............................... Ha. ... . I know for a FACT regardless what the game is based on, people will try to see if the anime girls react to 'boob touch'. You know, hands or the fingers circling around the chest area. I'm calling it now. I'll bet anyone my entire bank account people will attempt it.
We could just make doing that an automatic game over? 'S one solution off the top of my head.

Wow. That a very interesting technology. I mean, it's a clever combination of existing techniques, but still...

In fact, I could really do with something like that. Setting up a character that way would save me a lot of time for one of my main projects at the moment.

Currently I'm using the same (or one of a handful) of static drawings for it, and I was contemplating creating a 3d model instead, but that has a different effect stylistically...
I need something where I can do basic character animations really quickly, and since this appears to be modifiable in realtime, and work with at least some 3d movements, it could help a lot. (For my purposes, I don't have a lot of time to do any given project, so I have to be able to pump out animation sequences really quickly if I'm to be able to use them at all.

So... This is quite interesting...

Useing it for sexy time stuff? Gross. Talk to me when we can use this technology to make me feel like I really am brutally murdering someone.
Sums up the hypocrisy of most reactions.

OT: Power to em. If they can create another form of rendering to create new art styles in games then that's an epic win.
If they wanna diddle their 'waifus' while they're at it, more power to 'em.

What's an Eldar?
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Eldar

Basically uppity space elves. They once possessed a vast interstellar empire that lasted millions of years. Unfortunately for them, their arrogance and hedonistic practices inadvertently created the Chaos god Slaanesh, whose birth cries and subsequent rampage almost wiped them out.

The lesson to be learned? Never trust xenos.

If they ain't careful, those Japanese fellers are gonna go the same way the Eldar did with all their hedonistic delights.
What, kill the Teleri and steal their ships to continue on a quest for vengeance against some jackass and his sidekick spider?

Or did you mean those "other" Eldar?
Whichever one has lots of sex, violence and hedonism in space.

I don't see why people are freaking out about this. It's not harming anyone and it's an interesting way to develop and demo the tech. It will also make back the money from development so investors are gonna be happy about it. It's clever, if anything.

About the people worrying about it being creepy, who cares. You're probably never even going to encounter anyone that uses it outside of Japan.

I would actually like to see how they could use this in Visual Novels to give the characters a bit more life. Have their faces and body languages reacting would be interesting and a good first step for developing this technology for use in other genres.

Hell, another interesting thing being developed by Sony as a tech demo for their Project Morpheus VR headest is Summer Lesson.

As far as I see it, we're in the early stages of creating actual VR technology not far from the stuff we see in fiction. And that excites me. In my opinion, if this is the worst that the technology has to offer then the ends justify the means. Let Otaku have their 2D waifus because their money is gonna fund the awesome VR hack'n'slashes and MMOs of the future.

Well, that's not to say that the original Middle Earth Eldar aren't also hedonistic assholes. See above regarding Nolder killing Teleri.

I know people are going on how creepy this is, but you know what? The video isn't actually creepy.

In fact, the only thing I came across that has creepy implications of any kind is in the EULA I found when I downloaded their existing program. (The software to make animations with is free for certain limited uses by individuals and small businesses)

Specifically, this:

5.1.8
Customer may not use the Software to develop or Publish Derivative Work or produce materials that are unlawful under the laws and social conventions of the country in which you reside, install or use the Software. Such Derivative Work and materials namely include but not limited to associating display of obscene objects, child prostitution, child pornography, and any other that violates laws and regulations aimed to protect child;
(section bolded by me for emphasis)

Now, not wanting to be associated with that kind of stuff isn't creepy, sure. But feeling that you need to specify that in your EULA...

Yeah... That's kinda creepy... >_>

It definitely tells you something about what kind of people they expect might be using a tool like this... >_<

Well, killing people for their ships is getting on the right track, but when you say "hedonistic", I expect orgies, grapes and cenobites.

Ain't nothing like the real thing. Still, if this is what's hot in Japan then I imagine it'll end up selling quite well, inevitable jokes aside.

Stuff like this has been around forever, except before it didn't have touch screens associated with it.

"Now I can have my own waifu; one less reason to leave my house, ever."

See what you're doing, Japan? You complain about people never leaving their houses and becoming shut ins, but you're creating those shut-ins with more reasons to, well... shut-in.

The technology is cool, but the purpose it's being used for - and will primarily be used for. Don't even lie - is counter productive at best, and a massive waste of potential.

The Eldar are a race of space elves from the Warhammer 40,000 Universe that got so hedonistic and depraved that their lewdness brought forth the Chaos God Slaanesh, the Prince of Pleasure, who then devoured the souls of most of the Eldar race in it's moment of creation. Eldar is also a name for the Elves in Tolkien's stories given to them by the Vala.

Edit: Damnable ninjas!

Okay, can someone hand me a cup of the kool-aid you all must be drinking, because I'm not seeing what the big deal is.

Not about the creepiness factor, I don't really care about that. People are going on about how this is some awesome new animation technique and a massive leap forward for VR and completely amazing, except... it's not? Perhaps I'm missing something, but it seems like they're just layering illustrations on top of each other and rigging it to a 3D model. Hell, you can see them doing as much at 0:43 in the second video. It's... not all that amazing, it's just a smoother version of a technique that's been around forever (Or atleast, been around as long as, like, flash animation has) All those awkward animations that are obviously a bunch of sketches tacked together and "animated" are doing the same thing, they just don't account for drag and physics as much. Or... at all, really.

I dunno, it's neat but hardly a great step forward, even in the realm of 2D animation. I'm still far more interested in Disney's Meander (The same software used to make the Paperman short) Though I suppose that's not as interesting to this forum given that Meander's aiming to recreate Disney hand-drawn animation and not an anime style, much less being developed for use in video games.

Well that seems pretty normal compared to other stuff coming from Japan...

Like Vocaloid and the huge amount of fans this 'music' has over there.
Or this 3D hentai nonsense for the Oculus Rift. I think something with 3D maid in its name? Trust me, you don't want to know what that is.

In theory that Live2D is nice technology that doesn't has to be necessarily used by that pervy stuff... It can find its way in any Oculus Rift game using a cartoony look.
But yeah. It'll end in hundreds of dating simulations and what not.
