This sounds like a lovely idea. I hope this happens soon. I'm tired of seeing it.
I agree. Make it so, D0WNT0WN.

For example: playing DnD = nerdy, being able to quote a couple of lines from Twilight = 'nerdy'.
I like watching you sleep. lol I'm such a nerd.

Hearing it doesn't bother me when it's actually nerdy. We all had those moments where we do something nerdy and laugh about it, and it's fun to share stories like that. However I do find the 'nerdy' annoying.

What makes you a "true nerd", how are you "truer" than anyone else who thinks they are a nerd?

This is really what annoys me, that some people think they have "mandate" on what is "nerd" and what is not, just because this is the internet.
I'm gonna go as far as to say that if you claim to be a "true" nerd and mean it with pride, you aren't one any more. "Nerd" used to be some derogatory, something mean. Something the big guys called the small guy who liked building model rockets or watch Star Trek. These small guys never saw themselves as "nerds", just normal guys with a hobby.

This exactly, with the addition of 'who cares anyway?' I mean, congratulations, having filled out an arbitrary check-list with no rational basis you get to apply an equally arbitrary name to yourself. It's not even a great name; hell it's still not fully reclaimed from its use as an insult. And yet people pour so much of themselves into them, just for a cardbord cutout of superiority that'll fall over if someone coughs.

Folks, nerdy isn't coming up to me playing Disgaea before school and saying "Lol that's my favorite game can I play?".
Nerdy is singing along to Snake Eater while you're doing the dishes after you get home from school.

Some people need to learn this distinction.
My way of celebrating the end of my exam was belting that out as loud as possible in an empty house. This feeling soon turned to revulsion when the only versions I could find on Itunes were Club(ish) re-mixes.

I think the disassembled Playmates TNG Phaser toy in my desk drawer, the dog-eared windows 95 manual and big bag of Polyhedral dice on my desk qualify me as a Nerd as it happens.

Nerds took back the word to make it empowering rather than derogatory, synonymous with Geek I feel.

And yes, I feel I do have a mandate on the word, and if you don't like it...tough.

i get mocked for being a nerd, but i still will say it if i do something that is actually nerdy, or at least considered nerdy. for instance, if i spend an entire weekend playing dragon age, world of warcraft, and magic over at my card shop, and then proceed to end the weekend reading arthas: wrath of the lich king and then going back over the lore of world of warcraft just to make sure i have it right, i think i've just qualified to be considered a nerd. and i'm glad to be a nerd. it's an intelligent crowd with people that are friendly, so why should i be ashamed of my brethren?

OT:
Yes that does get on my nerves too, most of the time they have nothing to do with nerds.
Even better, catapult both the offendee and the Krogan and have them fight it out while flying through the air.
And they can call themselves nerds hen they can field-strip a gaming computer and put it all back together.

"Nerds" didn't "take back" the word to make it empowering, it's just that what was classically considered "nerdy" is now considered "cult" and "nostalgia", and we aren't in Highschool anymore. By saying "this and this is Nerd, the rest is not", you are just as bad as the assholes in school going "this and this is cool, the rest is not".
Frankly, you're "some are true, some are not"-attitude is downright rude, and the fact that you think you got mandate to dictate just makes me wonder if you've ever truely felt like a nerd yourself.

We were nerds before being nerds were cool.
WE are the hipsters

But seriously, I think its because they're being so fake about it, so it annoys you.
Yeah, the idea of that does infuriate me. For instance, I was instant messaging with this girl I know, and I mentioned gaming in general, and she was like "OMG, Im a massive gamer!" I said "oh, cool. What games do you play?" to which the reply was "um, just farmville, rly". I then proceeded to rant. As opposed to another lady friend, who actually does game a little, but has the sense to realize that even that doesn't categorize her as a "massive gamer". For instance, I've discussed Red Dead Redemption with her, and played a halo match with her and some of our mutual friends, and even though it was her first time she thrashed her fairly cocky (in terms of his skill) brother.
I think the idea of being a nerd today, means that you aren't afraid of letting your true self shine. Everyone knows nerds used to get "dunked in the toilet" back in the day, but now they're "brave enough to be themselves". So non-nerds want some of that pride...? Kinda ironic if you ask me.
I'm not a psychologist but that seems likely. I'm a huge gamer but I hide this unless my video game knowledge is relevant to the discussion.

I always thought it was because people assume that a certain degree of nerdiness equals being special and smart, and everyone wants to be special and smart.

