Ok I actually said that out loud (minus the "lol" of course) in my Anthropology class yesterday. The prof was saying something about how there's some theory that everyone has a life force that everyone can tap into, but not everyone can use effectively. She compared it to The Force from Star Wars, and when she asked if anyone knew what that was, I piped up "Midochlorians!"

Sooooo, what does that say about me?

It annoys me. Often I think it comes across like they're excusing themselves, like 'I like x, I'm such a geek/nerd/need to get a life/spend too much time y-ing'. Even if they're joking, I just dislike how people feel they have to excuse themselves or jokily self-depreciate for being interested in anything other than social interaction.

Yes, it's annoying. Someone that used to hang around my friends was like that. He said he was 'such a nerd' for turning down shagging a bird to play Minecraft. That is until I said, 'No, that doesn't make you a nerd. That makes you a loser.' Considering most of our friend group are nerds he got tossed out pretty quickly.

Doesn't bother me unless the activity is completely not nerdy. Like this: "I watched Big Bang Theory last night. It's so good! OMG I'm such a nerd!!!"

Fuck those people.

I suggest you fight back with Facebook status updates of your own:

"Just finished going through the entire 'Star Wars" Blu-Ray frame-by-frame to detail all of the changes Lucas has inflicted on us. LOL, I'm such a nerd! ^_^"

Do you say Catapult because you dislike the Trebuchet or because you, like many others, know that the ignorant won't realize the difference so why bother wasting a good thing on their kind? Whichever medieval throwing device we use though, I think we can all agree that the target should be a massive brick wall.

As for why they post on facebook...I don't know. Maybe they want to be a nerd but can't admit it out loud? There are far more annoying posts on facebook though, like the news posting non-news stories and family members photo-whoring.

Doesn't bother me when it's qualified by something really nerdy. Example: "I just asked a girl out because I rolled a nat 20 on my Charisma check lol I'm such a nerd" but that never happens. It's always "I love Naruto lol I'm such a nerd!" and that pisses me the Hell off.

This. It's mainly this. Most of us have felt the social ramifications of being 'nerds' and 'geeks'. It might have been anything from just being considered 'odd' or 'that kid' all the way up to actual physical bullying. By now though we've reclaimed it through our troubles and wear it as a badge of pride almost. But now some people who never went through what we went through (some even having caused the trouble) come in and claim that that are the same? Especially when they are clearly not? No! We will not stand for this!

It's the same thing that 'hardcore' gamers feel towards 'casuals'. Or hell, for most people who have liked something before it was so popular. Yes, I know this makes us sound like hipsters, but we aren't. We did like it before it was popular and we carried the burden associated with it. That's why you're so annoyed OP. It's the classic case of the 'old vetern' being upset at the 'green newbie' coming in and acting like they deserve the same title. Some of it's just bitterness, but some of it is reasonable I feel.

That right there irritates the shit out of me when I hear people say that, or see it as a status. It's not nerdy, stop it.

OT: I would love to know when being "nerdy" started being cool because in junior high and high school it was so not cool, and that pisses me off that it is now.

Just because you bought an ipad or the blue-ray edition of Star Wars doesn't make you a nerd.

It's annoying because they're all bloody hipsters - they put a tentative toe into the deep, shark-infested waters of geekdom and suddenly proclaim that they are now nerds purely because being a nerd is "anti-mainstream", I guess. It personally irritates me because, well, they're just not nerdy. Their stupid fake big glasses (which, by the way, I find offensive as someone who actually has to wear glasses most of the time to, you know, see things) and their stupid and incredibly shallow sense of association with geekiness due to the fact that they, I dunno, watched Star Wars or something are just not 'enough' for them to earn the hard-won title of nerd. Most 'true' nerds (and I know that this is into 'no true Scotsman' territory) have actually had to put up with shit for it, and are genuinely invested in the culture whereas this new generation of hipster-nerds simply do something nerdy in only a minor degree and proudly shout from the mountains that they are nerd, which earns them extra hipster cred.

It's also fucking irritating because people who pretend to be nerds will still give somebody a funny look if they're just a bit too nerdy. It's like spray-tanning yourself and trying to hang out with black gangsters, but instead of being shot and beaten up you just end up walking away confused after you've spent a few hours feeling totally out-of-the-loop in a discussion about why Gendo Ikari is a bad parent.

Not being being thrown out of one, just a catapult. It shows up in their homes and wont leave

It's cool to be a nerd now, nevermind the fact that most of the people that call themselves nerds couldnt put a PC together to save their lives and call themselves nerds because they have the latest gadgets and wear ironic hot topic t-shirts.

I have no idea why this pisses you off so much. Maybe because they imply that being a nerd is a bad thing? Today I laughed at a Higgs-Boson Particle joke, lol I'm such a cool guy.

WE are the hipsters

But seriously, I think its because they're being so fake about it, so it annoys you.
Yeah, the idea of that does infuriate me. For instance, I was instant messaging with this girl I know, and I mentioned gaming in general, and she was like "OMG, Im a massive gamer!" I said "oh, cool. What games do you play?" to which the reply was "um, just farmville, rly". I then proceeded to rant. As opposed to another lady friend, who actually does game a little, but has the sense to realize that even that doesn't categorize her as a "massive gamer". For instance, I've discussed Red Dead Redemption with her, and played a halo match with her and some of our mutual friends, and even though it was her first time she thrashed her fairly cocky (in terms of his skill) brother.

People I know usually use it in the sense of
"Actually, *some obscure fact about a cult media franchise*
... I'm such a nerd. *emoticon that suggests shame or embarrassment*"

My friends are too cool to use nerdism to pretend they're cool. >_>

Folks, nerdy isn't coming up to me playing Disgaea before school and saying "Lol that's my favorite game can I play?".
Nerdy is singing along to Snake Eater while you're doing the dishes after you get home from school.

Some people need to learn this distinction.

I believe I am in between these two age groups. One one hand, I've always been the odd kid (especially in Catholic school) when it came to loving videogames and anime and seeing no problem with nudity in general. On the other hand, at my age nobody acts like that anymore (although I hide my naked drawings so I won't get a referral or some shit like that, fucking teachers).

I generally like to hang around guys and similar girls so I don't have to be the oddball as much. I hate listening to other's problems, since I have enough of my own and I'm not good at comforting others, so I avoid most girls. I feel a little sorry for my 25-year-old-brother now, knowing he'd sit in the playground talking to his shoe to "communicate with Inspector Gadget."

I say it occasionally but that is only when I am rambling about the minutiae of whatever thing is currently stuck in my brain (Skyrim) and I look around to realize everyone is staring at me, but then I apologize for nerding out.

This is what I was saying not so long ago. The girls who used the shit out of me at school are taking up the "nerd chic" or should I say "dirty fucking slag who wears fake glasses, a wonder woman top and no pants" chic.
The only thing that annoys me is seeing 'lol im such a nerd, i love superman when he shots his web.'
Why pretend to be something you're not? Gah it irks me.
