You could always get the type of custom earlplugs DJ's use, they are pretty expensive, but they are also fairly subtle and they don't lower sound quality at all (after all DJ's need to hear the music).
Seeing as you are in the US I couldn't say how exactly you'd get them, but in the UK it requires getting a mould taken of your ear which they can use to customise them to fit you properly.
I wouldn't feel embarrassed about it, it's no exaggeration that you can permanently damage your hearing pretty easily. DJ's and musicians use them all of the time.
