m: 1430mm
400m: 2700mm
500m: 4370mm
600m: 6440mm
700m: 9010mm

Diagram, different scale from before to get it all in:

I remove any and all complaints on this score than.

Snipers are going to be snipers whether they're hiding up a crane or in a dark corner. If there's a sniper rifle in the game, you are going to encounter campers.

But people who spawn-camp in order to get easy kills... that's just being a dick.

In the old days of item pick-ups, you can pretty much assume that someone is going to be covering the best weapons and power-ups... and I always thought that was in-bounds. The newbie who can't get hold of a rocket launcher is much less likely to quit, then the newbie who is endlessly getting killed moments after spawning. In the first, you're playing the game (badly) and you need only *stop* going for the rocket launcher to no die quite so often. In the second, you're just dying without being able to play and that's never any fun.

I disagree with 1a, 2, and 4. They are part of the game. Camping is a sniper's job, you aren't a good sniper if you don't camp. Quick and no-scoping are also part of the game. The object is to shoot the other guy in any way the game allows, even this. Also, even if there are cheap weapons, it's your job as the player to counter that tactic with a better tactic, being mimicking their loadout or coming up with something that trumps it.

So basically you hate anything that kills you? Nothing is really considered "noobish" unless you take it in an offensive manor. Honestly, I have never seen a hack or glitch in a shooter. Also, your "Noobish" Weapons is more of a "Weapons that get the most kills", I'm certain that if you use it enough and get enough kills people will say your assult rifle is "noobish" as well.
I agree.

To the OP: I think the only viable complaints on your list are Glitch Exploiting and Hacking. Also possibly the quick scoping thing.

IMO the rest are annoyances that wind you up when you are killed. Though, I think that is part of the game.

I just left a game of black ops when some guy was crying in CAPS about 'is that all you do? CAMP?' To which I replied, 'It is called defending my teams FLAG, you ****'.

The one thing that I can think of not on your list, is 'bunny jumping'. This is horrendous in COD4 and anything else afterwards (in that franchise).

I think this is an obvious flaw in the code to allow you to raise your weapon faster when you are in the air than if you were sprinting on the ground. Thus, leading to the two fold advantage of jumping round corners:
(1) the speed and surprise of your movement makes the opponent falter his aim (though I consider this legitimate)

(2) you lift your weapon up faster than you opponent (say he was running to the corner, his iron sight will take longer to lift up from a sprint). When coupled with (1)... the game is half fecked.

It's a gamer's job to get better at the game, but you shouldn't all have to mimic one loadout to have any chance of winning.

Apparently, one of the biggest problems with CoD:WaW's multiplayer was that rifles were useless. Now that might be realistic (A weak SMG will beat a weak bolt-action 9/10 times), it's not good for balance in a video game. As such, anyone wanting to use rifles as a class will be at a disadvantage from day 1, making an entire weapon class useless. (I haven't played it myself though, this might be exaggerated.)

Imagine if a games company released an FPS where the shotgun had a effective range of 50 or so meters in a game where most of the action took place at 20m. They'd be unstoppable killing machines with no real downfalls. A truly good player would be able to still play well using other things, but everyone else's at a disadvantage.