I solve this problem by not frequenting facebook. I did for a time, but after reading the status update feed I always seemed to think "... that was a waste of time", so I removed all my friends and quit. Some of the obnoxious ones were already blocked from the feed, but it was such a plethora of uslessness I gave up ¬¬.

So now I've gone back to only frequenting forums, irc and talking to the odd person on Skype.

Because "nerdy" is anything that is uncool. If all the cool kids started playing Dungeons and Dragons, it would never be called nerdy anymore. So when people say "lol I'm so nerdy", they're saying it like it's a bad thing, thus reinforcing this negative image of so-called "nerds".

I hate it too, OP

I think we should abandon the throwing siege weapons and go for.....CANNONS!
Cannons because, A. Further distance and higher velocity. Therefore for entertainment for us.
B. Explosive charges, everyone loves explosives charges.

I will say things like

Sometimes I hold up my hand when I get close to automatic-sliding doors in order to feel like a jedi.

But everyone already knows I'm a geek, I see no reason to make that statement or apologize for what I am. As the only people whom I care about think I'm awesome already.

See I realise I'm not a nerd. I am, however, a massive geek, and it's always funny to show people who think they're as geeky as me just how wrong they are.
They then usually resort to trying to make fun of the geekyness but unfortunately for them I don't give a microscopic fuck.

It's because nerd-isms have become so mainstream in our technologically advanced era. But I'll be honest with ya, kids who grew up in the 80s and 90s were really surrounded by nerdy things all the time. However some were just more social than others. Social kids were able to enjoy things not considered nerdy while the non-social kids just focused on their particular nerd-dom. Here's an example, I know a girl who really likes doing her make-up and having the cutest outfits (cute measure of hot, not puppy dog cute), but I can still talk to her about Power Rangers and Final Fantasy.

There are things that still belong to the nerds that hasn't broken the mainstream, i.e. Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons. Then again, I know people I talk Star Trek with who don't touch D&D or Magic...

Perhaps we can do what we ended up doing with gaming:
Hardcore Nerds people who eat sleep and breathe nerd culture.
and
Casual Nerds people who dabble into the nerd pool every now and then..

I have to tell you, something /changed/ about this in the mid 90's or early 2000's, and you seem to have missed it. Nerds (and geeks) really did claim the title as their own; this isn't some highschool thing, I remember reading articles in Knights of the Dinner Table (a combination comic book and gaming magazine, which was started back when "gaming" meant tabletop gaming) talking about the distinction between nerds, geeks, and dorks, and how the first two were no longer negative terms (and remember, the authors of these articles were most likely in their 30's at this point. This wasn't the scatterbrained musings of a teenager.)

Anyway, "geek" in modern parlance is someone who, irrespective of any intelligence or social awkwardness, has a deep interest in some subject or another, nearing the point of obsession, and a nearly complete knowledge of it. Those guys who obsess over their fantasy football league are every bit as "geeky" as the people who could re-write the script to the original Star Wars trilogy from memory. A "nerd" is someone who takes part in traditionally geeky or nerdy activities -- think gaming, watching sci fi, fantasy, and horror, reading comic books, stuff like that. If you have to ask whether it's nerdy or not, you're either not from the culture you're asking in relation to, or it's not nerdy. A "dork" is a socially awkward person. "Dork" does not imply intelligence, and in fact, in some ways implies a lack of it. Dorks are often seen in the company of nerds and geeks -- they may even be nerds or geeks themselves -- but unlike geek and nerd, it's not a positive term. Geeks and nerds tend to be accepting of dorks, since even the ones who aren't dorks anymore likely were at some point while growing up. Especially for those of us who grew up before "geek" became something cool; when I was a kid, we were still in the process of reclaiming the term, and the cool kids wouldn't be caught dead identifying by it.

OT: It only bugs me because it shows that there's still a certain stigma attached to the word. I mean, you don't hear athletic geeks going "oh, man, I'm such a jock, LOL" when they display their knowledge of sports; why do non-geeky people who have a slight interest in something geeky say "I'm such a geek, LOL" when they do something traditionally nerdy? It's because the stigma is still there, and they're trying to pass off their (usually mild) interest as some funny little quirk. It's become cool in a way, but only in a self aware "hey, look at me, I'm being weird, isn't that funny?" way. These people don't really care about nerd culture, and once the next fad comes, they'll start up with some other subculture.
