What does your immediate region offer to the dinner table that is unique and hard/impossible to find elsewhere?

For me, Saskatoon Berries. Delicious pies, crumbles or just eaten on their own. Makes for good jam too!

Well, what about your area?

We have lots of cheap Heart of Palm, which makes for amazing dishes. Truly a delicacy, and quite hard to find elsewhere (the real good and soft ones, at least).

Also, a plethora of tropical fruits not known outside South America.

It's pretty easy to find horse meat here. Seriously, it is illegal and all, but it is very easy to find some in the underground market in west TN.

Wow... to much to enlist, right now i can remember:

Tamales, Chiles en nogada, pan de muertos, charales, arroz con leche, longaniza, chorizo, pozole, huaraches, mole de olla, nopales, pancita, tlacoyos, cajeta, molletes, rollos de guayaba, guacamole, mole de guajolote, barbacoa, mixiotes, tinga, tortas ahogadas, girngas, birria, ate, carnitas, corundas, champurrado, tlayudas...

no wonder we mexicans are fat SOBs. I am not sure if it counts though, most of them can be found in at least 1 more city.

Fry Sauce [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fry_sauce]

The only problem is that it's not impossible to find. All you need to do is combine ketchup and mayonnaise.

That's combining two of my most hated condiments into one! D:

*hisses and crawls back into non-ketchup/mayo corner*

Cinnamon roles made by a local Amish community. I've never had the pleasure of eating one, but they are supposed to be the next best thing to having sex with Keira Knightley on top of Kate Beckinsale.

Sorry, but Saskatoon Berries are not even close to actually being local to saskatoon :p Can't comment on what you do with them as I've never tried, but the berries themselves are rather common everywhere west of you.

That's the way the Amish bake them. They're well-versed in that particular situation, but it's a little-known fact.

OT: Erm.. Irish food.. Guinness stew can be pretty damn good.

Chicharones probably in my area. They're usually a mexican thing though, so there are plenty of places to find them but I find the little 'hole in the wall' restraunt I work at to do them just right.

For those who don't know Chicharones are fried pork rinds.

At my place we fry them enough so that they come out flaky but still firm, but fall apart in your mouth as you bite into them....heavenly....

God I feel fat....but happy *munch munch*

Snake.

Rattlesnake, specifically.

Did I say it was good? No. We just have it here in Texas.

Let's see... Norway... What do we have to offer? Hmm. Oh!

And

And

A sheep's head, fish cooked in lye and some porridge.

I don't care for our "delicacies", to be honest.

Red beans and rice (and none of that spicey a$$ Popeye's crap), jambalaya, gumbo, alligator, a whole mess of stuff here in Louisiana. I've even got a friend born and raised on the bayou most of her life. and the fry sauce, that's basically Cane's sauce without all the spices in it.

OT: what is central scotland known for...
the only local 'delicacies' i can think of a Buckfast and chips.

Horse meat? Illegal? What the hell? You can find it in almost any grocery store over here.

Umm, a pie floater? It's basically a meat pie floating in mashed peas. I don't even know what South Aussie delicacies are...

Well, there's Labskaus... although it can be found in large parts of Scandinavia as well.

It's basically slop, consisting of beef, potatoes, salty fish, onions and red beets; around here it's usually served with a side of red beets, pickles, fish and an egg on top.
Oh yes, and it tastes as great as it looks disgusting.

cat-burgers... I mean, they're normal hamburgers, but there's a rumor going on that they're made from cats... probably because of all the cats around that place...
I still love the taste of those burgers...

half-joking aside, we have plenty of mid-eastern food that's pretty unique anywhere else in the world (ever heard of falafel or pita? those our more common the pizza and burgers over here!)
