When's the last time you listened to music? I don't mean the last time music was on and you were able to hear it, I mean the last time you actually sat down specifically to listen to something, and did nothing other than listen until it was done. Listening to music quite a different experience than simply hearing music is.

Right now I'm coming upon the end of Ayreon's The Human Equation. If you're just hearing the music, it's a lot of really well made songs, and that's all well and good. If you actually sit down to listen to it, though, you notice that it's crafted in such a way as to chronicle the mental struggle of returning to consciousness after being put in a coma.

So what music do you hear, and what music do you listen to?

I love listening to prog rock and 80's power ballads with my headphones on. I shut my eyes and just enjoy the music, might do it now actually

Since my old car got firebombed, I've been going through my old cd collection from my highschool days, cuz that's all my "new" car plays. So lately, old Metallica, Megadeth, White Zombie, Sevendust and Godsmack, to name a few. It's funny listening to music I haven't listened to in years and seeing how much better or worse it seems.

Edit: I listen to music every day, without fail. Musicians are funny that way.

Yesterday. That's the only way I ever listen to music. If I'm not paying a large portion of my full attention to music I don't bother playing it at all.

Maybe some instrumental music or something mainly about complex awesome guitar (power/thrash metal) I'll have while playing video games. But usually if the lyrics are important and well written I'll be too focused on them as well to multitask a lot.

Yesteday. I started up a playlist with the 3 gymnopedi by Erik Satie and then laid myself on my bed, so I could just listen to it, and relax.

I do often go one walks and other less thought provoking activitys for the purpose of just listening to music. Earlier today I sat down and listened to Ara batur by Sigur Ros, Three Steps to Heaven by Miles Davis and Haitian Fight Song by Charles Mingus.

I frequently listen to music on my laptop right before I go to bed, and I sometimes spend about an hour switching through songs in shuffle mode on my ipod when I wake up on Saturdays (the only day I can sleep in), but that's pretty much the extent of my dedicated music listening time.

I'm never just listening to music. At the same time, I'm almost always listening to music.

I listen to music almost constantly, but the last time I really listened properly was a couple of days ago. Sat down and listened to an Agalloch album from beginning to end. I think it was Ashes Against the Grain. The only time I really get to listen to music is right before bed, because there's nothing to distract me.

All the time. I had one a playlist that alternates between old rap and electric music.
It went:
Straight Outta Compton-N.W.A
A Thing for Me- Metronomy
Changes- 2Pac
One More Time- Daft Punk
Definition- Mos Def and Talib Kweli
I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes- Tom Vek

And so on. After a while I go back to shuffle.

Does playing an instrument count? If not, then probably around 2-3 days ago.

Music is always in the background of my life. However, that doesn't mean that it is just there like some kind of white noise to be ignored. I always pay attention to the music that is on. Even as I am writing this I am playing attention to all the parts of the song that I am listening to.

I never do that. I find listening to music, without doing anything else at all, horribly boring. I often have music running in the background though.
